To let your child add friends on Xbox, use the Xbox Family Settings app: choose your child under Your Family, then go to Social > Manage online communications > Add Friends and select Allow. This permits friend additions without parent approval. You can keep friend requests subject to review instead; the app supports approving or declining requests and viewing your child’s friends list.
Turn on Add Friends in the Xbox Family Settings app
- Open the Xbox Family Settings app and sign in with the parent or family organizer account.
- Under Your Family, select your child’s profile.
- Open the settings icon beside the child’s name.
- Under Social, open Manage online communications and find Add Friends.
- Select Allow to let your child add friends without approval. To review requests instead, leave approval enabled and use the app to approve or decline requests.
The route and control are described by the ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guide and Xbox Support. App labels can change, so if they differ, look for the child’s social or online communication settings. The available guidance does not establish a reliable current console-by-console menu route.
Choose friend requests, communication, and multiplayer separately
Allowing a child to add friends does not automatically allow every kind of interaction. Xbox lists friend additions, online communication, and multiplayer as separate parental controls. You can decide independently whether the child may add friends, who may communicate with them, and whether they may join multiplayer games. Xbox’s Family hub also lists controls for clubs and broadcasting.
- Add Friends: Allow friend additions without approval, or retain parent review.
- Communication: Choose who can communicate with the child; a Friends Only option is available in Xbox’s communication controls.
- Multiplayer: Set separately whether the child can join multiplayer games.
For example, you can allow friend additions while limiting communication to friends. Xbox Wire’s 2020 announcement of Family Settings app features describes friend-request review and communication choices. Because that announcement is historical, it documents those capabilities but does not guarantee that today’s interface labels are unchanged.

If your child plays Minecraft or uses another device
Minecraft Help says Xbox Family Settings can manage child-account social features for Minecraft even when it is played somewhere other than an Xbox console. Its listed controls include adding friends, following others, and managing who can communicate through chat. The app route is to sign in with the parent account, select the child, open the settings cogwheel, and adjust the relevant social setting.
This guidance establishes how Xbox family controls apply to Minecraft; it does not establish identical behavior for every game. If a game still blocks friend features after you allow additions, check that game’s own requirements and the child account’s communication and multiplayer permissions.
