A browser game port adapts a game’s code and platform needs to work with browser APIs. Often, developers compile the game’s C or C++ code to WebAssembly, then use JavaScript and browser services for graphics, controls, sound, files, and saved data. An emulator takes a different approach: it recreates enough of the original platform for the game to run. These approaches can overlap, but they solve different problems.

What happens when a game runs in a browser?

A browser port is not simply a native game executable placed inside a web page. The game needs a route to the browser’s graphics, input, audio, storage, and networking services, and its code and assets must be delivered in a form the browser can use.

One common route is to compile game code written in C or C++ into WebAssembly (Wasm). A toolchain such as Emscripten can also create JavaScript glue code and an HTML shell. The browser loads the page and Wasm module; JavaScript helps start the module and connect it to browser functionality. The game then draws into a browser canvas and receives input and other services through the interfaces available to it.

Another route is to run an emulator in the browser. Instead of adapting the game’s own code directly, the emulator models the older machine or software platform the game expected. The game runs within that modeled environment. The key distinction is what is being adapted: the game and its dependencies, or the platform the game was built for.

What WebAssembly does—and what it does not do

WebAssembly is a low-level binary instruction format that browsers can execute. Developers commonly compile code written in a higher-level language to Wasm; MDN Web Docs describes C and C++ toolchains built around Clang/LLVM and Emscripten, and also identifies Rust as a Wasm target. Wasm is designed to complement JavaScript, not replace it.

Wasm can execute compiled game logic, but it is not a complete operating system or a set of browser APIs. It does not directly manipulate the page’s document object model (DOM), and the Wasm format itself does not define system calls or browser services. The host environment provides functionality through imports. In a browser, JavaScript and web APIs form the connection between compiled code and that host functionality.

This boundary matters when evaluating whether a game can be ported. A program written in a language that compiles to Wasm still depends on its libraries, operating-system calls, graphics features, timing, and file access. Those dependencies need browser-compatible implementations. WebAssembly.org’s portability guidance emphasizes that hosts may provide different APIs; unsupported behavior may need to be emulated, which can add work and affect performance.

How Emscripten connects existing game code to the browser

For C and C++ projects, Emscripten uses Clang/LLVM to compile code to Wasm and can produce JavaScript glue and an HTML document. Its support layers can map commonly used native interfaces to browser facilities. MDN names SDL, OpenGL, OpenAL, and parts of POSIX among the libraries Emscripten implements through browser-facing glue. That is useful compatibility support, not a guarantee that every program using those interfaces will work unchanged.

For example, Emscripten’s SDL support covers keyboard, mouse, joystick, audio, and graphics. A game using supported SDL features may have a more direct path to the browser than one built around unsupported platform-specific calls. Even with a compatibility layer, developers may need to adjust code or replace dependencies when the original program assumes unrestricted access to a desktop operating system or hardware.

Files and saved data need browser-specific handling

A native game can usually read files available to its operating system. A web page cannot freely browse a visitor’s computer in the same way. Emscripten can package files for the game in a virtual file system. The default in-memory file system loses changes when the page reloads; Emscripten’s IDBFS option can persist data using browser storage. A developer must choose an approach that fits what the game needs to read and save.

Persistent browser storage is distinct from access to the visitor’s general files. A port that needs local configuration, game assets, or save files must arrange those through browser-appropriate mechanisms rather than assume native file-system access.

WebGL draws the game’s graphics

WebGL, not WebAssembly, is the browser graphics API. It provides hardware-accelerated 2D and 3D graphics in a browser canvas; MDN describes it as a web implementation of OpenGL ES 2.0 in its game-development material. The game’s rendering code reaches the canvas and graphics functions through the JavaScript and browser API boundary.

How much adaptation is needed depends on the game’s original renderer and the features it uses. Some rendering paths may map through a toolchain or compatibility layer; others can require renderer changes, shader work, or asset conversion. Native graphics calls should not be assumed to work automatically just because a game’s code compiles to Wasm.

Graphics compatibility also varies by device. Emscripten’s deployment guidance notes that compressed texture formats are not uniformly supported across visitor hardware. A port may need multiple texture variants and can choose among them based on capabilities reported by the WebGL context. That means a graphics asset strategy is part of browser compatibility, not just a packaging detail.

Input, sound, networking, and other browser services

A game needs more than code execution and a renderer. Browser APIs provide the services that a native game might otherwise get from its operating system or libraries. MDN’s web-game overview maps sound to Web Audio, graphics to WebGL, persistent local data to IndexedDB, and networking to options such as WebRTC or WebSockets. Touch and gamepad controls use browser input APIs; full-screen and pointer-lock APIs can support immersive controls where appropriate.

