LawBreakers was Cliff Bleszinski’s attempt to return to the shooter genre on his own terms: a skill-focused competitive game built around distinct character roles and abilities. Whether that amounted to “redeeming himself” is a matter of interpretation, not an industry-wide verdict. The game’s ambition was clear; its short service life was, too.
Why LawBreakers was a personal comeback
After leaving Epic Games, where he had been closely associated with the Gears of War franchise, Bleszinski co-founded Boss Key Productions and set out to make a new shooter. The framing of LawBreakers as a redemption story came from a 2016 GamesBeat headline and interview, which presented the project as a return and reinvention—not evidence that players or the industry had reached a shared verdict about his career. GamesBeat’s 2016 interview captures that moment.

The project was also a substantial commitment: PlayStation said Boss Key had been working on the PC game since 2014, and Bleszinski described creating both a studio and a game from scratch. In its 2016 PlayStation announcement, he called it “the skill-based competitive shooter made by shooter fans for shooter players that my team and I have always wanted to play.” That quote explains the team’s aspiration; it does not establish how well the game ultimately met it.
What LawBreakers was trying to do differently
LawBreakers was a competitive first-person shooter planned for PC and PlayStation 4, and it launched on both platforms in 2017. Its pitch emphasized skill and character identity. In the GamesBeat interview, Bleszinski described using roles and individual abilities to give characters gameplay depth, rather than leaning on a very large map count as the main source of variety.

That was a coherent design bet: make players learn what each character can do and how roles interact, then let that mastery create depth. But a strong design premise is not the same as broad appeal. The available interviews show what Bleszinski and Boss Key wanted to make, not proof that the approach worked for a large audience.
What went wrong at launch
By September 2017, Bleszinski was discussing a steep drop in PC player numbers and acknowledged a specific omission: LawBreakers should have launched with Team Deathmatch. GameSpot’s September 2017 report covered those comments and contemporary PC player figures. Those figures describe a moment reported at the time, not a current population count or a definitive measure of the game’s full audience.

The missing mode matters because it points to a gap between the game’s focused competitive vision and the familiar options some players expected at launch. It is a concrete mistake Bleszinski acknowledged, but the available reporting does not establish that this alone explains the game’s performance. The launch outcome cannot be reduced to a single mode, design choice, or player-count snapshot.
Why Bleszinski kept backing the game
In October 2017, Bleszinski was still publicly committing to support and market LawBreakers. He described it as a skill-based shooter and said its players loved it, while also recognizing that the game needed greater awareness. Those judgments about the game and its fans are his own. GameSpot’s October 2017 coverage records that continued commitment.

- Enjoy updated modes like conquest and breakthrough, plus the new hazard zone for added strategic depth
- Rich visuals and dynamic gameplay offer an immersive combat experience in a visually stunning environment
- Compatible with playstation 4, delivering an intense and engaging action-packed experience
That effort makes the redemption framing more complicated than a simple triumph-or-failure story. Bleszinski pursued a personal creative return, acknowledged at least one launch misstep, and continued to advocate for the game. None of that guarantees commercial success; it does show an attempt to respond and keep the project alive.
How LawBreakers ended
On June 11, 2018, the LawBreakers Team announced that the Steam game would become free-to-play while its servers remained open, then said support would end on September 14, 2018. The publisher gave the reason directly: “In light of the unfortunate news regarding Boss Key Productions shutting down, we regret to announce that we will be sunsetting our support of LawBreakers on September 14, 2018 as we are not able to operate the game.” The Steam notice is the primary source for the shutdown date and stated reason.

The ending reframes the comeback attempt. LawBreakers was not simply a return that failed to convince everyone; it was also a live game whose publisher said it could no longer operate it after Boss Key shut down. The sources support that service-sustainability explanation, but do not prove that any one design decision or market factor caused the outcome.

That depends on what “redeemed” means. If it means that Bleszinski returned to making shooters with a clear design point of view, LawBreakers was a serious attempt: it had a defined competitive focus, character-based depth, and a team willing to keep supporting it after launch. If redemption means a broadly accepted hit or a lasting commercial comeback, the record here does not support that conclusion. The game’s service ended in 2018, and the contemporary interviews do not establish a consensus about Bleszinski’s reputation.

- The No:1 LEGO video game franchise triumphantly returns with a fun filled, humorous journey based on the blockbuster Star Wars film
- LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The fairest answer is that LawBreakers was a creative comeback attempt, not a proven redemption. Its ambition and its shortcomings can both be true: Boss Key pursued a distinctive skill-based shooter, Bleszinski recognized a launch mistake, and the publisher ultimately could not continue operating the game.
