Bitcoin vs. Stablecoins: Which Holds Value Better in Volatile Markets?

Bitcoin has market-price risk; stablecoins have peg, reserve, issuer and access risks. Which is a better fit depends on your spending currency, time horizon and liquidity needs.

Neither Bitcoin nor stablecoins are a guaranteed way to preserve value during volatile markets. Bitcoin has no fiat peg, so its market price can rise or fall sharply against the currency you spend. A stablecoin is designed to track a reference asset—often the U.S. dollar—but its price can slip from that target, and its reliability depends on its reserves, issuer, redemption terms, liquidity and design.

The better fit depends on what “holding value” means for you: which currency you will spend, how long you need to hold the money, how much fluctuation you can accept, and whether you need prompt access or redemption.

Is Bitcoin or a stablecoin safer to hold when the market is volatile?

They expose you to different risks, so neither is universally safer. Bitcoin’s central risk is market-price volatility relative to your spending currency. Stablecoins aim to reduce that particular fluctuation by tracking a reference asset, but introduce peg, reserve, issuer, redemption, liquidity and technical risks.

Question Bitcoin Stablecoin
What is it designed to track? No fiat peg; price is set by market trading. A reference asset, commonly a fiat currency, but the mechanism varies by token.
Main value risk Its price may move substantially against your spending currency. The token may deviate from its reference price; reserves, issuer, redemption access, market liquidity and technical arrangements also matter.
What to assess Holding period, price volatility, trading liquidity, custody and your capacity for losses. Token design, reserve quality and liquidity, disclosures, redemption eligibility and terms, market depth, network and jurisdiction.

Can stablecoins lose their peg?

Yes. “Stablecoin” describes an aim, not a guaranteed price or automatic right to immediate redemption. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Corporation Finance describes stablecoins broadly as crypto assets designed to maintain value against a reference asset, such as a fiat currency, commodity or basket. Its April 4, 2025 statement, however, addresses only a specific subset of USD-pegged tokens designed for one-for-one stability and redemption and backed by low-risk, readily liquid reserves; it should not be read as covering every token or every jurisdiction. Even fiat-backed stablecoins can trade above or below their target in secondary markets. That trading price is distinct from whether a particular holder is eligible to redeem directly with the issuer, and whether redemption is practical when needed. Why a peg may come under pressure

  • Reserve quality and liquidity: Confidence depends partly on what backs the token and how readily those assets can be converted when holders seek redemption.
  • Redemption terms and access: Direct redemption may be limited by eligibility, minimums, procedures or other terms. A token trading near its target does not by itself establish that every holder can redeem at that price.
  • Token mechanism: Fiat-reserve-backed, crypto-collateralized and algorithmic designs do not have the same safeguards or failure modes.
  • Market and technical conditions: Secondary-market depth, the trading venue and the token’s network can affect whether you can move or sell it when you want.

It finds that highly volatile collateral can make par convertibility vulnerable to large negative shocks, even when initial reserves are high. Is Bitcoin a safe haven?

The cited evidence does not establish that Bitcoin reliably preserves value during market stress. Its price is driven by market demand rather than a claim to a fixed amount of fiat currency, and the CFTC warns that virtual-currency prices are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies.

Nor should stablecoins be assumed to provide a safe haven in every kind of shock. A 2024 BIS working paper found that stablecoins did not act as a safe haven from crypto-market or U.S. monetary-policy shocks in its analysis. That result is bounded by the paper’s sample, method and period; it is not a prediction for every token or future event. BIS Working Paper 1219: Stablecoins, money market funds and monetary policy

In practical terms, a dollar-pegged token may reduce exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements against the U.S. dollar while still carrying peg and access risks. It also does not guarantee purchasing power over a longer period: tracking a currency is not the same as preserving what that currency can buy.

How should you decide which risk you can accept?

  1. Start with your spending currency. If your upcoming expenses are in a currency other than the stablecoin’s reference asset, the token’s peg alone does not remove exchange-rate exposure.
  2. Set your time horizon. A short-term need for accessible funds differs from a long-term goal; neither a short-term peg nor Bitcoin’s market price guarantees future purchasing power.
  3. Decide how much fluctuation is tolerable. Bitcoin can move substantially in price. A stablecoin targets a reference price but can deviate from it.
  4. Check access, not just the quoted price. For a stablecoin, read the issuer’s redemption eligibility and terms and consider whether you can use the relevant trading venue or network. For Bitcoin, consider the liquidity of the venue where you expect to sell or spend it.
  5. Assess the specific token and custody arrangement. Review its design, reserve information and network requirements rather than assuming all stablecoins behave alike.

How do I hold crypto safely?

Custody and price stability are separate questions. A compatible hardware wallet can help you manage private keys for supported assets, but it cannot stabilize Bitcoin’s price, ensure that a stablecoin remains at its peg or guarantee redemption by an issuer. Confirm current support for the exact asset and network in the provider’s documentation; some tokens may require a compatible third-party wallet. Ledger: Supported Coins & Tokens
