Lower a menace before it reaches level 8: use a direct social action if you have an eligible contact, or choose an available storylet, card, or item that reduces the specific menace. The best route depends on your location, story progress, inventory, and whether you can get help. Menaces advance through change points (CP), and level 8 can send your character to a penalty location where escape costs further actions and possibly resources.
What happens when a menace gets too high?
Fallen London has four primary menaces: Wounds, Nightmares, Scandal, and Suspicion. They commonly build alongside Dangerous, Watchful, Persuasive, and Shadowy activities, respectively. At level 8, a menace can send your character away from ordinary play: Wounds to the slow boat, Nightmares to a dream-related location, Scandal to the Tomb-Colonies, or Suspicion to New Newgate Prison. For Nightmares, the exact destination can depend on circumstances such as being at zee, a recurring-dream quality, or having a Memory of Light. The community-maintained Menaces guide describes the level-8 consequences; check the current in-game storylet requirements because mechanics and availability can change.

Choose a recovery route that is actually available
There is no single best action for every character. Before spending actions, check the current storylet or card and weigh:
- Availability: Are you in London or a later-game area, and have you unlocked the relevant content?
- Help: Does the option require an eligible friend, an incoming invitation, or a social request?
- Cost: Will it use an item, currency, or another resource?
- Reliability: Is the reduction immediate, dependent on an opportunity card or chance, or spread across several actions?
- Side effects: Could it raise another menace or change a persistent quality?
If a menace is close to level 8, prioritize an eligible direct reduction over a slow or card-dependent route. Social actions can be effective for all four menaces, but only when you meet their requirements and have someone eligible to interact with. The reductions and prerequisites below are listed in the community-maintained Menaces guide; verify them in game, particularly for event-limited options.

Lower Wounds
Look first for an available social action or a storylet or item that directly reduces Wounds. One more accessible option listed in the guide is Lodgings’ Time in Bed. It requires at least 2 Wounds and can take three actions, so its total convenience is not captured by its reduction per action. Other listed remedies depend on story progress, location, or item access. If Wounds reaches level 8, the character can be sent to the slow boat.
Lower Nightmares
Social help and a letter-based option are among the listed routes. Time in Bed is also listed as a location-specific reduction when Wounds are present. Other possibilities include later-game areas and actions, and consumables such as F.F. Gebrandt’s Superior Laudanum. Some routes are event-limited or require access to later-game locations, so inspect the current option for its prerequisites before committing. At level 8, Nightmares can send the character to a dream-related penalty location; the destination varies with circumstances including zee travel, recurring-dream qualities, or a Memory of Light.

Lower Scandal
Social options include asking someone to help lay rumours to rest and sending a name written in Gant. Solo choices listed by the guide include certain actions and opportunity cards, church services, and Nikolas & Sons Instant Ablution Absolution, which it lists as reducing Scandal by 1 CP. Card availability and storylet prerequisites affect which route you can use. At level 8, Scandal can exile the character to the Tomb-Colonies.

Lower Suspicion
Social assistance and location-based actions are listed recovery options. In Spite, Confound the Constables is listed as reducing 3–4 CP when its Airs and Shadowy requirements are met. Other routes require later-game access or multiple actions. Nikolas & Sons Instant Ablution Absolution can reduce Suspicion only while your Criminal Record is below level 4, according to the guide. An arrest adds a Criminal Record; at level 4, that route no longer reduces Suspicion. Since level-8 Suspicion can lead to New Newgate Prison, check both the action requirements and your Criminal Record before relying on this option.

Equipment helps prevent build-up, not clear a current menace
Menace-affecting equipment changes future menace gain from actions; it does not directly lower a menace you already have. The wiki lists gear intended to reduce build-up for particular menaces, but its equipment section is explicitly incomplete and warns that its formulas may be incorrect. Treat such gear as a possible preventive measure, not a cure, and do not assume a specific outfit will produce an exact reduction.

The detailed route list comes from a community-maintained wiki rather than an official developer help page. Opportunity-card choices, event availability, prerequisites, and mechanics can change. Use the current Menaces guide alongside the in-game storylet or card text, especially when a route consumes an item, takes several actions, or affects a lasting quality.
