How Do I Optimize Windows 11 for Windowed Games?

By VGSources Team 8 min read

For most Windows 11 PCs, start by enabling Optimizations for windowed games, setting your monitor to its highest stable refresh rate, enabling compatible VRR, assigning the game to the correct GPU, and leaving Game Mode on. Treat HAGS, HDR, V-Sync, frame caps, and overlays as per-game tests—not universal performance switches.

These steps are most relevant to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in Windowed or Borderless Windowed mode. They can improve presentation latency and frame pacing, but they do not guarantee higher average FPS.

After optimizing windowed games, Outbyte PC Repair can adjust Windows settings and reduce background system load as an optional step.

1. Enable Optimizations for windowed games

Windows 11’s built-in feature moves compatible applications from the older blt-model presentation path to the newer flip-model path. This can reduce presentation latency and improve access to features such as VRR and Auto HDR on supported displays. It is not a universal FPS boost, and it may not apply to DirectX 9, Vulkan, OpenGL, unusual launchers, or games with incompatible rendering paths.

Microsoft documents the feature here: Optimizations for windowed games.

  3. Under Default settings, turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
  4. Restart the game.

Disable it for one game

Do not disable the feature globally because of one problematic title. In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, choose Options, turn off Optimizations for windowed games, select Save, and restart the game. The same panel can provide per-game Auto HDR and GPU preferences.

Use a per-game override if you encounter flickering, incorrect HDR, black screens, stutter, broken capture, overlay problems, or anti-cheat incompatibility.

2. Choose Borderless Windowed or Exclusive Fullscreen deliberately

Borderless Windowed is usually the practical choice when you frequently Alt-Tab, use multiple monitors, stream, record, or keep chat and guides open. It normally avoids repeated resolution changes and makes switching applications quicker.

It is not always the lowest-latency option. A poorly implemented borderless mode can produce worse frame pacing or VRR behavior, and some games expose additional refresh rates or HDR behavior only in exclusive fullscreen. For competitive games or benchmarking, compare Borderless Windowed with Exclusive Fullscreen using the same resolution, cap, V-Sync state, and graphics settings.

NVIDIA’s FrameView guide explains why fullscreen, windowed, independent-flip, V-Sync, and tearing states can behave differently even at the same FPS.

3. Configure the monitor correctly

Set the refresh rate

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the monitor used for gaming.
  3. Choose its highest stable supported refresh rate.

If Windows is set to 60 Hz while the display supports 120, 144, 165, or 240 Hz, you will not receive the full benefit of the panel.

Enable VRR

Variable refresh rate technologies—including NVIDIA G-SYNC, AMD FreeSync, and VESA DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync—adjust display refresh behavior to match frame delivery. Within a supported operating range, VRR can reduce tearing and make uneven frame delivery appear smoother.

  • Enable Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC in the monitor’s on-screen menu if required.
  • Enable VRR in the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics control panel.
  • Turn on Windows’ Variable refresh rate option if it is available under Graphics settings.
  • Confirm that the game is running on the VRR-enabled monitor.

VRR is not automatically active just because a monitor advertises compatibility. The GPU, driver, connection, game, refresh range, and frame rate all matter. The monitor, graphics card, cable, and port also determine which combinations of resolution, HDR, refresh rate, and VRR are available. Follow the monitor manufacturer’s documented port and cable requirements.

HDR: test it, do not assume it is better

Auto HDR is a visual feature that converts supported SDR games to an HDR presentation; it is not a guaranteed performance improvement. Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance covers Game Mode and Auto HDR.

Results vary. A game may look better, washed out, too bright, too dark, or have incorrect UI colors. Compare Auto HDR with the game’s native HDR implementation and use the Windows HDR calibration tool where available. If Auto HDR is enabled, Microsoft says it must be turned off before Optimizations for windowed games can be disabled.

4. Assign the game to the correct GPU

On a laptop or hybrid system, the launcher and the actual game executable may use different GPUs. Add the game’s real .exe, not only Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or the Xbox app.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Select or add the game executable.
  3. Choose Options.
  4. Select High performance, then save.
  5. Restart the game.

The available choices are Let Windows decide, Power saving, and High performance. High performance generally selects the discrete GPU, but it increases power use, heat, fan noise, and battery drain. Some laptops still route the internal panel through integrated graphics even when the discrete GPU renders the game. An external monitor connected directly to the discrete GPU may behave differently.

