Baldur’s Gate 3 is built around player agency that extends beyond dialogue: choices, character relationships, exploration, and turn-based combat are designed to interact. Larian Studios describes the game as a cinematic, player-driven role-playing game set in Dungeons & Dragons’ Forgotten Realms; that is the developer’s framing, not an independent measurement of how much freedom players experience.
How does Baldur’s Gate 3 handle choices?
Choice in Baldur’s Gate 3 is presented as a way to shape the story and leave consequences in the world. Larian’s official feature page connects decisions not only to the plot, but also to relationships, enemies, exploration, and the fate of the Forgotten Realms. The design implication is that a decision can matter through more than a dialogue branch: it can affect who travels with you, how characters respond, and what opportunities or conflicts you encounter.
That promise should not be mistaken for a claim that every choice has the same scale or permanence. Larian describes a reactive design, but its feature page does not quantify how many decisions produce major consequences or establish that each choice changes the wider story.
Origin characters are protagonists and companions
Larian identifies seven Origin heroes. Players can embody one of them or recruit them into a party, and their personal stories intersect with the larger plot and can reach different outcomes. This gives character identity two roles: it can shape the perspective from which a player experiences the story, or supply a companion whose history becomes part of that player’s campaign.

How does the game let players solve problems?
The world offers physical actions as well as conversation and attacks. Larian names sneaking, climbing, jumping, shoving, and dipping among the available verbs, and describes verticality as part of exploration. These affordances make the environment part of the decision-making: players can consider position, movement, and objects or surroundings rather than treating every obstacle as a dialogue prompt or a direct fight.
Environmental interaction also carries into combat, connecting exploration and encounters through shared spatial possibilities. The official feature page names these options but does not count how many encounters support each approach, so their presence should not be read as a guarantee that every obstacle has an alternate solution.
What makes Baldur’s Gate 3’s combat different?
Combat is turn-based and derived from Dungeons & Dragons fifth-edition rules. Larian describes it as an evolved adaptation, naming team-based initiative, advantage and disadvantage, roll modifiers, AI, environmental interactions, and difficulty options. Together, those systems frame a fight as a sequence of party decisions involving both character abilities and the surrounding space.

The official materials establish the declared 5e basis and identify selected mechanics; they do not provide a complete, feature-by-feature comparison with tabletop rules. It is more accurate, then, to call the combat 5e-derived than to assume that every tabletop rule appears unchanged in the game.

How do party play and multiplayer change the design?
The game supports online multiplayer for up to four players, according to Larian’s feature page. Players can coordinate in combat or split up to pursue quests and personal agendas. That creates a deliberate contrast between party cohesion and divergence: cooperation can focus attention on the same problem, while splitting up lets participants pursue different leads. The feature description presents these as options, not as evidence of how commonly players choose either style.

What is the scale of its character and action systems?
Larian’s official game page lists the following figures. The page is undated; these are publisher-stated counts on the version accessed in 2026, not independently audited totals.
| Category | Figure stated by Larian |
|---|---|
| Races | 11 |
| Subraces | 31 |
| Classes | 12 |
| Subclasses | 46 |
| Spells and actions | Over 600 |
| Cinematics | Over 174 hours |
These numbers communicate breadth, but they do not by themselves show how often a player will encounter a particular option or how much any one choice changes a playthrough. They are useful as a snapshot of the range Larian advertises, not as a measure of narrative branching or player behavior.
How did the design evolve during development?
Larian’s support FAQ says a small team began work on story and game design in late 2016 and that the studio received the official go-ahead from Wizards of the Coast in January 2017. The FAQ identifies the Divinity 4.0 engine. These are development details reported by the studio.

In a development update, Larian described refining how fifth-edition rules were integrated, changing the initiative system, and adjusting Origin characters, narration, visual presentation, and the user interface. The studio also said it gathered reactions through press presentations, live events, and community feedback. This documents iteration across several parts of the game, but it does not establish that any one change was caused by a specific source of feedback.
The Game Developers Conference catalog lists Larian Studios’ Swen Vincke as the speaker for a 2024 design session titled “The Secrets of ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’.” Its catalog overview says the session covers development and market challenges. The listing identifies a potential source for more detail; without the session’s recording or transcript, it does not substantiate particular quotes or lessons.
What ties the game’s systems together?
The design’s through-line is the overlap among narrative decisions, party relationships, physical exploration, and tactical encounters. The same world that presents story choices also supplies spaces to move through and environments to use in combat; Origin characters link personal stories to party composition; and multiplayer permits players to either coordinate or diverge. Larian’s feature descriptions support this picture of connected systems, while leaving the scale of individual consequences and the frequency of particular approaches unspecified.
