Short answer: Roblox’s AI age check does work for some users, but it is not a reliable proof of identity or exact age. It estimates the apparent age of the face in a short selfie video, then places the account into an age group that can control access to chat and other communication features.
The documented problems are more serious than a failed selfie. Users can receive an incorrect age category, fail to receive an estimate at all, or accidentally attach a parent’s adult result to a child’s account. Roblox’s reported average error does not show how often those failures cross an important boundary such as under 13 versus 13–17. The result is a system that may be useful as one safety signal, but should not be treated as definitive age verification.
What Roblox is actually checking
Roblox uses two different concepts that are often blurred together:
- Facial age estimation: a selfie-style video is analyzed for facial features and an apparent age range.
- ID verification: a separate process uses an eligible government document to verify age more directly.
- Parental controls: a linked parent account may provide an alternative correction or management route, depending on the account and country.
- Account birthday: the date entered when an account was created is not the same as independently verified age.
In the facial-estimation flow, Roblox identifies Persona as its verification provider. The basic process is: the user starts the check, the camera captures a short facial video, Persona processes the facial information, and Roblox assigns an age group or requests another verification method. That category can affect who the user may communicate with.

Roblox says its facial-estimation images and video are deleted immediately after processing and that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from that particular process. However, Roblox’s biometric and facial-media notice and Persona’s privacy policy also describe the processing of facial geometry and related biometric or age-estimation data. The accurate summary is therefore not “Roblox stores every face” or “no biometric data is involved”: facial information is processed, and the companies describe retention and responsibility differently in their policies.
Why “it doesn’t work” is too simple
There are at least four separate claims hidden inside that complaint:
- Technical failure: the camera flow cannot complete or says it cannot estimate age.
- Misclassification: the estimate places someone in the wrong age group.
- Account mismatch: the person scanned is not the person who owns or uses the account.
- Safety failure: passing the check does not prevent harmful behavior, impersonation, grooming, or inappropriate contact.
A system can have a respectable average error while still failing badly at the boundaries that control access. A one- or two-year error may be inconsequential for some users but decisive for someone near 13, 17, or 18. It also does not establish that the face belongs to the account holder.

The evidence of failure
Independent reporting after the rollout described confusion over age categories, parental oversight, and the consequences of incorrect classifications. WIRED reported that users and researchers raised concerns that wrongly categorized accounts could make it harder for parents and moderators to understand who children could contact.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Public support and discussion posts also contain recurring reports of “couldn’t estimate your age” errors, implausible age brackets, parents scanning themselves on children’s accounts, and users being directed through unclear automated support processes. These reports are evidence that particular failure modes occur; they are not a representative survey and cannot establish Roblox’s overall failure rate.
Academic research on facial age-estimation systems has found that appearance changes can shift automated estimates. Studies involving makeup, facial hair, grey hair, simulated wrinkles, and other changes are relevant to the technology’s general limitations, but they are not direct audits of Roblox’s Persona implementation. They should not be treated as proof that a particular trick will bypass Roblox’s system—and this article will not provide bypass instructions.

The parent-scan trap
If a parent scans an adult face while logged into a child’s account, the system may correctly estimate that the face is adult while attaching the result to the child’s account. User reports describe this misunderstanding. The scan is not automatically proof of parental consent; it is a measurement of the face presented to the camera.
What Roblox says about accuracy and safety
Roblox says Persona’s models were tested by third-party laboratories and reports a 1.4-year mean absolute error for users younger than 18. That is an average distance between estimated and actual age in the cited testing. It is not a pass-rate, a guarantee of correct age bands, or an independently reproduced Roblox-wide error rate.

The statistic does not answer several practical questions:
- How often does a user cross a critical age boundary?
- How often does an adult scan on a child’s account?
- How often does an underage user receive an older category?
- How quickly can a legitimate user correct a wrong result?
- How many users abandon chat rather than provide a face scan or ID?
Roblox’s broader argument is that age checks are safer than relying only on a self-entered birthday and can help separate communication groups at platform scale. That may be true in principle. But an age estimate does not verify identity, good intentions, or the safety of a conversation. It is one layer of moderation and access control, not a replacement for parental supervision, reporting, and enforcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens when Roblox cannot estimate your age?
According to Roblox’s age-check guidance, a failed facial estimate may lead to ID verification. The exact option depends on the account, country, age category, previous verification history, and available documents. Roblox says users should submit their own official document where required, and support cannot manually verify IDs or simply remove an existing verification.

If you do not want to provide a face scan or government ID, the practical consequence may be loss of chat or other age-gated communication features. Linked parental controls or disabling communication may be available, but neither option necessarily restores every feature.
What to do if the result is wrong
- Record the result. Save the exact error or age category, the account username, and whether chat alone is affected.
- Check basic camera conditions. Use the supported Roblox app or browser flow, allow camera access, use even front lighting, keep the whole face visible, remove sunglasses or masks, and follow movement prompts.
- Make sure the account holder is being scanned. A parent should not substitute their face for a child’s face.
- Do not assume repeated scans will fix an account-level classification. Retrying may resolve a camera or session problem, but it cannot reliably correct a wrong age result.
- Use the offered official route. If eligible, Roblox may offer ID verification or a linked parental-controls option. Check the current support instructions, because labels and availability can change.
- Contact Roblox Support. Include the device, operating system, Roblox app or browser version, camera used, account and parent-account status, previous verification history, and whether the account holder performed the scan.
Roblox’s age-change guidance makes clear that corrections are not universal. Prior ID verification and account state can limit what can be changed.
The privacy trade-off
Roblox’s January 2026 announcement says age checks are required globally for users in chat-enabled regions before using communication features, although rollout and feature availability can vary. Facial estimation avoids requiring every user to upload a government ID, but it still asks children and families to submit sensitive facial information to an automated process and third-party provider.
That creates a real choice: accept a facial estimate, provide an eligible ID if offered, use available parental controls, or give up some communication features. Families should not be told that a privacy refusal has no consequence, nor that submitting a scan guarantees a correct or permanent result.
So, does Roblox’s AI age verification work?
It works as an imperfect age-grouping tool for many users, but it does not work as definitive proof of a user’s age or identity. The strongest criticism is not that every scan fails. It is that Roblox uses a fallible estimate to control communication, while the most consequential errors involve age boundaries, account binding, privacy, and the difficulty of correcting a bad result.
A credible safety system needs more than a favorable average-error number. It needs transparent boundary-error rates, reliable safeguards against parent-account mistakes, clear data handling, and a fast appeal path that does not force every affected family to surrender more sensitive information.
