Golf’s default Rules prohibit unreasonable delay: the first breach brings one penalty stroke, the second brings the general penalty, and a third means disqualification. The Rules also recommend that players make a stroke within 40 seconds once they can play without interference or distraction—but that is guidance, not a universal automatic timer. Tournament Committees can set separate pace policies with their own timing procedures and penalties.

What counts as unreasonable delay?

Rule 5.6a prohibits unreasonable delay while playing a hole or between holes. It does not impose one worldwide maximum time for every recreational round. Whether a pause is unreasonable depends on the circumstances; a short delay may be justified by a good reason, such as seeking help from a referee or Committee, or dealing with injury or illness. See the USGA text of Rule 5.

What are the default penalties?

Rule 5.6a breach Penalty
First breach One penalty stroke
Second breach General penalty: two strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play
Third breach Disqualification

If the breach occurs between holes, the penalty applies to the next hole. These are the default penalties for unreasonable delay under Rule 5.6a; a competition’s pace policy may also establish its own procedures and penalties.

How long do you have to hit a shot?

Rule 5.6b recommends that a player make a stroke in no more than 40 seconds after they are, or should be, able to play without interference or distraction. Players should usually be quicker. The 40 seconds is a recommended pace standard, not a universal clock that automatically penalizes every golfer who takes longer. The Rules state that a round is meant to be played at a prompt pace; see the USGA Rule 5 text.

Why do tournament pace rules vary?

A competition Committee may adopt a Local Rule pace-of-play policy. Depending on the event, it may set maximum times for a round, a hole, a series of holes or a stroke; define when a group is out of position; specify when and how players are timed; and explain warnings and penalties. Course characteristics, field size and group size can all affect the pace considered appropriate. The USGA Committee Procedures describe these policy options.

That means Rule 5.6a’s default penalties and an event’s policy-based enforcement are distinct routes. To know the timing limits and procedure that apply, read the policy for the particular course or competition; there is no single event-specific clock or penalty sequence established here.

What does “on the clock” mean?

In a tournament, “on the clock” commonly refers to players being individually timed under the event’s pace policy. The policy determines when timing can begin and how a timed stroke, warning or penalty is handled. There is no single universal procedure: consult that competition’s published policy for its definitions and consequences.

Is ready golf allowed?

In stroke play, players may play out of turn to save time when doing so is safe and responsible. Safety comes first. Match play has a different order-of-play context, so do not assume the stroke-play permission applies identically in every format. The USGA Rule 5 text covers prompt play and playing out of turn.
