The most reliable way to download an Xbox screenshot or game clip is to open the Captures app on your Xbox, upload the file to OneDrive, and then download it to your phone, Windows PC, or Mac. You can also copy captures to compatible external storage.
Act quickly with important clips: captures stored on the Xbox network may be automatically deleted after 90 days. That deadline does not automatically apply to copies saved in OneDrive, on your console, or on external storage. Xbox announced the 90-day Xbox-network retention policy.

What counts as an Xbox capture?
An Xbox capture can be a screenshot or a recorded game clip. It may exist in several different places:

- On the Xbox network: uploaded to Xbox’s online capture service and subject to the 90-day deletion policy.
- In OneDrive: a separate cloud copy uploaded from the Captures app.
- On external storage: a copy transferred to a compatible USB drive.
These are not interchangeable locations. Uploading a file to OneDrive is a backup operation, not a guarantee that the Xbox-network copy will remain available forever.

Download Xbox captures to a Windows PC, Mac, iPhone, or Android phone
Use the console-to-OneDrive method when you want the most dependable cross-device transfer.
1. Upload the capture from your Xbox
- Sign in to the Xbox console with the Microsoft account associated with the capture.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open My games & apps.
- Select See all.
- Open Apps, then launch Captures.
- Select the screenshot or game clip.
- Choose Upload to OneDrive.
The exact selection and bulk-management controls can vary with console software. To back up many files, use the Captures app’s multi-select or bulk-upload controls if they appear. Otherwise, upload the files in smaller batches.
For a large video, leave the console connected to the internet until the upload finishes. A file that appears in the console’s list is not necessarily fully backed up yet.

2. Download it from OneDrive
- Windows PC: open OneDrive in a browser, or find the file in the synced OneDrive folder and copy it to a normal local folder.
- Mac: use OneDrive.com or the OneDrive Mac app, then download or copy the file locally. You do not need the Xbox app for this method.
- iPhone or Android: open the OneDrive app, find the capture, and use the app’s Save, Download, or offline-availability option. Export the result to Photos or Files, depending on the phone and app version.
In OneDrive on the web, select one or more files and choose Download. Multiple selected files may be downloaded as a ZIP archive. Microsoft documents this behavior in its OneDrive download instructions.
Where are Xbox captures stored in OneDrive?
Xbox uploads captures to an Xbox-related location in OneDrive. Folder labels can vary between Microsoft services and versions. Look in the Videos folder, including a folder named Xbox Game DVR if it exists, or search OneDrive by the capture’s file name.
If nothing appears, first confirm that OneDrive is signed in to the same Microsoft account used on Xbox. A different account is one of the most common reasons an upload appears to be missing.

Copy Xbox captures to a USB or external drive
External storage is useful for large clip libraries, offline archiving, or users who do not want to use cloud storage.
- Connect a compatible USB storage device to the Xbox.
- Open My games & apps → See all → Apps → Captures.
- Select the capture or captures.
- Choose the option to copy or move them to external storage.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then safely remove the drive.
- Connect the drive to your PC or Mac and copy the files to local storage.
The precise prompt depends on the console, drive, formatting, and how the device has been configured. Not every USB device will behave identically. A drive configured for Xbox games and apps may not function like a standard media-transfer drive, so read the console’s prompt before accepting a format or storage configuration that could change how the drive is used.

Can I download captures from the Xbox app or Xbox.com?
Sometimes, but do not rely on this as the main method. Older guides often describe download controls on Xbox.com or in the Windows Xbox app. The current experience is not consistent across the web, Windows, iOS, and Android.
The current Windows Xbox app may not expose every capture stored on the Xbox network, and mobile capture features can vary by operating system and app release. Microsoft support discussions describe these differences, so the safest workflow remains Xbox Captures → OneDrive → your device. - In Captures, check On this Xbox console.
- Check On the Xbox network.
- Search OneDrive, especially Videos and any Xbox Game DVR folder.
- Look for an Expiring soon view or warning indicator in the Captures app, if your console shows one.
- Confirm that Xbox and OneDrive use the same Microsoft account.
- Check whether the OneDrive upload completed before the console was turned off.
- Check available OneDrive storage.
- If the file was uploaded and later deleted, check the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
- Check the original console or attached storage if the capture was never uploaded.
If an Xbox-network capture has expired and no copy exists on the console, OneDrive, or external storage, recovery may not be possible. Microsoft support guidance says captures that were not uploaded to the Xbox network remain on the console where they were recorded; that is not a substitute for making a deliberate backup.
What if the OneDrive upload fails?
Common causes include insufficient OneDrive capacity, an interrupted connection, a large clip still processing, the wrong Microsoft account, temporary service problems, or an upload batch that is too large.
- Upload one small screenshot first.
- Confirm that it appears in OneDrive.
- Upload video clips individually or in smaller batches.
- Free OneDrive space if necessary.
- Try again after confirming the network connection.
- Use external storage if cloud uploads continue to fail.
Uploading to OneDrive normally adds another copy; it does not automatically mean the console or Xbox-network original has been deleted. Microsoft support guidance explains the distinction between uploading and deleting captures: OneDrive upload guidance.
What if the downloaded clip will not play?
- Wait for the OneDrive upload and video processing to finish.
- Download the original file instead of relying on the browser preview.
- Check that the file size and extension look normal.
- Download it again if the file appears incomplete.
- Open it with a current media player.
- Only begin editing after you have a complete local copy.
For editing, Microsoft identifies Clipchamp as an option for captures saved to OneDrive. An editor cannot repair a download that was interrupted or never finished processing.
How to keep Xbox captures from disappearing
Do not treat the Xbox network as your only archive. For valuable screenshots and clips:
- Upload them to OneDrive from the Captures app.
- Download a second copy to your phone or computer.
- Keep especially important videos on external storage.
- Verify that the file opens locally before deleting anything.
- Monitor OneDrive capacity and keep the account active.
The practical long-term workflow is therefore: save the capture from Xbox to OneDrive or an external drive, then create a local copy on the device where you intend to keep or edit it.
