Steam Support says that bar currently displays system status and cannot be directly used by games or other apps with RGB functionality. To sync lights with Steam Machine games or media, you need an external signal path—such as a compatible HDMI sync box—and lights that work with that system.
How audio-reactive backlighting works
A lighting system samples audio, then maps changes in the signal—such as beats or shifts in intensity—to changes in a light’s brightness, color, or timing. Philips Hue describes real-time audio analysis and beat detection as part of music-reactive lighting. The exact effects depend on the product and its settings.
With an HDMI sync box, the box reads audio or video carried by the HDMI source and sends synchronization information to a lighting controller. In Hue’s system, the box sends that information to a Hue Bridge, which controls compatible color-capable lights. This allows the lights to react to the Steam Machine’s media without requiring access to its built-in status LEDs. Philips Hue’s HDMI sync box product page describes this signal path.
What the Steam Machine’s built-in light bar can do
Steam Support’s Steam Machine – Feature & Troubleshooting guide says: “The light bar is currently only set up to display system status and cannot be directly utilized by games or other apps with RGB functionality.” So the built-in bar should not be treated as an audio-reactive backlight or a lighting interface for games.

For ambient lighting around the display, plan on a separate setup that can access the game or media signal and control compatible lights.
What an HDMI lighting setup needs
- A signal source: The Steam Machine supplies the game or media audio and video.
- A way to analyze the signal: An HDMI sync box can read audio or video carried by the HDMI connection. Other systems may analyze audio in software or use screen capture.
- Compatible lights and controller: For the documented Hue HDMI setup, color-capable Hue lights are controlled through a Hue Bridge.
- A compatible display chain: Check the sync box against the Steam Machine, display, any receiver, and the output mode you want to use.
Philips Hue lists HDMI 2.0 support for its 4K HDMI sync box and formats up to 4K at 60 Hz and 1440p at 120 Hz. Those format limits do not by themselves establish that every combination of HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR), audio return, or other features will work unchanged. Consult the Hue Sync Box compatibility overview for the model-specific feature matrix before choosing a signal path.

What to check on the Steam Machine’s HDMI path
Steam Support lists HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 for the Steam Machine, and says Gaming Mode currently supports one display at a time. For an HDMI sync box, the relevant question is whether the complete connection preserves the mode you want—not just whether each device has an HDMI port.
- Check supported resolution and refresh rate across the Steam Machine, sync box, display, and receiver, if used.
- Verify HDR and VRR support for the exact combination of devices and settings.
- Check audio return behavior, including ARC/eARC if it is part of your setup; Hue’s compatibility information notes limitations in some audio-analysis cases.
- Confirm the box has the HDMI inputs you need and that its lighting ecosystem supports your chosen lights.
The Steam Machine’s DisplayPort output is not an HDMI input for an HDMI sync box. If you intend to use that output, verify that your chosen lighting approach can access the resulting signal rather than assuming an HDMI box will handle it.

Philips Hue’s overview of syncing lights with music, published September 8, 2026, distinguishes HDMI sync boxes, TV apps, screen synchronization, and desktop software. The Hue Sync desktop app described there is for Windows and Mac; that does not establish it as a SteamOS solution. Among the approaches covered here, HDMI synchronization has the clearest directly documented fit for an external Steam Machine signal, provided the exact equipment and output mode are compatible.

Response time, supported audio formats, and behavior vary with the product and signal path. The cited product information does not establish a universal latency figure or guarantee analysis for every audio output mode, so do not assume a particular response speed or that every connection will expose audio to the sync box. Check the specifications for the specific box and configuration you plan to use.
