In the classic Hal Jordan origin, Abin Sur’s dying ring searches for a successor and selects Hal because of his willpower and ability to face fear. That is the familiar explanation, not a rule shared by every Green Lantern story: some later versions emphasize overcoming fear, while the alternate Earth One continuity says rings do not choose their bearers at all.
Why does Abin Sur’s ring choose Hal Jordan?
Abin Sur is a Green Lantern of the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps. When he is dying, he entrusts his ring and responsibility for his sector to someone who can take his place. DC’s character profile describes the Corps’ rings as powered by the green energy of willpower, and its retrospective on the origin says Hal was chosen for his strong willpower—the quality needed to use the ring.
The origin appears in Showcase #22, Hal Jordan’s debut. DC’s 2024 solicitation for the issue’s facsimile edition describes Abin Sur searching for someone “who is born without fear” and selecting test pilot Hal Jordan. Taken together, the familiar account presents Hal as a worthy successor whose will and fear-facing character suit him to wield the ring.
“Born without fear” is origin-story language, not proof that every Lantern never feels afraid. Later stories explain the virtue more as facing or overcoming fear than as never experiencing it.

Does a Green Lantern ring choose people who are not afraid?
Not as a universal rule. Classic origin material uses the phrase “born without fear,” but later Green Lantern stories make courage about acting despite fear. In a 2016 DC interview, writer Sam Humphries described the ring as choosing someone for “your ability to overcome great fear,” with the person’s life experiences playing an important part. That is a creator’s explanation in an interview, not a mechanical checklist binding every continuity.
DC’s feature on Jessica Cruz similarly connects her courage to living with anxiety and continuing through trauma. Her story shifts the emphasis from being free of fear to confronting it. The point is not that every ring follows an identical test, but that fear and the will to face it have been recurring themes in how Green Lanterns are portrayed.

Was Hal Jordan the only possible choice?
No. DC’s account of the origin identifies Guy Gardner as another person Abin Sur’s ring might have selected. A separate DC feature says Guy nearly inherited the ring, but Hal was closer when Abin Sur needed a successor. In later events, Hal and the Guardians chose Guy as a substitute Lantern; Guy eventually became a full-time Lantern after the Corps accepted that Sector 2814 could have more than one.
So the classic story does not require that Hal be the only person with the necessary qualities. The ring’s choice is tied to suitability, while circumstance—including who is available nearby—also matters in this account.

Do all Green Lantern rings choose their users?
No. The answer depends on the continuity or adaptation. Treat the classic Hal Jordan origin, alternate comics, and animated films as distinct versions rather than combining their rules into one universal explanation.
| Version | How selection works | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Mainline Hal Jordan origin | Abin Sur’s ring seeks a successor and selects Hal. | DC associates Hal’s selection with strong willpower; the Showcase #22 facsimile solicitation describes the search as seeking someone born without fear. |
| Green Lantern: Earth One | Rings do not choose their bearers; anyone who gets a ring can use it. | DC says training and practice affect how well someone uses one in this alternate continuity. |
| Green Lantern: First Flight animated film | The film describes heroes as selected for the strength and will to control their rings. | This is the film’s framing, not a universal rule for the comics. |
DC’s Earth One account makes the contrast explicit: “They don’t choose their bearers.” It describes an alternate continuity in which obtaining a ring, rather than being selected by it, is the starting point; skill improves with training and practice.

What is the simplest accurate explanation?
For the classic Hal Jordan story, Abin Sur’s ring searches for a successor and chooses Hal, with DC emphasizing his willpower and the origin’s language invoking fearlessness. Later stories often recast that quality as the courage to overcome fear. Guy Gardner was another possible candidate, and other continuities can use different rules—including no ring-based selection at all.
For the origin itself, DC identifies Showcase #22 as Hal Jordan’s debut and has promoted a facsimile edition that includes the selection scene.
