NHL teams do not follow one league-wide goalie rotation. The head coach chooses the starter, usually with input from the goalie coach, and weighs rest, workload, health, the schedule, the opponent, each goalie’s readiness, and how strong the tandem is. Teams commonly split back-to-backs, but neither the order nor the frequency of starts is fixed.
Who decides which goalie starts?
The head coach makes the starting-goalie decision; the goalie coach contributes specialized advice on preparation, development, and the goalies’ needs. NHL rules address matters such as submitting eligible players after warmups, but do not prescribe a rotation or publish a formula for choosing a starter.
That means a team’s choices are best understood as case-by-case coaching decisions, not as a standard schedule shared across the league. The factors below are common considerations, not a checklist every club applies identically.
Why do teams rotate goalies?
Back-to-back games
When a team plays on consecutive nights, using both goalies is a common way to manage rest. Seattle’s explanation of the practice notes that which goalie starts first can depend on the opponent and how long each goalie has rested. A coach may still choose the same goalie for both games if the team believes that is the better option for the second night.

One historical estimate needs careful context: the Kraken reported that an Eric Tulsky analysis from 2013 found a just-over-11-percent reduction in save percentage when a goalie played both nights of a back-to-back. The same article said later analyses by SportsMEDIA Technology’s Andrew Thomas and The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn found the effect might be less significant. The estimate is not a current league consensus or a rule for how teams should schedule starts. The article’s illustration used an average of 31.5 shots and 28.4 saves per goalie across 1,019 NHL games through January 2 of the season discussed; those figures are historical sample data, not current league averages. Recovery beyond the game schedule
Workload management can include practice and travel, not just the number of games a goalie has played. NHL.com has described teams adjusting goalie practice, including having a starter work with the goalie coach before leaving the ice ahead of higher-volume team drills. Clubs with an extra goalie may also have more options to cover practice work while limiting unnecessary saves or butterfly drops for a starter.

Some teams have used a third goalie to let a planned starter skip dressing entirely on selected nights. That can avoid the physical and mental demands of warming up and remaining available as the backup; in some cases, it has also helped a goalie avoid travel between cities before a planned start. These are reported approaches, not permanent policies for every club. NHL.com on goalie workload management
The strength of the tandem
Sharing starts is easier when a team considers its two goalies relatively close in ability. A club with a clear top goalie may lean more heavily on that player, while still accounting for recovery and the schedule. “Starter” and “backup” describe roles, but do not by themselves tell you who will start a particular game.

There is no established universal rule that a goalie automatically starts again after a win or loses the job after one poor outing. Recent performance can inform a coach’s judgment, but the reviewed reporting does not support treating either shortcut as an NHL-wide policy. Seattle Kraken’s explanation of goalie tandems
Keeping the backup game-ready
A goalie who goes a long time between starts can have a harder time maintaining timing and confidence. Goalie coaches can help backups stay prepared by balancing team practice duties with drills that recreate game-like timing. Coaches therefore weigh not only the starter’s workload but also whether the other goalie is ready for the assignment.

As Winnipeg goalie Eric Comrie put it, “The hardest part is definitely finding that game rhythm.” His comment reflects a challenge for backups, not a fixed schedule or a guarantee that every team will rotate more often. NHL.com on the backup-goalie role
Availability and health
Injuries, return-to-play status, and roster decisions can override a team’s intended rotation. A planned starter can only take the net if available, and a coach may need to adjust the plan as circumstances change.

What changes when a team carries three goalies?
A three-goalie setup can create roster flexibility and make it possible to give a planned starter a full night away from the rink. It also makes it harder to keep every goalie sharp if appearances are spread among three. In NHL.com’s account of New Jersey’s 2025 training-camp experiment, San Jose director of goaltending Evgeni Nabokov described the risk: “One goalie can get hot, while the other two get rusty.” That is one reported view of the trade-off, not a verdict on every three-goalie arrangement. How to compare two goalies for a specific start
When trying to understand a particular decision, look at the situation around the game rather than assuming a fixed rotation:
- Rest and recent workload: Consider days since the last start, consecutive-game scheduling, a recent run of starts, and practice demands.
- Availability: Check for injury or return-to-play factors that could change the options.
- Relative ability and role: A clear No. 1 may receive more starts than two goalies in a balanced tandem.
- Opponent and schedule: In a back-to-back, the matchup and each goalie’s rest can influence the order.
- Game readiness: A backup may benefit from a start and game-like practice to preserve timing and confidence.
- Travel and recovery: Travel plans can be part of workload management, including whether a planned starter needs to make a late trip.
Is there a set number of games an NHL starter plays?
No universal start threshold is established here. Teams monitor workload, but the available reporting does not identify a league-wide number of starts, shots, or practice repetitions that automatically triggers a rest day. Nor does it establish a current league-wide split between starters and backups. Individual team examples should not be treated as a league average.
In practical terms, an “1A/1B” tandem usually means a team is willing to share starts between two goalies rather than rely on a sharply defined starter-backup hierarchy. The label does not guarantee an even split: schedule, health, performance, and the coaches’ assessment can all shape who plays.
