Riot says Clash tiers draw on a player’s Solo/Duo and Flex ranked placement, as well as Clash history when available. For a team, every member’s rank is considered, but the highest-skill player carries more weight. Riot has not published the formula, weights, or tier cutoffs, so visible ranks alone cannot predict a team’s tier with certainty.
What goes into an individual Clash tier?
Riot’s Clash FAQ identifies a player’s Solo/Duo and Flex ranked placement as inputs. It also says the system uses Clash MMR from previous seasons when available. If a player has never played Clash or did not participate in the previous season, Riot says placement is based on ranked MMR instead.
Visible rank and MMR are not interchangeable disclosures: Riot does not publish how it converts a displayed rank into MMR, or how it combines Solo/Duo and Flex information. Nor does the FAQ give numerical boundaries for each tier.
How does Riot calculate a team’s tier?
Riot says the ranks of all five team members are considered, but the strongest member weighs more heavily. The tier therefore is not described as a simple, equal average of five ranks. A team with one much higher-ranked player may be placed differently from a team whose visible ranks look more evenly matched.

Riot does not disclose the strongest player’s exact weight, a formula for combining players, or the way prior Clash performance changes the result. Specific formulas or rank-to-tier predictions that claim certainty go beyond what Riot has published.
What do Clash tiers mean?
Clash has four tiers: IV is the lowest and I is the highest. Riot says tiers are rounded down, which results in more players in tier IV; it does not publish tier cutoffs or the distribution. The tier affects the opponent pool and the tournament check-in window: teams in different tiers do not face one another during the same tournament weekend, and check-in times are staggered, with lower tiers able to lock in earlier and tier I later. Riot notes a regional exception for SEA. Check the live client for the current event’s schedule.

Is tier the same as Clash Victory Points?
No. Tier is used for tournament placement and matchmaking. Victory Points and season-end reward milestones are a separate progression. Riot’s 2020 season-end post described rewards based on Victory Points earned over the season; it does not explain how a player’s current Clash tier is calculated: Clash rewards in 2020.
