Bitcoin realized profit estimates the value gained on coins that moved on-chain: a metric assigns each spent output a USD value at its prior on-chain movement and again when it is spent, then sums the positive differences. It does not prove that coins were sold, reveal an individual’s actual proceeds, or predict Bitcoin’s next move.
How is Bitcoin realized profit calculated?
For a price-stamped spent output, the conceptual calculation is:

Realized profit = (BTC amount × USD price at spend) − (BTC amount × USD price at prior on-chain movement)

A lower spend-time value is a realized loss. Net realized profit/loss combines profits and losses over a selected period and population.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
These are on-chain estimates, not a record of a verified exchange trade. Providers may differ in price sources, timing, output treatment, adjustments, and included populations, so the formula explains the basic approach rather than every implementation detail. Glassnode describes realized value as the profit or loss associated with spending, comparing coin value at acquisition with value at disposal; in blockchain metrics, those prices are inferred from movement timestamps and price data. See Glassnode’s realized-capitalization guide and realized profit and loss documentation.
What is the difference between realized profit and SOPR?
Realized profit is a value total, often expressed in USD. SOPR—the Spent Output Profit Ratio—is a ratio comparing the value of a spent output with its value at creation. Glassnode defines it this way: “It is calculated by dividing the realised value of a spent output (in USD) by the value at creation (in USD).” — Renato Shirakashi, Glassnode, 2019. The definition is in Glassnode’s SOPR guide.

- SOPR above 1: spent outputs were valued higher at spend than at creation on average under the metric.
- SOPR below 1: spent outputs were valued lower at spend than at creation on average.
- SOPR at 1: the ratio’s break-even reference.
SOPR is not the aggregate dollar amount of profit. A ratio and a value total answer different questions, so they should not be described interchangeably.

Does realized profit mean Bitcoin was sold?
No. The metric observes on-chain output movements and assigns values using price data. It does not establish that a coin was sold on an exchange, identify who beneficially owns it, show a person’s cash proceeds, or reveal why the transfer occurred. For example, someone can move coins between addresses they control; that on-chain movement may reset the reference without demonstrating an economic sale.

What realized profit does—and does not—measure
It measures price-stamped activity in coins that moved
Realized profit concerns spent coins, while unrealized profit refers to value associated with coins still held relative to their on-chain reference. Both depend on the metric’s method for assigning values, but only the former is based on outputs that have moved during the relevant period.
It is not a personal tax or accounting calculation
An on-chain chart does not determine an individual’s taxable gain or accounting result. Those depend on jurisdiction and personal circumstances; this metric is not a substitute for tax guidance.

It does not prove intent or forecast price
A realized-profit figure alone cannot establish investor sentiment, explain why holders moved coins, or show that a market top or bottom is forming. Glassnode presents on-chain measures as analytical lenses on investor behavior and capital flows, not direct observations of intent or proof of a prediction. See Glassnode’s discussion of on-chain interpretation.
Why can two Bitcoin realized-profit charts differ?
Before comparing figures, check that the charts measure the same thing and cover the same activity. A chart’s value can change with its aggregation window and included population, and providers may apply different adjustments.

For example, Glassnode documents a long-term/short-term holder classification using an age-centered logistic function around 155 days, with a 10-day transition width. This is a provider methodology, not a universal cohort boundary; see Glassnode’s LTH/STH methodology. The cited definitions do not establish that every vendor uses the same entity heuristics, exclusions, exchange attribution, or price sources. Treat series as comparable only after checking each provider’s definition. A documented chart source is available through Glassnode Studio; verify its metric, interval, and cohort filters before interpreting a displayed figure.
