To connect to a Counter-Strike 1.6 server by IP address, open the game’s developer console and enter connect <server-IP>:<port>, using the full address and port supplied by the server operator. Press Enter to join. For a server you visit often, add its address to Favorites in the server browser instead.
How do I connect to Counter-Strike 1.6 by IP address?
- Get the server’s complete IP address or hostname and port from the operator or server listing. Use the supplied port; do not assume it is the default.
- Launch Counter-Strike 1.6 and open the developer console. If the console does not open, enable it in the game’s settings. A dependable keyboard shortcut is not established across installations.
- Type
connect <IP>:<port>and press Enter. For example,connect 192.0.2.10:27015shows the format only; it is not a real server recommendation. The CS 1.6-specific guide documents console direct-connect.
Keep the colon between the address and port. Steam lists UDP port 27015 as the default for its Half-Life Dedicated Server setup, but server operators can configure a different port. Use the actual address and port they provide (Steam Half-Life Dedicated Server setup; Steam router guide).
How can I save a server to Favorites?
For repeat visits, add the server’s address and port to Favorites in the game or Steam server browser, then connect from the saved entry. The precise labels can vary by client version; the Steam Community guide covers the CS 1.6 workflow, and Steam’s router guide describes adding an internal IP and port through Steam’s Favorites server list.
Which address should I use?
Joining from outside the server’s network
Use the externally reachable address supplied by the server operator. If the server is hosted on a home or local network, the host must configure the network, security software, and game so outside connection requests can reach it. Steam notes that this host-side configuration is necessary for users outside the local network (Hosting a Local (Listen) Server for Valve Games).

Joining from the same router
If your computer and the server are behind the same router, try the server’s internal or local IP address with its port. Steam says a client behind the same router may be unable to connect through the server browser using the external address. Router NAT loopback can also prevent a player inside the host’s network from connecting to the host’s external IP; the CS 1.6 guide flags this limitation.
What to check if the connection fails
- Confirm the address and port are complete and correctly typed, including the colon.
- Ask whether the server is online and whether its port has changed. UDP 27015 is Steam’s documented Half-Life server default, not a universal requirement.
- If you are on the host’s local network, try the internal IP rather than the external IP.
- If you are outside the host’s network, the host may need to configure port forwarding, security software, and the game. Players joining a working public server do not normally configure the server host’s router.
- If the host uses a dynamic public IP, it may change after a modem restart or power cycle. Steam’s router guide notes this possibility; ask the operator to confirm the current address.
Connecting to a server is different from hosting one
A player joining an existing server generally needs only its address and port. Hosting is a separate setup task: Steam identifies Counter-Strike as a GoldSrc game that can use a Half-Life Dedicated Server, and distinguishes in-game listen servers, Steam dedicated servers, and stand-alone dedicated servers (Steam Half-Life Dedicated Server setup; Steam listen-server support; Steam server guide). The documented dedicated-server setup interface has a maximum-player setting range of 1–32; that is a setting range for that interface, not a population limit for every community server.

Steam’s update archive lists a Counter-Strike update on December 12, 2023, that included a fix for joining games through invites and the Steam friends list. That update is separate from entering an IP address directly (Counter-Strike update archive).
