On a Minecraft dedicated server, “admin” usually means operator (op). If you control the server, grant yourself operator status through its console or an authorized hosting panel. If you are only a player on someone else’s server, you cannot promote yourself; the owner or an existing authorized operator must do it.
Make yourself an operator on a server you control
Use the method that matches your edition and the access you have. The server console is the most direct route for an owner; an in-game command works only when issued by someone who already has sufficient permission.

Java Edition dedicated server
- Open the server console. For a hosted server, sign in to the provider’s panel and open its console or operator-management page if your account is allowed to do so.
- Enter
op YourPlayerName, replacingYourPlayerNamewith the exact Minecraft player name. An already-authorized operator can instead enter/op YourPlayerNamein game. - Look for the server’s confirmation that the player was opped, then reconnect or retry the command that required operator access.
Java records operator status in ops.json. PaperMC advises managing operators with /op and /deop rather than editing that file directly; see PaperMC’s vanilla data files documentation.
If operator access works but does not provide the expected command permissions, ask the owner to check op-permission-level in server.properties. PaperMC documents levels 0 through 4 and identifies the setting as the default permission level for operators added with /op: PaperMC’s server.properties reference. Permission plugins or other server rules may also affect what a player can do.

Bedrock Dedicated Server
In the running server console, enter op YourPlayerName. Microsoft’s Bedrock /op command reference describes it as granting operator status; the command requires Admin permission but does not require cheats. Where the command is entered with slash-command syntax, use /op <player>.
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server guide also covers granting and revoking operator status from the console. Bedrock server permissions are represented in permissions.json; follow the Bedrock server’s supported commands and procedures rather than applying Java’s ops.json instructions.

If you do not control the server
You cannot grant yourself operator status from ordinary player chat. Ask the server owner or an administrator to run the appropriate op command or use an authorized hosting-panel control. Minecraft’s guide to using commands explains that multiplayer commands require a sufficiently high permission level and advises players on someone else’s server to ask for help.
A hosting provider may offer a console or an operator-management page, but its location and capabilities depend on the provider and your account role. Access to the panel is not automatic just because you play on the server.

Single-player and LAN worlds are different
A local world is not necessarily a dedicated server, so its command controls differ from operator status. Minecraft’s command guide explains that Java single-player worlds have an Allow Commands option, while Bedrock single-player worlds use Allow Cheats. In Bedrock, enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, even if you later turn cheats off. For LAN play, the host can configure command access for players joining the world.

- “You do not have permission” or similar: The account issuing the command lacks authority. Use the server console or ask the owner; repeating the command in ordinary player chat will not grant access.
- The command targets the wrong player: Verify the exact player name and the account or edition being used, then have an authorized console operator run the command again.
- You are opped, but a command is still unavailable: On Java, ask the owner to check
op-permission-leveland any installed permission plugins or server rules. Plugin behavior is server-specific. - You granted op to the wrong account: An authorized Java console user or operator can run
deop YourPlayerName. Bedrock’s dedicated-server guide documentsdeop playernamefor revoking operator status.
Operator status grants elevated control over a server. Give it only to trusted players, and have the owner revoke it if it was granted to the wrong account.