Controls are chosen for the game and the device. A port may use a keyboard and mouse, touch controls, or a physical controller if it implements Gamepad API support. A controller is optional: neither WebAssembly nor WebGL requires one, and the browser cannot make a game accept controller input if the port has not implemented it.

The same principle applies to audio and networking. A port needs a browser-compatible route to each service it uses. The presence of a Wasm module does not itself supply sound, online play, or persistent saves; those features depend on the game’s integration with browser APIs and the implementation behind them.

Direct port or emulator: what is the difference?

Both approaches can involve WebAssembly. An emulator can itself be compiled to Wasm and use JavaScript or browser APIs for its host integration. The distinction is conceptual: a direct port adapts the game’s code and dependencies to the browser, while an emulator models the system the game expects.

Question Direct port Emulation
What is adapted? The game’s code and its dependencies are compiled or changed for the browser environment. A model of the original hardware or software platform is implemented so the game’s software can run within it.
What must be compatible? The source code, libraries, graphics path, and other dependencies must work with the web-targeting toolchain and browser services. The emulator must support enough of the original platform’s behavior for the particular game to run correctly.
Where does browser integration happen? The port connects graphics, controls, audio, files, persistence, and networking to browser APIs, sometimes through toolchain support layers. The emulator still needs browser-facing integration for its display, input, audio, storage, and other host needs.
What examples illustrate the approach? A game’s own C or C++ code compiled with Emscripten is a common example of a direct port. WebAssembly.org names DOSBox, QEMU, and MAME as examples of platform simulation or emulation use cases.

Neither route is a universal winner. A direct port depends on whether the game’s code and dependencies can be adapted. Emulation depends on whether the emulator can reproduce the platform behavior the game needs. The choice also affects how browser services are integrated, how much content must load, and where compatibility work is required.

Why startup time and asset loading matter

Before play, the browser has to retrieve the page, executable code, and game assets—either all at once or in stages. If a port preloads a large package before starting the game, that download can delay the first playable moment. Emscripten’s deployment guidance recommends minimizing preloaded assets and splitting content into packages that can load asynchronously where practical.

  • Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
  • Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.
  • Rumble vibration.
  • Support turbo function.

Loading everything upfront may make assets immediately available after startup, but it makes the initial wait longer. Staged loading can make the game playable sooner, while requiring the implementation to manage content that arrives later. The right balance depends on the game’s asset structure and which content is needed first.

Texture variants add another delivery consideration. Since compressed texture formats differ in availability across desktop and mobile hardware, a port may need to select a supported version at runtime. Download size, texture support, and the device’s graphics capabilities all influence how smoothly a particular port starts and runs.

What determines browser-game performance and compatibility?

WebAssembly is designed for efficient execution, but that alone does not establish how fast a particular game will run. Results depend on the browser and device, the graphics path, the implementation, asset loading, and the APIs the game uses. Unsupported host behavior may require emulation, which can reduce performance. There is no universal speedup figure or guarantee that a browser port will perform like its native counterpart.

Compatibility is similarly specific. A game can compile successfully and still need work because a library call, graphics feature, timing assumption, or storage behavior does not fit the browser environment. WebAssembly.org’s portability guidance underscores that available imports come from the host; a Wasm module cannot assume every browser supplies identical APIs or performance.

  • Code and libraries: Check whether the game’s language, dependencies, and runtime calls are supported by the chosen toolchain or need replacements.
  • Rendering: Identify which graphics features the original game uses and whether its renderer, shaders, and textures can be adapted to the available WebGL path.
  • Input and audio: Map the game’s controls and sound system to browser APIs, and implement optional gamepad support if desired.
  • Files and saves: Decide how packaged files are exposed to the game and how persistent data is stored across reloads.
  • Loading: Review what must be available before play and whether larger asset groups can load asynchronously.
  • Target devices: Test on the browsers and hardware the game is meant to support, particularly where graphics formats and performance can vary.

What the technical sources establish

The explanations above reflect documentation from MDN Web Docs, Emscripten, and WebAssembly.org. MDN’s WebAssembly concepts page showed a last-modified date of October 7, 2026. The Emscripten runtime and deployment documentation surfaced as versioned project pages labeled 6.0.13-git and 6.0.11-git, respectively. These pages describe toolchain behavior and concepts; they do not, by themselves, provide a current browser-by-browser support matrix. For a specific game or target device, compatibility has to be assessed against the APIs and hardware involved.
