How Borderlands Bridges Film and Games: Randy Pitchford and Jamie Lee Curtis

Borderlands’ move from game to film is another experiment in the franchise’s in-between: shared worlds and characters, but a different, linear story.

Borderlands bridges film and games by embracing the messy in-between: its games mix genres that seem mismatched, and its film explores what happens when an interactive world becomes a linear story. Gearbox president Randy Pitchford says the movie shares the franchise’s universe and characters without simply retelling the games. Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Dr. Tannis, offers another link to the game community through her own history with gaming and fandom.

Borderlands was built around unlikely combinations

Pitchford describes the Borderlands identity as a meeting point for things that do not ordinarily fit together. The games began by combining role-playing and shooter elements: “We jammed an RPG and a shooter together, which had no business being together. We created a genre.” He also points to the franchise’s mix of western and science-fiction imagery, surrealism and realism, and comedy and drama. In his words, “To me, though, it was always about–it’s a Reese’s peanut butter cup.”

The “borderland” is not simply a midpoint where differences disappear. It is the untidy space where contrasting ideas meet and shape something new. Pitchford extends that idea to characters caught between who they hope to be and who they are. In a GamesBeat interview published August 2, 2024, and updated June 18, 2025, he describes the franchise’s creative identity through these kinds of intersections.

Why a film creates a new border

A game and a movie tell stories differently. Players make choices and act within a game’s world; a feature film guides viewers through a fixed sequence. For Pitchford, adapting Borderlands offered a way to explore that divide rather than pretend it did not exist. He called it “the borderland between interactive and linear” storytelling, contrasting a big studio movie with the interactive play space to which he has dedicated his life.

That distinction helps explain why a movie based on a game need not reproduce the experience of playing it. The film can draw on Borderlands’ characters, setting, themes, and some plot points while using the tools of cinema: performance, editing, and a story shaped for a single viewing rather than player-directed action.

Does the Borderlands movie retell the games?

Pitchford describes the movie as a separate cinematic universe, not a retelling of the games’ exact storylines. His reasoning is that players who have already experienced the games have already had those stories; the film should offer something different. “If you’ve consumed the video games you already have that story, that experience, and so we want you to get something out of this movie, something that you couldn’t possibly get in a video game.”

Director Eli Roth expressed a similar goal in terms of adaptation rather than duplication: “As I told Ari and Randy Pitchford and everyone at the beginning, my job is to make an adaptation of the game—not a recreation of the game,” he said. Roth also said the film needed to deepen characters and adjust elements that work in a game but would not sustain a feature-length movie of roughly 90 minutes. Pitchford encouraged the team to make a movie rather than recreate the game.

What carries across What changes in the film

These accounts establish that the film uses the franchise’s world while telling a different story. They do not, by themselves, settle every question about how the movie fits into a formal game-canon timeline.

Jamie Lee Curtis connects the cast to game culture

Curtis plays Dr. Tannis. She has described herself as a “gamer mom” and spoken about attending Evo and anime conventions, raising a gamer, and hosting a cosplay wedding dressed as Jaina Proudmoore from World of Warcraft. These are details from her own account of her relationship to games and fandom, not proof of why she was cast or how she approached the role. The GamesBeat interview gives her perspective alongside Pitchford’s explanation of the franchise.

How closely was the film connected to Gearbox?

Pitchford says he worked on site as a franchise consultant, advising on lore, visual design, vehicles, and sets. Gearbox also supported production by sharing game assets. An Epic Games Store feature on the adaptation reports that some game assets were used to create 3D-printed weapons for the film and that Gearbox developers contributed rendered pixels.

That production involvement helps explain how the film could draw on the games’ visual world. It does not mean the movie reproduces their plots or provides the same interactive experience.
