What the VRS ranks—and why event choice matters
Valve describes VRS as its official system for ranking roster performance. It is published monthly and serves as the basis for direct VRS invitations. The ranked unit is a roster: five specific athletes, regardless of whether they are associated with a team organization. That distinction matters because a team name or club is not, by itself, the object being ranked.

The key distinction for tournament planning is whether an event is ranked. Under Valve’s definitions, a ranked tournament produces outcomes that generate data used to determine relative roster performance. An unranked tournament does not produce that data. A strong result at an unranked event may have competitive or developmental value, but it should not be treated as a result that moves the official VRS.

How a team can improve its position
1. Confirm that the tournament counts
Before committing travel, practice time, or player availability, check whether the event is designated as ranked and whether it follows Valve’s Tournament Operating Requirements. Confirm this with the event organizer’s current information and the applicable Valve requirements. If the tournament is unranked, its outcome will not feed into VRS under Valve’s definition.
This is the first decision because it separates two different objectives: competing for a VRS-relevant result and competing for experience, exposure, or another event-specific goal. Both may be worthwhile, but they are not interchangeable. Do not put an event on a VRS improvement plan until its ranked status is clear.
2. Seek stronger results in ranked competition
Results in ranked tournaments are the evidenced input to VRS. A better finish is therefore a sensible competitive objective, but the public rules reviewed here do not provide a complete formula connecting a placement to a precise points change. They do not support promises such as “this finish is worth a set number of points” or “one win will move the roster above a named rival.”
Use results as a direction for planning, not as a guaranteed arithmetic outcome. Teams can compare the ranked events available to them, select competitions appropriate to their level and calendar, and then judge performance by what they actually achieve. The rules support the importance of ranked-event outcomes; they do not establish a universally optimal event schedule or a minimum number of events needed to rise.

3. Preserve roster continuity when practical
Because VRS ranks five specific athletes, a lineup change can affect which roster identity is involved. Continuity also matters for direct invitations: at least three athletes who participate must have been on the invited roster on the invite date, and those athletes must play in each event match. This is a participation condition, not a promise of an invitation or a ranking increase.
When considering a substitution, teams should assess both the competitive reason for the change and its implications for the roster and event eligibility. A change may be necessary, but assuming the organization’s identity alone carries over is not a safe planning approach. Check the event’s current invitation criteria against the actual five-player roster and intended match participation.
4. Plan around the invitation-date snapshot
Ranked-event organizers must use the most recent VRS as of the invite date. Since Valve publishes VRS monthly, the relevant list is the one applicable when invitations are determined—not necessarily the latest ranking visible on a third-party site when a team checks later.
For each target event, record the expected invite date, identify the applicable VRS release, and verify the organizer’s stated invitation process. A roster’s position can be relevant to an invitation only in relation to that snapshot and the event’s criteria. Do not assume that a live-looking ranking or a later monthly update retroactively changes which standings an organizer was required to use.

How to evaluate a VRS event opportunity
When comparing tournaments, use the following checks before committing the roster. The first four concern Valve’s rules or event eligibility; travel, schedule, and competitive level are practical planning considerations rather than VRS scoring factors.
- Ranked status: Is the event officially ranked under the applicable Valve requirements?
- Invite snapshot: Which VRS list and invite date determine invitations?
- Entry route: Does the structure include an open qualifier, direct invitations, or both?
- Roster eligibility: Can the intended lineup meet the continuity conditions, and is the roster eligible for the relevant regional list?
- Practical fit: Can the team attend and prepare within its travel and schedule constraints, and is the competitive level suitable for its goals?
This process prevents a common planning error: treating every visible tournament as an equivalent chance to change VRS. The ranking relevance depends on event status and applicable rules, while feasibility depends on the roster and the event’s calendar. Keep those questions separate when weighing an opportunity.
Regional standings and Major eligibility
Valve’s Major rulebook uses regional VRS lists for Europe, the Americas, and Asia. A roster’s regional assignment is based on the majority of its players. There is also a recent-region eligibility condition: a roster is eligible for a regional assignment only if it did not appear in another region’s VRS list during the preceding three calendar months.
These are regional-list and eligibility rules, not an alternative points formula. A team considering a regional event or Major invitation should verify which regional list applies to its roster and whether the recent-region condition is satisfied. A roster should not assume that it can choose whichever region appears most favorable; assignment and eligibility are constrained by the rules.

The regional rules also make roster planning more consequential than a simple organization-level label suggests. Since the roster is five athletes and regional assignment depends on a player majority, changes to the lineup can affect how the relevant roster is assessed. Confirm the rule against the actual lineup and the applicable period rather than relying on a past assignment.
Can open competition help a team enter the VRS path?
Valve’s tournament requirements allow open qualifiers in ranked-event structures, so teams that are not directly invited may still have an entry route where an event offers one. FACEIT’s support page also identifies ESEA League as a competitive-divisions pathway associated with HLTV.org coverage and VRS points on a path toward ESL Pro League.
These routes can provide opportunities to compete, but access to a pathway is not the same as a guaranteed VRS result. A team should confirm that the particular competition and event structure it enters are ranked, understand how qualification works, and assess whether its roster can meet the relevant conditions. The existence of an open qualifier or league progression route does not guarantee a specific placement, invitation, or points gain.

Valve’s rules establish the high-level relationship: ranked-tournament outcomes generate data used for relative roster performance, and VRS is published monthly. They do not, in the material available here, disclose a complete public formula that lets a team calculate the points for a given finish or predict exactly how far it will move.

That limitation changes how teams should set targets. Track whether an event counts, which roster competes, what snapshot governs invitations, and the results earned. Avoid building a budget or making a lineup decision around an assumed numerical payout that the rules do not promise. A team can make informed decisions about eligibility and opportunity without pretending to know an exact point conversion.
Likewise, a rank change should not be attributed to a single result unless the available standings and event information establish that relationship. Monthly publication and event-specific invite dates mean the timing of a result and the timing of an invitation both matter. The available rules support careful monitoring, not a guarantee that any one outcome will produce an immediate or predictable position change.
A practical planning sequence for a CS2 roster
- Define the goal. Decide whether the team needs a VRS-relevant result, an opportunity to qualify, or simply competitive experience. Do not treat these as the same objective.
- Verify the event. Confirm ranked status under the current Valve Tournament Operating Requirements and read the event’s own entry and invitation criteria.
- Map the dates. Note the invitation date and identify the most recent VRS snapshot that the organizer must use.
- Confirm the lineup. Check that the roster identity and expected match participation satisfy the direct-invite continuity condition if the team is relying on an invitation.
- Check regional rules. For Major-related planning, determine the roster’s region by player majority and verify the preceding three-calendar-month restriction.
- Assess feasibility. Weigh the format, travel and schedule demands, and competitive level. These affect whether the opportunity is realistic, even though they are not VRS scoring factors.
- Review the result without inventing a conversion. Record the roster and tournament outcome, then consult the next relevant official standings and future invite criteria rather than assigning an unsupported point value.
Common mistakes to avoid

Keep the rules current
Valve’s operating requirements, event invitation procedures, and standings can change. Before acting, consult the current Tournament Operating Requirements, current VRS release, and the target event’s criteria. Treat a monthly list, an organizer’s invitation date, and the roster that actually plays as connected but distinct pieces of the decision.
