They are separate from experience points and level-ups: battles can award both EXP and EVs, but they affect growth in different ways. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, you can train EVs through standard battles or items, then inspect the resulting distribution in the summary screen.
What EVs do—and what they don’t do
Effort Values are accumulated training points assigned to a Pokémon’s stats. They help explain why two Pokémon of the same species and level can have different stat totals: EV investment is one of several inputs to the game’s stat calculation.
EVs are not EXP. EXP moves a Pokémon toward its next level, and leveling up causes stats to grow; EVs shape the stats within the game’s stat system. A battle may award EXP and EVs at the same time, but one does not stand in for the other. Nintendo’s beginner guidance describes EXP and level-based growth, while the EV mechanics are documented in specialist references.
EVs also are not a universal feature with identical rules in every Pokémon game. Always check the particular title before applying a training method or cap.

How EV totals translate into stats
In the modern EV system described by the mechanics reference, each Pokémon can have up to 510 EVs in total, with up to 252 useful EVs assigned to one stat. At level 100, every four EVs contribute one point to the relevant stat, before other stat-calculation factors are considered. That makes 252 EVs worth up to 63 stat points at level 100 under this rule of thumb.
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| 510 total EVs | The overall EV budget for one Pokémon in the modern system. |
| 252 useful EVs per stat | The maximum useful investment in a single stat. |
| 4 EVs per stat point at level 100 | A level-100 rule of thumb; gains are scaled by the stat formula at lower levels. |
A common distribution puts 252 EVs in each of two stats. That uses 504 of the 510 total, leaving six EVs. Those six do not make another full stat point under the four-EV rule at level 100. The 252/252 distribution is a framework, not a universally best build; the useful allocation depends on the Pokémon’s role and battle context.
These modern caps have not applied throughout the series. Generations I and II use Stat Experience rather than the modern EV system. The modern EV system begins in Generation III, and the useful per-stat cap became 252 in Generation VI. Earlier games allowed stored values up to 255 in a stat, but values above 252 did not improve the stat because of division by four.

How to train EVs in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
In Scarlet and Violet, defeating wild Pokémon in standard battles awards EVs, and different species give different yields. Stat-specific vitamins and other items can also change a Pokémon’s EVs; feathers provide smaller increments according to the general mechanics references. Item details and availability depend on the game, so do not assume a quantity or shop location from another title.
- Choose the stats you want to develop. Base the distribution on the Pokémon’s intended role rather than assuming the same spread works for every species or format.
- Check the EV graph. Open the Pokémon’s summary screen and inspect the graph to see its accumulated investment. Scarlet and Violet show a graph, not a simple universally visible numeric counter.
- Use standard battles or applicable items. Battle species with known EV yields for targeted training, or use stat-raising items available in the game.
- Check the graph again. Use it to confirm the general distribution after training.
- Correct unwanted investment if needed. Scarlet and Violet have EV-lowering berries and Fresh-Start Mochi as reset or reduction options, as documented in the game-specific mechanics references.
Do not use Let’s Go auto battles when the goal is EV training: in Scarlet and Violet, those battles do not award EVs. The distinction matters because they are a different activity from standard battles against wild Pokémon.
Scarlet and Violet do not include Pokérus as an EV multiplier.

Why EV rules differ between Pokémon games
Legends: Arceus uses Effort Levels, also called Ganbaru Values, rather than the ordinary EV/IV contribution to stats. Its stat system should not be explained using Scarlet and Violet’s EV caps or training assumptions.
For Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Nintendo’s beginner material says that battles provide EXP and leveling grows stats, but that page does not describe Z-A’s EV implementation. It therefore does not establish whether or how Z-A uses EVs; do not infer its rules from Scarlet and Violet.

When looking up any other game, verify five things before training: whether it uses EVs or a different effort system, its total and per-stat caps, which activities award training values, how the interface displays them, and whether the game has ways to lower or reset them.
Do you need to optimize EVs?
EV training is a way to shape stats, not a requirement established for finishing the story. If you are learning the system, start by checking the summary graph and noticing which activities change it. For competitive or otherwise specialized builds, choose a distribution for the specific Pokémon, moveset, level, and format rather than treating a common spread as a rule for every team.
