How weapon scaling works
Scaling is the link between your character’s stat investment and a weapon’s damage. The three stats that matter are Brutality, Tactics, and Survival. An item can scale with one stat or list two possible scaling stats. For a dual-stat item, the higher of the two stats is the active one for damage scaling; the item does not add both together.

The item icon gives you a quick visual check: its dominant color indicates which of its listed stats currently leads. If the listed stats are equal, the icon splits its color. That makes the icon a useful confirmation, but the item’s actual listed stats are the important reference—do not decide how an item scales from its weapon category or appearance alone.
Choosing a stat direction
When you intend to build around a particular weapon, keep most of your scroll investment aligned with the stat that weapon uses. On gear with two listed stats, your higher stat among those two is the one that matters for scaling. If your investment makes the other listed stat higher, the active scaling stat changes accordingly.

This is why a weapon’s listed scaling is worth checking when you pick it up and when you compare it with another drop. Two weapons that seem to fill a similar role may not benefit from the same stat investment. Conversely, an item listing two stats can remain useful when either listed stat matches the direction of your build, depending on which is higher.
For example, if a weapon lists Brutality and Tactics, compare those two values in your current build rather than assuming that its weapon type fixes the answer. If Brutality is higher, that is the active scaling stat; if Tactics is higher, Tactics leads. Equal values are reflected by a split-color icon. This simple check can help explain why an item’s scaling changes as your stat investment changes.
Brutality weapons are usually lighter and faster, while Survival weapons are usually slower and heavier, according to the official gear reference. These are tendencies, not rules that determine an individual weapon’s scaling or make every weapon in a stat category behave alike. Judge the weapon by its listed stats, moveset, and effects as well as its color.

Colorless gear uses your highest player stat, even if that stat differs from the item’s usual scaling. In practical terms, a colorless item can follow a Brutality-focused, Tactics-focused, or Survival-focused build according to which stat is highest; it is not locked to the stat its base version would ordinarily use.
The official wiki describes colorless items as obtainable from cursed chests and when unlocking a blueprint from the Collector. Their scaling rule is especially useful when comparing them with ordinary gear: do not assume a colorless item will follow the same stat choice as the corresponding base item. Check your highest stat and evaluate its effects and moveset in the context of your run.

Colorless describes how the item chooses its scaling stat, not a promise that it is automatically the strongest option for every run. Its effect, moveset, gear level, quality, and fit with your other equipment still matter. If your highest stat differs from the base item’s usual stat, the colorless version follows the highest one instead.
How legendary weapons scale
Legendaries are colorless, so they scale with your highest stat. Under the rule set documented for update 3.0, they no longer use the two highest stats together. They also receive +6 gear power and have a guaranteed legendary affix. The official wiki describes their power increase as the same as that of S-quality items, but that does not mean that every other aspect of a legendary and an S-quality item is interchangeable.

Update 3.0 changed the earlier legendary scaling approach. Before the change, legendaries scaled with the two highest stats. Motion Twin said the arrangement was “mostly overpowered,” counter-intuitive because it encouraged splitting stats when ordinary builds should do the opposite, and not fun because it added more damage on top of damage. That explanation is the developers’ rationale for the 3.0 change, not a claim that one stat distribution is right for every build.
Legendaries cannot be upgraded, and their item-specific legendary affix is additional to their normal rolled affixes. Motion Twin’s update 3.0 notes say a legendary weapon “will always have its Legendary Affix on top of its normal rolled ones.” Thus a legendary drop has a fixed signature effect alongside its ordinary affixes, rather than replacing the ordinary affix set with that effect.
The old double-stat rule can make advice from before update 3.0 confusing: splitting investment between two stats was once relevant to legendary scaling, but the documented current rule is that a legendary uses only your highest stat. Do not apply the former rule when evaluating a legendary under the 3.0 ruleset.

Affixes are additional effects shown beneath an item’s primary description. They can add conditional damage or produce effects such as arrows and grenades. An affix’s trigger or condition is as important as its headline benefit: an effect that increases damage against an enemy affected by a status only helps when your build can apply that status reliably.
Affix-created arrows and grenades can interact with status-on-hit effects, according to the affix reference. This means an affix may matter beyond its direct damage or utility: it can contribute to the way your other effects are applied. The useful question is not only “What does this affix do?” but also “Can this weapon and the rest of my build make its condition happen often enough to matter?”
Read the effect and its condition together
When inspecting a drop, identify the benefit and then identify what must happen for it to activate. If an effect is conditional, check whether another weapon, an affix, or your existing approach to a fight can reliably create that condition. A strong-sounding damage bonus is less useful when its trigger rarely occurs; a more modest effect can be a better fit if your build makes it dependable.
For example, a damage bonus against a status-affected enemy is only as useful as your ability to apply that status. Check whether your weapon or other gear can cause it consistently, rather than choosing the affix based on the bonus wording alone. Similarly, an affix that creates arrows or grenades may have added value if those effects interact with status-on-hit effects in your setup.

For legendary equipment, consider both layers: the item’s guaranteed legendary affix and its normal rolled affixes. The guaranteed effect is specific to the item, while ordinary affixes are part of the drop’s other effects. Evaluate how the full combination works with your build rather than judging the item by its legendary label alone.
How to compare two weapon drops
When deciding whether to replace a weapon, compare the parts that affect how it performs in your actual run. A higher label or a single attractive affix does not settle the choice: scaling, moveset, gear level and quality, and interactions with the rest of your build all matter.
- Check the base weapon and moveset. Consider whether its attacks and effects suit the way you are fighting. Broad tendencies associated with a stat are not a substitute for judging the individual weapon.
- Check the active scaling stat. Read the item’s listed stat or stats. If it lists two, the higher one is active; use the icon’s dominant color as a visual cross-check. For colorless gear, use your highest stat instead.
- Compare gear level and quality. Include these in the comparison, but do not infer a complete ranking from the legendary or S-quality label alone. The rules described here establish legendary power and scaling changes, not a universal formula for choosing between every pair of drops.
- Read every ordinary affix. Note what each does and whether it has a condition. For conditional effects, ask whether your current build can apply the required status or otherwise trigger the effect consistently.
- Look for interactions with the rest of the build. Consider how the weapon’s affixes work with your other gear and effects. Affix-generated arrows or grenades can interact with status-on-hit effects, so an effect may have value through that interaction as well as through its direct result.
- Include a legendary effect, if present. Account for the guaranteed item-specific affix alongside the normal rolled affixes, then judge the whole combination against your current weapon and build.
Use the comparison as a whole rather than letting one number or label decide it. A weapon aligned with your higher relevant stat may suit your build, but a different moveset or more useful affix combination can also affect the choice. The available mechanics do not supply a universal ranking formula for every pair of drops, so the practical test is how well each option performs with your actual equipment and approach.
The result is a build-specific decision, not a permanent ranking of weapon types. A legendary may be attractive because its fixed effect and ordinary affixes suit your run, but the label itself does not prove it is better than the weapon you already have.
Version context: why older guides can mislead
Update 1.9 removed scrolls from items, according to the official gear history. The listed exception is Hunter’s Grenade, which gains one scroll of each stat at 3 or more Boss Stem Cells. A guide that describes ordinary gear as carrying scrolls may therefore be describing an older ruleset rather than the documented post-1.9 behavior.

Update 3.0 made a separate change to legendaries: it removed their former scaling with two highest stats, retained their colorless status, added +6 gear power, and replaced a guaranteed starred affix with a guaranteed legendary affix. When following advice that predates that update, check whether it assumes double-stat scaling or the old starred-affix behavior before applying it to your run.
