How College Football Injury Reports and Game-Day Availability Designations Work

College football availability reports use participation estimates, but labels and deadlines vary by conference, season and competition.

College football does not have one universal injury-report schedule or set of labels. Official policies generally call these availability reports, and the rules depend on the competition: conference policies govern specified league games, while the College Football Playoff has its own process. A designation estimates whether a player will participate; it is not a diagnosis or a guarantee.

What the designations mean

Pregame labels are participation estimates. In its 2025–26 football regulations, the SEC defines the statuses using a percentage ladder; the Big 12’s published 2025–26 definitions use the same figures. Those percentages are policy definitions, not measured medical odds.

Status Policy meaning
Available Will play, or 100%, when a previously reported player is expected to participate. The SEC treats an unlisted player as Available unless exempt.
Probable Probable to play, or 75%.
Questionable Uncertain to play, or 50%.
Doubtful Unlikely to play, or 25%.
Out Will not play, or 0%.

On game day, the SEC uses three labels: Available means the player will dress and be available; Game Time Decision means coaches and/or medical personnel need to assess the player during pregame warmups; and Out means the player will not dress or be available. The SEC says Game Time Decision should be used sparingly; excessive use can prompt review and additional penalties. [SEC 2025–26 regulations]

Labels are not identical across leagues. The Big Ten’s 2026 process includes Out (1st Half), as well as Probable, Questionable, Doubtful and Out in midweek reports; its game-day report uses Game Time Decision, Out and Out (1st Half). Big 12 materials explain Out (1st Half) as a first-half suspension following the NCAA targeting rule. The ACC’s 2025 summary lists Available, Probable, Questionable, Doubtful and Out before game day, then Available, Game Time Decision and Out on game day. When reports are due—and which games they cover

These schedules are competition- and season-specific, not a nationwide rule. The examples below reflect the cited policies and should not be assumed to apply to another league, a nonconference game, or a later season.

Policy Coverage stated in source Reporting schedule
Big Ten, 2026 Games against conference opponents Reports three, two and one days before kickoff, each due by 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT / 5 p.m. PT; game-day report due two hours before kickoff.
SEC, 2025–26 regulations SEC games For a Saturday game, initial report Wednesday by 7 p.m. CT / 8 p.m. ET, updates Thursday and Friday by the same deadline, and game-day report 90 minutes before scheduled start. For other game days, the sequence shifts to corresponding days.
Big 12, 2025–26 Conference games Daily reports begin three days before the game and post at 9 p.m. CT; final report is 90 minutes before kickoff.
ACC, 2025 As stated on the ACC reporting page Daily football reports begin three nights before the game, plus a game-day report two hours before scheduled game time.
College Football Playoff, 2025–26 Playoff participants Teams report three days before each playoff game, update daily, and submit a final report 90 minutes before game time.

Sources: Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, ACC and CFP. The SEC schedule above comes from its 2025–26 regulations; the Big Ten schedule is specifically for 2026. Check the governing league or playoff page for the game and season in question.

How to read a report responsibly

  1. Identify the governing competition. The Big Ten announcement limits its policy to conference-opponent games; SEC and Big 12 materials describe conference-game reporting, and CFP rules cover playoff participants. Do not assume those policies cover other matchups.
  2. Check the report’s timestamp. Scheduled updates mean a midweek estimate may change before the final report. The cited policies do not say that an earlier status guarantees eventual participation.
  3. Read the exact label under that policy. Questionable is not the same as Out. A game-day Game Time Decision means a pregame assessment is still needed.
  4. Do not infer a diagnosis. A player’s status may relate to injury, illness, suspension, ineligibility or a personal matter. The ACC also describes uncertainty as potentially arising for any reason and frames its policy around protecting sensitive information.
  5. Treat omissions according to the specific policy. The Big Ten says unlisted players are Available; the SEC says the same unless exempt. That default is not established here as universal across college football.

What the SEC requires of teams

The SEC’s 2025–26 regulations require good-faith reporting, prohibit gamesmanship intended to conceal participation status, require reasonable progression between designations absent extenuating circumstances, and say public comments should not conflict with the report. These are SEC-specific requirements, not a rule to attribute to every conference. [SEC 2025–26 regulations]
