A college basketball coach’s “buyout” can mean money the school owes when it ends the contract, money the coach owes when leaving for certain other jobs, or both. The contract’s trigger, payment direction, formula and exceptions—not the headline amount—determine what happens.
What a coaching buyout means
There is no single buyout formula used in every college basketball coaching agreement. In the public contracts described here, school-initiated termination without cause and coach-initiated departure are treated as separate events, sometimes with separate payments.

For example, Missouri State’s agreement with men’s coach Cuonzo Martin distinguishes a school payment after termination without cause from liquidated damages owed by the coach for specified departures. Nebraska’s agreements with Fred Hoiberg and Amy Williams show coach-paid schedules linked to accepting certain basketball employment; those amounts can decline over time. What happens when a school fires a coach?
Termination for cause
Start with the agreement’s definition of cause, the process for invoking it, and any notice or opportunity to cure. The documents may also incorporate university or athletics procedures. Nebraska’s Hoiberg agreement refers to “Adequate Cause” and athletics procedures; a Texas A&M System record describes cause grounds that include agreement breaches and conduct-related matters. Poor results alone should not be assumed to qualify unless the contract says so.

Termination without cause
A school may have a contractual right to end employment without relying on the cause standard. The agreement may then require a payment to the coach, described as a buyout or liquidated damages. Missouri State’s Martin agreement ties the school’s buyout to amounts owed over the agreement term. A Texas A&M System record concerning coach Mark Lutz instead describes remaining-term base salary and a mitigation duty. The amount and mechanics therefore depend on the agreement’s wording. What happens when a coach leaves for another job?
A coach-side buyout does not necessarily apply to every resignation. Hoiberg’s Nebraska agreement provides a declining schedule for specified basketball employment and excludes resignation for other reasons. Williams’s agreement ties its schedule to accepting other employment related to college or professional basketball. The exact trigger matters: leaving for another school, taking a professional role, resigning for a different reason, or departing after a specified date may be treated differently under different contracts. How to compare the terms that affect the outcome
When reading an agreement, separate the event that triggers payment from the calculation and conditions that follow. Useful questions include:

- Who ends the relationship? Identify whether the school terminates, the coach resigns, or another event triggers the clause. Confirm who pays whom.
- What is the formula? Determine whether it is a fixed sum, a dated schedule that declines, or compensation remaining through the contract term. Check which salary, bonuses or other compensation categories count.
- Do mitigation or offsets apply? A school’s payment may be reduced by qualifying later compensation, or the coach may have to make reasonable efforts to obtain new employment. Read how the agreement defines eligible compensation and required efforts.
- When is payment due? Check whether payment is a lump sum or installments, when installments begin, and how long they continue.
- What exceptions or procedures apply? Look for exclusions, notice and cure periods, release conditions, documentation requirements, or approvals.
- Do institutional rules govern? An approving board or university-system policy may affect the contract or limit particular clauses.
Kansas State’s 2023 agreement with Jerome Tang illustrates why a stated amount alone can be misleading: the scheduled payments run over 24 months, qualifying subsequent compensation offsets them dollar-for-dollar, and the agreement requires reasonable efforts to seek subsequent employment at an actual market rate. A policy example: the UNC System
University of North Carolina System Policy 1100.3 provides one example of institutional rules that can shape a coaching contract. It says a contract longer than one year for a head athletic coach or athletic director is not valid until its terms are approved by the board of trustees. For a specified category of institution-paid buyout, the policy caps the clause at remaining base salary plus bonuses or deferred compensation already earned or vested, and requires a clearly discernible relationship to likely actual financial loss. This is a UNC System policy example, not a nationwide rule; check the policy’s current revision and applicability before relying on it. UNC System Policy 1100.3.

A number is meaningful only alongside its trigger and conditions. A school’s potential obligation after a without-cause termination is not the same as a coach’s possible obligation after accepting another basketball job. The amount may also change with the date, the compensation counted, offsets, mitigation duties and payment timing. Public examples establish that these clauses vary; they do not establish a national average or a standard buyout amount.

For a particular coach, use the executed agreement and amendments, not a summary headline. Confirm the agreement’s execution date and term, later changes, defined terms, applicable procedures and governing law. “Liquidated damages” is the contract’s label for an agreed amount; the label by itself does not determine how a provision would be treated in a dispute.
