A Minecraft map covers 128 × 128 blocks at its default zoom and up to 2,048 × 2,048 blocks at maximum zoom. Its image stays 128 × 128 pixels at every zoom level; zooming out makes each pixel represent more terrain.
How many blocks does a Minecraft map cover?
Map coverage depends on its zoom level, written here from 0/4 through 4/4. Each zoom step doubles the width and height represented, while the map image remains the same size. As a result, every step covers four times as much ground and shows less detail per pixel.

At 4/4, each pixel represents one full 16 × 16-block chunk. These figures describe the area represented by one map item, not the total size or boundary of a Minecraft world. Minecraft Wiki’s map reference documents the map dimensions and coverage.
Why does the map stay 128 × 128 pixels?
The image resolution and the ground area it depicts are different things. A map does not gain pixels when you zoom it out: it still displays a 128 × 128-pixel square. Instead, each pixel stands for a larger square of terrain, so the map covers more ground but conveys less fine-grained detail.

How to zoom a map out
Use a cartography table to expand the coverage of an explored map. The official Minecraft article describes placing the explored map in the first slot and paper in the second to create a zoomed-out version. Minecraft’s cartography table guide explains the process.
Map scale and player pointers by edition
Zoom level determines coverage; edition-specific pointer behavior does not change the dimensions above. In Java Edition, maps automatically show the player with a pointer. In Bedrock Edition, that feature uses a locator map, which can be made by adding a compass at a cartography table, according to the official cartography table guide.

Do larger maps automatically cover the area around a smaller map?
No. Maps align to a grid, and maps at the same zoom level have grid-defined boundaries rather than partially overlapping. To map a new area at a larger scale, start with a base map in that area and zoom it out; a zoomed-out map is not simply a nine-map collage centered on the original. Minecraft Wiki’s map reference describes map alignment.
