Cross-save moves a game’s save data or account state between platforms. Cross-progression is the result players care about: the same campaign, character, inventory, or unlocks continues on another device. Most systems rely on a publisher account rather than the console profile alone, and each game decides which platforms, purchases, downloadable content, currencies, and multiplayer features are included.
To use it, update the game, link every platform to the same publisher account, create or sync a save, then sign in with that identity on the destination platform and load the uploaded progress. Cross-save does not automatically mean cross-play or cross-buy.

Cross-save and cross-progression are related, but not identical
Cross-save describes the technical storage and retrieval process. A game uploads a save file, character state, or service-account data to cloud storage controlled by the publisher or platform. Another installation authenticates the same identity and downloads that data.
Cross-progression describes the player-facing continuation: you can leave an open-world RPG on one platform and resume the same campaign, character, inventory, achievements, or unlocks on another. Publishers often use the terms interchangeably, but their implementations differ. A traditional single-player game may synchronize discrete save files, while a persistent online RPG may keep your character permanently attached to a service account.

The distinction matters because a feature can cover only one part of the experience. A game might synchronize your character but not your platform trophies, purchased expansion, premium currency, or multiplayer matchmaking. Treat the game’s own account and entitlement rules as the authority.
How a typical cross-save setup works
Most supported games follow the same identity-and-cloud sequence. Complete these steps on the source platform before attempting to load progress elsewhere.
- Update the game on both platforms. Cross-progression features are commonly added or changed in patches. An outdated client may hide the account-linking menu or fail to recognize a newer save format.
- Create or sign in to the publisher account. Use the account belonging to the game’s service, not a second email address created for the destination platform. Record the exact sign-in method if the service permits email, console authentication, or a linked third-party login.
- Link each platform account to that same identity. Follow the game’s Account, Connections, or Cross Progression menu. Linking two different publisher accounts usually creates separate progress rather than merging it.
- Make a fresh save or activate synchronization. Some games upload automatically; others require an explicit cloud-save or cross-progression toggle. Stay in the game until the upload finishes. A local save made before linking may not be present online.
- Sign in on the destination platform with the identical publisher account. Do not rely on the destination console’s currently selected user if it maps to a different service account.
- Load the synchronized data. Open Load Game, Continue, or the game’s cross-progression screen and select the uploaded save or character set. Keep the source save until you have confirmed the destination copy works.
Cyberpunk 2077’s support instructions illustrate the complete flow: the latest Quick, Auto, Manual, and other saves upload automatically after cross progression is enabled; a cloud icon indicates availability; linking the same CD PROJEKT RED account on the second platform makes the save selectable from Load Game.
Why the publisher account is the real key
A PlayStation Network, Xbox, Steam, Epic, or mobile login identifies a platform installation. The publisher account is what tells the game that two installations belong to the same player. If you start a new character while signed into another publisher identity, the game may correctly treat it as unrelated progress. Account linking therefore needs to happen before you invest hours in a second copy.
What different open-world RPGs actually carry over
Support is title-specific, so compare the game’s documented platform matrix rather than assuming every open-world RPG behaves like another. These examples show three distinct approaches.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The official support flow requires an updated game, a linked CD PROJEKT RED account, and a newly created save that uploads to the cloud. After signing in to that account on the other platform, the save appears in Load Game. The feature is designed for continuing the same open-world campaign, not for combining two independent playthroughs into one.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 uses the same practical pattern but makes the upload status visible. Enable cross progression, create a save, wait for the cloud icon, then connect the same account on the second platform. The destination installation can load the uploaded file alongside its local saves.
Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact is account-centered rather than file-centered. HoYoverse’s September 9, 2025 help guidance says to sign in on the other device with the same HoYoverse Account credentials or linked third-party account. Its listed support covers PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation, and Xbox, with progress, items, and currency loading after authentication. The account you choose at the start determines which world and characters appear.

