Start with the Steam download region where you are, or the nearest available region. If downloads are slow or Steam reports a server problem, test nearby regions one at a time and keep the one that performs more reliably on your connection. Steam does not identify a universally fastest region: its client attempts to choose a content server based on your location, while routes and server conditions can vary.
How to test which download region works best
- Check your current setting and limit. In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads. Note the selected Download region and whether a download speed limit is enabled.
- Start local. Choose the region where you are, or the nearest available option. Steam Support recommends checking this setting and trying nearby regions if needed: Slow Downloads and Connection to Content Servers.
- Test nearby alternatives one at a time. If the download is slow, change to a different nearby region, then compare. If Steam says a server is “currently unavailable” or “too busy,” Steam’s advice is to try a different but relatively close region and retry the installation or launch: Steam Servers Are Currently Unavailable or Too Busy.
- Make the comparison fair. Compare the same download under similar conditions. A brief speed spike or dip is not enough to establish that one region is better; look for a consistent difference.
- Keep the better result. If another nearby region gives you a more reliable result, use it. If results are similar or worse, return to your local or nearest region.
Check the speed reading before blaming the region
Steam may show download speed in bytes per second, while internet plans are often advertised in bits per second. Those units are not interchangeable: Steam gives the example that 768 KB/s equals 6 Mbps. Check the units when comparing Steam’s display with your plan’s advertised speed. Steam also provides an optional download speed limit; make sure it is not restricting the client. See Steam Support’s download troubleshooting guidance and Setting Client Rates (Limit Download Speed) in Steam.
What if changing regions makes no difference?
Region choice is only one possible cause of a slow download or content-server connection. If nearby alternatives perform alike, check the client limit and displayed units, then consider whether your general network connection or security and packet-filtering software may be affecting the connection. Steam lists these among other avenues to investigate in its content-server troubleshooting advice.
Can Steam’s download statistics tell you the best region?
Steam’s Download Stats page provides aggregate views of recent traffic and ISP performance. That information can offer context, but it does not predict which route will be fastest for your particular connection; use your own comparable download results to choose.

Download region is not Store country or matchmaking region
The setting discussed here is the Steam client’s content download region. It is not the same thing as your Steam Store country or a game’s matchmaking region. Changing it is a troubleshooting choice for downloads and content-server availability, not a way to select where a game matches you.
