If an NFL defensive star is ruled out before kickoff, he is listed as inactive and cannot play in that game. The team must cover his responsibilities with players eligible on the game-day roster, but the NFL does not require a one-for-one replacement: coaches may use a reserve, shift another defender, or adjust the defensive package.
What does “ruled out” mean?
The NFL’s injury-report policy defines Out as “the player will not play.” Questionable means it is uncertain whether the player will play, while Doubtful means it is unlikely he will participate. The team’s game-day inactive announcement provides the final availability decision.
The NFL has cited a historical figure that approximately 95 percent of players listed as “Probable” in prior years played in the game. That number explained the league’s decision to remove that category; it is not a current estimate for players listed Questionable or Doubtful.
Who takes the missing player’s place?
There is no league-mandated replacement or automatic “next man up.” Coaches decide how to cover the absent player’s snaps and assignments. They might give more work to a reserve at the same position, move a defender from another spot, or change which personnel group they use. A depth chart can offer context, but it does not establish who will handle every snap or responsibility.

- Wilson The Duke NFL Replica Football - Official Size, Brown
- OFFICIAL SIZE: Official regulation size for High School and College Football, ideal for ages 14 and up
- REPLICA STYLE: Built to get as close as we can to the real Duke delivering a similar look and performance, and updated with the red, silver, and blue NFL Shield

The likely adjustment depends on the role the player performs, the team’s scheme, and the opponent. For example, losing an edge rusher could reduce the expected pressure from that position; losing a linebacker could affect run fits, coverage, or defensive communication; losing a defensive back could change receiver matchups or coverage calls. Those are possible tactical effects, not guaranteed outcomes or quantified league-wide findings.
How many players can a team use?
The NFL’s roster FAQ says a team may have 48 players on its game-day list if at least eight offensive linemen are included; otherwise, the limit is 47. The broader active/inactive roster is 53 players. Standard practice-squad elevations can raise the total to 54 or 55, but the game-day eligibility limit still governs who can play.

Can an inactive defender enter after kickoff?
No. A player designated inactive cannot be brought into the game as a replacement after kickoff. The exception readers may hear about is for a qualifying emergency third quarterback under narrow conditions; it is not a way to activate an inactive defensive player. The NFL’s emergency quarterback guidance says that an Emergency Third Quarterback who enters must line up under center or in shotgun and take the snap.

The absence means the coaches must distribute the player’s role among eligible defenders or alter the plan. It does not, by itself, establish a predictable drop in defensive efficiency, pressure rate, points allowed, or chance of winning. To assess a particular game, look for reliable team-specific reporting on the replacement, assignment, scheme, and opponent rather than assuming the listed backup will replicate the star’s impact.
