The correct method depends on where you bought the game. If you bought an EA game on Steam, install it from your Steam Library and link your EA Account when prompted. If you bought it through the EA app or another retailer, add it to Steam as a non-Steam game shortcut. That shortcut does not transfer ownership, create a Steam license, or unlock Steam achievements.
Choose the right method
| Where you got the game | What to do | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Install it from Library | A genuine Steam library entry and Steam license |
| EA app | Add the installed game as a non-Steam game | A Steam shortcut that launches the EA version |
| Retailer key | Redeem it on the platform named by the key | A Steam license only if it is specifically a Steam key |
| Physical PC copy | Install through its supported launcher, then add a shortcut if needed | A shortcut, not necessarily Steam ownership |
| EA Play | Install through the platform where the membership applies | Subscription-based access under that platform’s rules |
Steam’s Add a Non-Steam Game feature is a convenience shortcut. It is not a way to register an EA purchase with Steam.

If you bought the EA game on Steam
Do not add it manually as a non-Steam game. Use Steam’s normal installation process:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
- Select the EA game and click Install.
- Allow Steam to install any required components.
- Launch the game.
- When prompted, install or open the EA app.
- Sign in to the EA Account you want associated with Steam.
- Authorize the connection and relaunch the game if requested.
Many EA games purchased through Steam require the EA app, although requirements vary by title. EA says Steam and EA accounts generally need to be linked the first time an eligible game is played. Check the individual Steam store page and the game’s EA support information for title-specific requirements.

Be careful when choosing the EA Account
Before approving the link, make sure you are signed in to the correct EA Account. Check EA Account settings → Connected Accounts → Steam if you need to confirm the connection. EA’s Steam guidance says some unlinking and relinking scenarios are restricted, including a stated 12-month limitation when changing the linked Steam account. Do not repeatedly unlink accounts as a troubleshooting experiment.
If you bought the game through the EA app
You can place it in Steam as a shortcut:
- Install the game in the EA app and confirm that it launches there.
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Click + ADD A GAME… in the lower-left corner.
- Choose Add a Non-Steam Game….
- Select the game’s executable, or click Browse… to locate it manually.
- Click Add Selected Programs.
- Start the game from the new Steam library entry.
Menu labels can vary slightly between Steam desktop-client versions, but the documented route remains + ADD A GAME… → Add a Non-Steam Game….
Which executable should you add?
There is no universal installation path for EA games. The location depends on your drive, EA app settings, game, and whether the title uses a separate launcher.
Use the game’s own executable as the first choice when it launches correctly without the EA app being selected separately. If direct launching fails, add the EA app or the game’s launcher executable instead so it can authenticate, update, and start the title.
To find the correct file:
- Check the game’s installation location in the EA app’s management or installation options.
- Use File Explorer or Windows Search to look for the game’s
.exefile. - Prefer the actual game executable over an installer, updater, crash reporter, or desktop shortcut file.
- After a game update or move to another drive, check that the shortcut’s target still exists.
To correct an entry, right-click it in Steam, choose Properties, and review the shortcut’s target and Start In folder. If the game executable does not work, test the EA app executable; if the EA launcher does not behave correctly, test the game executable instead.
If you have an EA or retailer product key
Only activate a key in Steam if the key was issued for Steam. In the Steam client, select + ADD A GAME… → Activate a Product on Steam…, then enter the key.

A key intended for the EA app or another platform will not become a Steam license through this process and may produce an invalid-product-code error. For a non-Steam key, redeem it according to the retailer’s instructions, install the game through its supported launcher, and then add a non-Steam shortcut if desired. Steam explains the distinction in its guidance on retail CD keys.
Can an EA purchase be transferred to Steam?
Generally, no. Adding an EA-app game to Steam does not transfer the purchase or convert it into a Steam edition. EA’s support guidance distinguishes between playing an EA title purchased on Steam and adding games to the EA app library; it also states that a game purchased through the EA app cannot be transferred to Steam.
A shortcut therefore does not provide:
- Steam ownership or a Steam license
- Steam achievements or trading cards
- Steam Cloud for the EA purchase
- Steam Workshop support
- Steam refunds or Steam customer support for the transaction
- A Steam-based multiplayer entitlement
If Steam-native ownership and features are important, you generally need to purchase the Steam edition separately, if one exists. That Steam edition may still require the EA app and EA Account linking.
What works after adding a non-Steam shortcut?
| Feature | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Library organization | Usually available, including categories and custom artwork. |
| Launching through Steam | Usually available, provided the shortcut targets the correct launcher or executable. |
| Controller configuration | May work through Steam Input, but compatibility varies by game and launcher. |
| Steam Overlay | Conditional. Independent launchers, administrator requirements, anti-cheat, or the game itself may prevent it. |
| Achievements, Cloud, Workshop and trading cards | Do not assume these are available for a non-Steam shortcut. |
| Playtime tracking | May be incomplete or inaccurate, especially when another launcher starts the game. |
| Refunds and purchase support | Handled by EA or the original retailer, not Steam. |
Steam notes that functionality for non-Steam games can vary substantially. Its non-Steam game and controller guidance is the better reference when a specific overlay or controller feature fails.

Steam opens the EA app, but the game does nothing
Try this recovery sequence:
- Launch the game directly from the EA app.
- Confirm that it runs outside Steam.
- Close Steam and the EA app completely.
- Reopen the EA app, sign in, and try again.
- Edit the Steam shortcut or add the game again.
- Try the game executable instead of the EA app executable, or vice versa.
- Confirm that the target file still exists after a game update.
- Check the game-specific EA support page if the launch still fails.
Other causes can include antivirus or firewall interference, administrator-permission mismatches, anti-cheat restrictions, or conflicts between Steam and third-party overlays.

The game is missing from the EA app library
First confirm that you are signed in to the EA Account used for the purchase. Then check order history, product-code redemption, subscription status, and whether you bought DLC rather than the base game. EA’s missing-games guidance also recommends restarting the app, signing out and back in, clearing the EA app cache, or reinstalling the app when appropriate.
The shortcut disappeared or stopped working after an update
The game may have moved, or its launcher executable may have been replaced. Open the shortcut’s Steam Properties, correct the target and Start In folder, or add the updated executable again.
The Steam Overlay does not work
This is a compatibility issue rather than proof that the shortcut was created incorrectly. Try launching Steam before the EA app and disabling conflicting overlays, but accept that some games and anti-cheat systems do not support the Steam Overlay when launched through an external platform.

- Try adding the game executable rather than the EA launcher.

EA app, Steam, or EA Play?
The EA app is EA’s current PC launcher and storefront. Older instructions may refer to Origin, but Origin has been replaced for current PC use; eligible Origin purchases are accessed through the EA app with the same account.
Use Steam as a shortcut and library-management layer if convenience is your priority. Keep the game entirely in the EA app if that produces the most reliable launch and support path. Consider buying the Steam edition only if you specifically want Steam-native ownership or features and accept that it may still use the EA app.
EA Play is a separate subscription option. Access depends on where the membership is purchased and used, so it should not be treated as a way to create permanent Steam ownership. Check EA’s official page for current plans and availability.