Destiny 2
Destiny 2 calls its system Cross Save. You choose one active Destiny 2 account and character set, then make those characters available on connected platforms. Gear, weapons, and loot earned by that active set can be used wherever you play. This is a service-account model, not a collection of independent console saves that are merged together.
Cross-save is not cross-play
Cross-save answers, “Can my progress follow me?” Cross-play answers, “Can players on different platforms join the same multiplayer activity?” They are separate permissions and separate engineering problems. Bungie’s official Destiny 2 guide states: “Cross Save and Cross Play are two separate processes.”
A game can let you carry a character from a console to PC while restricting multiplayer sessions to the same platform family, or it can provide cross-play without allowing a campaign save to leave one ecosystem. Check the game’s multiplayer documentation independently. Do not infer cross-play from a cloud-save icon, and do not infer cross-save from a cross-platform matchmaking announcement.

It does not prove cross-buy
Cross-save moves data; it does not normally grant a free copy of the game on every platform. The support descriptions for the examples above explain account and save synchronization, not a universal purchase license. You may need to own the game separately on the destination platform.
It does not guarantee downloadable-content transfer
Expansion licenses, deluxe-edition bonuses, season passes, and platform-store purchases can be tied to the store where they were bought. A character may load successfully while an expansion area remains locked. Check the game’s store and downloadable-content policy before buying a second edition, and verify that the destination account is eligible for the same add-on.
It does not guarantee currency or every item
Genshin Impact’s listed cross-save behavior includes progress, items, and currency, but that statement is specific to that game and its account system. Other games may separate platform-restricted currency from account-wide items. Read the title’s rules for premium currency, gifts, event rewards, and consumables instead of generalizing from another RPG.
It does not merge two histories
Cross-progression usually selects one account or one uploaded save. Starting separate characters on two platforms does not imply that levels, quests, inventories, or achievements will be combined. Back up or preserve the original save before testing a new link.

Account-linking hazards and recovery
The most expensive mistake is choosing the wrong publisher account at activation. Before confirming a link, check the displayed email or account name on every platform and decide which character set should become authoritative.

Bungie documents a particularly important restriction: if you choose the wrong linked account, you may need to disable Cross Save, correct the links, and wait 90 days before enabling it again. That cooldown can leave the intended characters unavailable across platforms for months. The safe procedure is to inventory your accounts first, sign out of unintended identities, and activate Cross Save only after the correct set is visible.
For file-based systems, keep the source installation intact until the destination has loaded the expected save. If a cloud icon or upload indicator never appears, return to the source platform, check network connectivity and account status, create a new manual save, and wait for synchronization before trying again. If the destination shows only a blank profile, verify the publisher account rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

- Platform matrix: Confirm the exact PC storefront, console generation, and mobile operating systems supported. “Console” is not a sufficiently precise promise when versions differ.
- Progress model: Determine whether the game synchronizes individual campaign files or exposes a persistent service-account character.
- Required identity: Note the publisher account, permitted third-party logins, and any limit on linked platform accounts.
- Content scope: Check whether quests, characters, inventory, achievements, premium currency, expansions, and edition bonuses each transfer.
- Multiplayer: Verify cross-play separately if playing with friends on another platform matters.
- Conflict behavior: Find out whether the game chooses the newest save, offers a list of cloud files, or warns before overwriting local data.
- Unlink rules: Look for cooldowns, one-time link restrictions, or a requirement to contact support before changing identities.
- Ownership: Confirm whether the destination platform requires its own game license and DLC purchase.
Common problems and practical fixes
The save is missing on the second platform
First verify that both installations use the same publisher account, including the same login method. Then return to the source platform, make a new manual save, wait for its upload indicator, and reopen Load Game on the destination. A local console backup is not proof that the publisher cloud contains the file.
The game starts a new character instead
Stop before progressing. A new character usually indicates a different service identity or an account-link step that was skipped. Sign out, authenticate with the account that owns the original progress, and check the game’s account-connections page.
Items or an expansion are unavailable
Separate save synchronization from entitlements. Confirm that the destination account owns the required game edition and that the add-on is supported across the two platforms. Some items can be account-bound while store licenses remain platform-bound.
Friends cannot join from another platform
Your save may be working exactly as designed. Check the game’s cross-play setting and multiplayer platform list; cross-save alone does not open mixed-platform matchmaking.

You linked the wrong account
Do not repeatedly unlink and relink in the hope that the problem will clear. Check the service’s documented cooldown and recovery process first. Destiny 2’s documented 90-day reactivation wait is a warning that account changes can have long consequences.
