Before doing that, test the game with Mods disabled and exit without saving. Loading and saving a household while Custom Content is missing can remove that content from the saved game. EA’s update guidance recommends checking Mod compatibility before restoring files.

Why The Sims 4 disables Mods after an update
The Sims 4 may disable Mods and Custom Content after a game update as a safety measure. A patch can change game files that Mods depend on, so an older Mod may cause crashes, error messages, missing features, or unexpected gameplay.

This does not necessarily mean the update deleted your Mods. The files may still be in your user Mods folder; the game’s settings may simply have been reset. Turning the settings back on also does not guarantee that every installed Mod is compatible with the new patch.

Before re-enabling Mods: test without saving
- Start The Sims 4 with Mods disabled.
- Load a household and enter Live Mode to check whether the unmodded game behaves normally.
- Exit through Menu → Exit Game.
- If the game offers Save and Exit, do not choose it. Exit without saving.
- Check each Mod creator’s official page or compatibility notes for an update matching your current game version.
If a household looks different or CC items are missing, do not save that state. Restore compatible files first, then relaunch the game.
How to turn Mods back on
- Launch The Sims 4.
- From the main menu, select Game Options.
- Open the Other tab.
- Check Enable Custom Content and Mods.
- If you use gameplay Mods that contain scripts, also check Script Mods Allowed.
- Select Apply Changes and confirm the warning if one appears.
- Fully exit the game.
- Launch The Sims 4 again.
The restart is required after changing these settings. After relaunching, the game should display a list of installed Mods or Custom Content when the relevant options are active. Check the list, then test a household before creating or overwriting a save.
Custom Content, gameplay Mods, and script Mods
- Custom Content (CC): Player-created clothing, hair, furniture, objects, and similar additions.
- Gameplay Mods: Player-created changes or additions to game functionality.
- Script Mods: Mods that use script code and generally require the separate Script Mods Allowed option.
EA uses “Mods” broadly for both Custom Content and gameplay changes. If clothing or furniture is missing, the general Custom Content setting may be disabled. If a script-based gameplay Mod is missing, both settings may need to be enabled.

Check the Mods folder and file types
For a manual installation, the default user-folder structure is generally:
Electronic Arts
└── The Sims 4
└── ModsThe exact location can vary by operating system, user account, or folder setup. Use the Electronic Arts → The Sims 4 → Mods hierarchy rather than assuming one universal absolute path.
Download archives must be extracted before installation. Place the actual Mod files in the Mods folder, not the original .zip or .rar file. Common file types include .package and .ts4script. EA’s installation guide covers the folder and extraction requirements.

For script Mods, an EA community guide recommends keeping the .ts4script file in the Mods folder or no more than one subfolder deep. A script file buried in several nested folders may not load.
Mods are enabled, but the content still does not appear
Work through this checklist:
- Restart the game: Applying the option without fully exiting and relaunching is not enough.
- Check both settings: Script-based Mods need Script Mods Allowed as well as Custom Content.
- Verify the location: Make sure the files are in the active user Mods folder, not the game-installation folder or a duplicate Electronic Arts folder.
- Extract the download: The game cannot use a Mod that remains inside a
.zipor.rararchive. - Check compatibility: Compare the game version shown in the lower-left corner of the main menu with the creator’s current compatibility information.
- Remove duplicates: Delete or move older versions after backing them up.
- Check folder depth: Keep script files in the Mods folder or a shallow subfolder.
- Test a small group: A single outdated or conflicting file can prevent other content from working correctly.
Do not permanently delete files while diagnosing the problem. Move them to a backup folder outside the active Mods folder so you can restore them if necessary.
How to find a broken or outdated Mod
- Close the game.
- Move all Mods out of the active Mods folder, keeping a backup copy elsewhere.
- Start the game and test it without Mods.
- Return Mods in small groups, restarting and testing after each group.
- When the problem returns, divide that group again until you identify the likely file.
- Check the creator’s update notes and replace or remove the incompatible version.
This staged “50/50” approach is a practical community troubleshooting method, not a guarantee that only one file is responsible. Mods can conflict with one another, and a creator may not yet have confirmed compatibility. EA recommends removing problematic Mods and checking the creator’s site for an updated version.

Error codes that can involve script Mods
EA lists error codes 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 as errors that can be associated with script problems where a script Mod may be involved. These codes do not prove that a particular Mod caused the issue. Test without Mods first, then isolate files before assigning blame.

Check whether the game was patched again and repeat the setting-and-restart procedure. If the option will not stay enabled, troubleshooting guidance from EA community and CurseForge support also points to possible interference from antivirus or security software, cloud-sync tools, or problems writing the game’s configuration files.
OneDrive or another sync service can interfere with the user folder or Mods folder. Make sure the game is using the folder you are checking, and avoid allowing multiple synced copies of The Sims 4 user data to compete. Change security settings only with care, and keep the game and user folders protected where possible.

PC and Mac only
Downloaded Mods and Custom Content are available on the PC and Mac versions of The Sims 4. PlayStation and Xbox versions do not support them, so console players will not find a Mods setting or usable Mods folder. EA confirms the platform limitation.
Download Mods carefully
Use a creator’s official page or a reputable Mod platform, avoid suspicious executable files, and scan downloads with security software. EA does not pre-screen, endorse, or provide support for specific third-party Mods or Custom Content. Platforms such as CurseForge can help organize downloads, but they cannot make an outdated Mod compatible with a new patch; you still need to check the individual creator’s updates.
