How Did Notch Think of Minecraft? The Games and Experiment Behind It

Notch traced Minecraft to a mix of game-design influences and a prototype experiment that helped reveal its recognizable first-person form.

Markus “Notch” Persson said Minecraft grew from a specific design goal: combine the sandbox depth of Dwarf Fortress, the intuitive interface of RollerCoaster Tycoon, and the silliness of Dungeon Keeper in a 3D dungeon-building game. A first-person experiment in his prototype then led him toward the game people recognize as Minecraft.

The idea began as a mix of three games

In a 2011 interview, Persson said he admired the scale and complexity of Dwarf Fortress but found its controls frustrating. He wanted to make a three-dimensional dungeon-building game that kept the sandbox qualities while making interaction more intuitive and the tone more playful.

He described the intended combination as Dwarf Fortress’s sandbox nature, RollerCoaster Tycoon’s intuitive interface, and Dungeon Keeper’s silliness. These references point to different design aims, rather than a single game serving as a blueprint. Persson’s 2011 Game Developer interview gives his account of that initial concept.

Influence Role in Persson’s description
Dwarf Fortress Sandbox freedom and complexity; also a major gameplay inspiration.
RollerCoaster Tycoon An intuitive interface.
Dungeon Keeper A silly, playful tone.
Infiniminer A block-based visual reference associated with Minecraft’s early presentation.

This is not an exhaustive list of every influence. It reflects Persson’s interview accounts and the later historical summary from Xbox Wire.

A first-person experiment was the turning point

Persson said the project changed direction when he tried a first-person mode in the prototype: “When I tried out a first person mode in the prototype, I stumbled on what Minecraft is now.” That is his description of an experiment revealing a promising form for the game—not evidence that every recognizable feature appeared at once.

His account connects the initial building concept to the perspective and play that became central to Minecraft. The prototype still had to develop; a first-person view was a turning point in exploration, not a complete development plan.

Why blocks and procedural worlds appealed to him

In a 2010 interview, Persson named Dwarf Fortress and roguelikes as major gameplay inspirations. He also discussed Infiniminer’s visual style: he liked that it left room for the player’s imagination, was easy to recognize, suited a small development team, and could display many blocks at high frame rates. Xbox Wire’s 2024 retrospective likewise names Infiniminer among the influences on Minecraft’s early creation.

Persson’s interest went beyond a blocky look. He said he was drawn to interactive worlds rather than static scenery, and to procedural generation: giving a computer rules for making a world instead of specifying every world in advance. Those interests help explain the appeal of a game built around exploring and changing a world, rather than following a fixed sequence through handcrafted scenes. Read his 2010 Game Developer interview for his comments on these design interests.

How the early project became Minecraft

Xbox Wire’s May 2024 retrospective says Persson began work on a project initially called “Cave Game” about a week before May 16, 2009. It says the title later passed through “Minecraft: Order of the Stone” before being shortened to Minecraft. The early Java Classic version let players dig and build freely; Creative and Survival modes followed during 2009.

A 2011 interview, meanwhile, places the first prototype’s release in early June 2009. Those dates describe different milestones—work beginning and a prototype being released—so they should not be treated as conflicting dates for one event.

The project continued to grow after the initial building idea. Xbox Wire dates the addition of crafting to January 2010, minecarts to June 2010, Survival multiplayer to August 2010, and the full 1.0 release to November 18, 2011. These later additions show the game expanding over time; they do not explain the original spark.

The chronology and early milestones above are from Xbox Wire’s 2024 retrospective.

A game that is also a creative tool

In a 2012 BAFTA interview, Persson described Minecraft as both a game and a level editor, saying, “Having the game be the actual level editor itself turns it into something between a game and a tool.” He framed the design challenge as limiting the player’s tools while leaving broad creative possibilities: “It’s about limiting the power of the user but giving them infinite potential.”

That idea helps connect the influences and the prototype experiment. Minecraft was not simply a dungeon-building game with blocks; its world could also serve as the space players used to build, alter, and invent. Persson’s comments are in BAFTA’s 2012 interview.

What most likely sparked Minecraft

Persson’s own account points to an iterative combination: borrow the sandbox ambition of Dwarf Fortress, pursue a more intuitive way to interact, add playful tone, and experiment with first-person play until the prototype suggested a more compelling direction. His interest in procedural, interactive worlds and the block-based visual approach helped make that direction workable. These interviews explain the influences he identified; they do not establish that those were the only influences or provide a complete development record.
