Microsoft said the original Xbox logo was meant to signal powerful technology, an exhilarating experience and fresh, inventive gameplay. The company unveiled it on September 20, 2000, but its announcement did not identify the logo’s designer or explain why the mark uses an X or the color green.
What Microsoft said the Xbox logo was meant to communicate
When Microsoft announced the logo on September 20, 2000, it described the mark as three-dimensional and said it was designed to convey three ideas:
- Powerful technology
- An exhilarating experience
- Fresh, inventive gameplay
John O’Rourke, then Microsoft’s director of Xbox marketing, explained the intended feeling: “We wanted the logo to convey the newness and excitement of Xbox – to let gamers know they will enter a new world.” Microsoft’s September 20, 2000 announcement is the clearest official account of the logo’s purpose.
What the logo looked like on the original console
In its January 6, 2001 console unveiling announcement, Microsoft described the black Xbox console as bearing a large X with a signature green Xbox “jewel” at its center. That documents how the mark appeared on the hardware; it does not explain the visual choices behind the X or green color. Microsoft’s console announcement also says the console and controller were based on input from more than 5,000 gamers and game creators. It does not attribute that input to the logo.

Who designed the original Xbox logo?
The cited Microsoft announcements do not name an individual designer or describe the logo’s development process. They establish the public rationale Microsoft gave for the mark, not who created it or how its final form was chosen.
Why is the Xbox logo green?
Microsoft called the green element on the console a signature Xbox “jewel,” but the announcement does not say why green was selected. The available official statements therefore support describing the color and its place in the design, not assigning it a specific symbolic origin.
