Age of Empires IV ranked play is a seasonal ladder: complete five placement battles to receive a rank, then climb by earning Rank Points. Elo is a separate, queue-specific rating that helps match you with opponents and determines Rank Point changes. Rank Points reset each season; Ranked 1v1 Elo persists between seasons.
How do you get a ranked placement?
Choose a ranked queue and play five placement battles at the start of a new season. After the fifth match, the game assigns your seasonal rank. The Ranked tab shows your Rank Points and how many you need to advance to the next division or tier. The Age of Empires Support FAQ, updated July 29, 2026, describes the requirement as a series of five placement battles: Age of Empires IV FAQ.

What do Rank Points and Elo do?
They are related but serve different purposes. Rank Points are the visible measure of your seasonal ladder progress; Elo is used for matchmaking and to calculate how many Rank Points you gain or lose after a match. Elo is tracked separately for each queue, so your ratings in Ranked 1v1, Quick Match 1v1, and Quick Match 2v2 are distinct.
| Rating | What it is for | Scope and reset |
|---|---|---|
| Rank Points | Show seasonal progress toward the next division or tier; wins add points and losses remove them. | Seasonal; reset at the start of each season. |
| Elo | Helps find opponents and calculate Rank Point gains or losses. | Separate for each queue. Ranked 1v1 Elo persists between seasons and helps set your starting rank after future placements. |
For the game’s explanation of ratings, see the official Age of Empires IV FAQ.

How does Team Ranked work?
Form a party with friends, select Team Ranked, and search for a match. Matchmaking compares the average player ratings of the two teams and seeks groups with similar averages. It will not start a match with uneven team sizes: if the lobby shows that some players are still missing, matchmaking is still filling the open spots. Team leaderboards are available in the same leaderboard area as Solo Ranked. Details are in Age of Empires Support’s ranked guidance.
When are ranked queues available?
Ranked queues are disabled when no season is running. The official FAQ says completed seasons can still be selected on the Ranked Seasons leaderboard, but their results stop updating after the season ends. The FAQ was updated July 29, 2026: Age of Empires IV FAQ.

How often do seasons change, and where can you check maps?
An official update published April 30, 2026 announced four three-month seasons per year: Spring (March–May), Summer (June–August), Fall (September–November), and Winter (December–February). Under the announced schedule, standard seasons begin on the first day of a month at 10 a.m. Pacific Time and end three months later on the last day of the month at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. See the April 30, 2026 season update for the announcement.
That update also listed separate map pools for 1v1 and Team Ranked, but those lists describe the rotation at that time, not necessarily the active October 2026 pools. Check the current in-game Ranked tab or the latest official update for the maps in your queue.
