In-game checkout depends on the exact game edition, publisher, account region, device platform or storefront, and identity requirements. Check the game’s own official checkout instructions before paying.
Everyday payments and game top-ups are separate
Visitors to mainland China can use several ways to pay merchants. A Tianhe District government guide says visitors can register Alipay or Weixin Pay with an international or local phone number or email, verify their identity with a passport, link supported international cards, and pay by scanning or presenting a QR code. The guide also describes UnionPay, cash services and e-CNY in pilot areas. Those are visitor-facing payment options—not evidence that a game’s checkout accepts them. Tianhe District’s payment guide
The State Council’s April 11, 2024 guide says overseas visitors can link some international cards, including Visa and Mastercard, to Alipay and WeChat Pay. It gives limits of $5,000 for a single transaction and $50,000 in annual cumulative transactions on the mobile payment platforms described in that guide. Payment products can have different requirements. The State Council’s 2025 working-and-living guide says overseas bank cards may require issuer verification and that card brands, limits and fees vary by product. It also lists e-wallets from multiple markets for direct QR payments in China. Follow the live prompts in your wallet and your card issuer’s rules; neither QR acceptance at shops nor a linked card guarantees acceptance in a game. Why a game may offer different payment methods
A game’s payment options are set by its own distribution and account setup. A mainland China edition and a global edition may have separate accounts, servers and billing. A publisher’s direct checkout may also differ from the storefront used on a phone, PC or console. Even similarly named versions should be treated as separate until the publisher confirms otherwise.
One issuer filing from September 2019 described Alipay, WeChat Pay and UnionPay as channels mainly used in that company’s PRC game operations, while its overseas channels included Apple’s App Store and Google Play. This is a historical disclosure by one company, not a current or universal map of game payments. Real-name requirements and in-game spending rules
A Ministry of Culture notice issued on December 1, 2016, and effective May 1, 2017, says online game operators must require valid identity documents for real-name registration and may not provide in-game recharge or consumption to guest-mode users. It also directs operators to set single-recharge limits and show a confirmation identifying the amount and the virtual items or services being purchased. These are requirements stated in the notice, not a guarantee that every game implements each feature in the same way. Ministry of Culture notice on online game operations
The notice also addresses disclosure of virtual-item names, functions, prices, exchange ratios and duration in specified circumstances. For random draws, it calls for disclosure of possible items and probabilities, as well as another way to obtain items or services with equivalent performance. Read the title’s own purchase screen and official terms to understand what applies to its checkout.

What to verify before you recharge
- Confirm the edition and server. Check whether you are using the mainland China version or an international/global release, and confirm which account and server you are purchasing for.
- Identify the platform and storefront. Note whether the purchase is made through the game publisher, a mobile app store, a PC storefront, or another official channel. Do not assume one platform’s payment methods carry over to another.
- Read the official checkout instructions. Check accepted payment methods, currency, region and account restrictions, identity verification, top-up limits, fees, exchange rate and refund rules. If any detail is unclear, ask the publisher or platform support before paying.
- Check your specific wallet and card. For a visitor wallet, verify that your card brand and issuer are supported, whether issuer approval is required, and what transaction limits or fees apply. Merchant QR-payment acceptance alone is not enough to establish game-store acceptance.
- Use only official payment routes. The sources here do not verify a third-party top-up service for any named game. Do not give an unofficial seller your password, one-time codes or identity documents.
- If a payment fails, stop and diagnose it. Ask official support whether the cause is account region, real-name verification, a payment-product restriction or an issuer decline. Avoid repeatedly retrying until you know whether a charge is pending.
How to compare two available checkout paths
If a game offers more than one official way to pay, compare the details for your account rather than ranking payment brands in general:
- Edition and server: Does the route credit the exact version and account you use?
- Platform or storefront: Is the purchase processed by the publisher or a platform, and does that match your device?
- Payment eligibility: Does the route accept your specific card or wallet, including issuer approval where required?
- Identity checks: Does it require real-name registration or other account verification?
- Total cost: What currency, fees, exchange rate and top-up limits apply?
- Support and refunds: Which publisher or platform handles failed payments, disputes and refund requests?
Without a named game and its current official checkout instructions, it is not possible to say whether a foreign card, Alipay, WeChat Pay or a third-party service will work for that title.
