For a wired headset, plug its 3.5 mm connector into the headset jack on a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller. For wireless audio, use a headset that explicitly supports your Xbox console and follow its model-specific pairing instructions. A headset’s Bluetooth support for phones or PCs does not, by itself, mean it can pair directly with an Xbox.
Connect a wired 3.5 mm headset
- Check that your headset has a 3.5 mm plug and your controller has a 3.5 mm headset jack.
- Plug the headset into the controller’s jack. The console connection is through the controller, not a headset jack on the console.
Microsoft lists its Xbox Stereo Headset for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; it connects directly to the controller through the 3.5 mm jack. Other headsets may differ: check the exact model’s Xbox compatibility and instructions if its microphone or chat features do not work.
Connect a wireless headset
Confirm that the headset’s specifications explicitly list support for your Xbox console, then use the manufacturer’s pairing instructions for that model. Microsoft says the Xbox Wireless Headset connects to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S using Xbox Wireless technology.
Bluetooth support is not the same as Xbox console support. Microsoft lists Bluetooth on the Xbox Wireless Headset for mobile devices and PC; that does not establish that a generic Bluetooth headset can pair directly with an Xbox console. A headset can use Bluetooth with a phone or PC and a different connection method with an Xbox.

Check optical and USB headset setups
Optical or USB audio equipment can have model- and console-specific requirements. Xbox Wire notes that some headsets using an optical cable may require a firmware update to support game and chat audio over USB on Xbox Series X. Check the headset maker’s compatibility information and setup instructions for your particular headset and console before changing its connection method.

What to check if audio or chat does not work
- For a wired headset: Confirm the plug and controller jack are 3.5 mm, and that the headset is fully connected.
- For a wireless headset: Verify the exact model lists Xbox console support; phone or PC Bluetooth support alone is not enough.
- For microphone or chat problems: Check the headset maker’s Xbox-specific instructions. A 3.5 mm connection does not guarantee that every feature of every third-party headset works identically.
- For optical or USB equipment on Xbox Series X: Check whether the headset maker specifies a firmware update or other model-specific requirements.
