All standard Nintendo 3DS-family systems are region-locked. To check whether a particular game will work, compare the game’s intended region with the console’s original market: Nintendo 3DS and DSi software must match the system’s region. Nintendo does not document a definitive Settings-menu or serial-number check for identifying an individual console’s original region, so the country where you live now is not enough to establish it.
Which Nintendo 3DS systems are region-locked?
Nintendo says the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL and New Nintendo 2DS XL are region-locked. Nintendo gives parental controls and region-specific system and menu updates as reasons for the restriction. Europe is treated as one region. Nintendo’s support answer

How can I identify my console’s region?
First, identify the exact model; all the standard models listed above are region-locked. Then look for reliable evidence of the market for which that specific unit was originally sold. The reviewed Nintendo guidance does not provide an official Settings-menu path, serial-number decoder or label rule that conclusively reveals a console’s factory region. A console’s current country or language setting alone does not establish its original market.
How do I check whether a game matches?
- Check the game packaging. Look for its compatibility wording and the intended market or region.
- Inspect the cartridge label. For an Americas-market 3DS game, Nintendo’s example uses a title code ending in “USA.” Nintendo says a code without that suffix indicates a game intended for an overseas market; this is guidance for identifying games not produced for the Americas, not a universal decoder for all regions. - Compare the game’s region with the console’s original market. Nintendo UK says a PAL-region 3DS plays software from the PAL region. Nintendo UK’s PAL compatibility answer
What does the region lock apply to?
Nintendo’s 3DS operations manual says that Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DSi software must match the system’s region; software from another region may not function. The manual separately lists Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi and DSi-enhanced software as usable on a 3DS, so do not assume that the 3DS software region rule applies identically to every original DS game. What counts as the same region?
Regional groupings can cover multiple countries. For compatibility purposes, Nintendo treats systems and games distributed throughout the Americas as the same region: its examples say games bought in the United States work on systems bought in Mexico, Brazil or Chile, and vice versa. Americas packaging uses the wording “Plays on Nintendo 3DS systems sold for the Americas only.” That market-specific packaging rule should not be used as a universal label guide for other regions.