Plug a gaming laptop into AC power and use its manufacturer performance mode when available. OEM graphics drivers can also differ from generic vendor packages, so troubleshoot with the laptop manufacturer’s guidance in mind.

5. Keep Game Mode on; test HAGS

Microsoft generally recommends checking that Game Mode is enabled. Go to Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and set Game Mode to On. It is a sensible default, not a guaranteed FPS gain and not a replacement for adequate cooling, drivers, or sensible game settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) moves much of GPU scheduling work from the CPU to dedicated scheduling hardware. Its real-world effect depends on the GPU, driver, CPU workload, game, and Windows build. If games are stable, leaving it enabled is reasonable. If you experience stutter, capture problems, crashes, or inconsistent frame times, test it disabled and compare. Restart Windows if requested.

Change only one setting at a time. Microsoft’s explanation of HAGS and VRR is available in its Graphics settings documentation.

6. Tune the game before chasing Windows tweaks

The largest performance changes usually come from the game’s own settings. A useful order is:

  1. Enable the game’s DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or dynamic-resolution option.
  2. Reduce ray tracing or other heavy lighting effects.
  3. Reduce shadows and volumetric effects.
  4. Lower reflections and view distance.
  5. Keep textures high if VRAM is sufficient; lower them if texture streaming or VRAM exhaustion causes stutter.

Prefer the game’s native upscaler. Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution is not a general Windows 11 feature for ordinary NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel gaming PCs. Current requirements include Windows 11 24H2 or later, supported Copilot+ hardware with a Snapdragon X or X2 processor and NPU—or the stated ROG Xbox Ally X scenario—current drivers, a supported game and API, and supported resolutions generally in the 700p–900p range. DirectX 9, Vulkan, OpenGL, x86-only games, and certain formats are unsupported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

V-Sync and frame caps

V-Sync can remove tearing but may add latency or constrain frame delivery. Disabling it can expose higher measured FPS while producing tearing. With VRR, many players cap FPS slightly below the display’s maximum refresh rate to remain inside the VRR range, but there is no universal “refresh rate minus three” rule that works for every monitor and synchronization setup.

Judge the result using more than average FPS: check input response, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, tearing, and behavior at the edges of the VRR range.

7. Reduce interference without “debloating” Windows

For a clean test, close unnecessary workloads such as video-playing browser tabs, cloud synchronization, downloads, updates, virtual machines, CPU-heavy launchers, RGB utilities, monitoring tools, recording software, and third-party overlays.

Overlays from Xbox Game Bar, Steam, NVIDIA, AMD, Discord, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner Statistics Server, and capture applications can help measure performance, but they can also cause stutter, flicker, incorrect capture colors, input conflicts, crashes, or anti-cheat issues. Disable one overlay at a time, restart the game, and compare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not indiscriminately disable Windows services, Microsoft Defender, driver services, anti-cheat components, security features, or startup items you cannot identify. Registry tweaks, timer-resolution utilities, BCD commands, mitigation changes, and “gaming optimizer” tools are not prerequisites for this setup and can make recovery harder.

8. Measure changes instead of trusting folklore

  1. Choose one repeatable scene or the game’s built-in benchmark.
  2. Record display mode, resolution, refresh rate, VRR, V-Sync, frame cap, graphics settings, Windows build, and driver version.
  3. Change one setting only.
  4. Restart the game, and restart Windows when a system setting requests it.
  5. Run the same test three times under similar temperature and background-load conditions.
  6. Compare average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time graphs, stutter frequency, and subjective input response.
  7. Keep the change only if it improves the problem you are trying to solve.

NVIDIA FrameView can record FPS and percentile results alongside related performance data. A higher average FPS is not necessarily an improvement if frame pacing or latency becomes worse.

9. Troubleshoot common problems

The setting is missing

Windows builds and graphics pages can differ. Search Settings for Graphics, install pending Windows updates, and update the display driver. The documented path is System > Display > Graphics, not the Gaming section.

Useful diagnostics include winver for the Windows build, dxdiag for display adapters and DirectX information, powercfg /getactivescheme for the active power plan, perfmon /rel for failures after an update, and ms-settings:display-graphics to open Graphics settings directly on supported installations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Borderless mode still stutters

Check whether the game is CPU-limited, outside the monitor’s VRR range, conflicting with V-Sync or a frame cap, compiling shaders, streaming assets, using the wrong GPU, or affected by an overlay or driver regression. The Windows optimization may not cover a Vulkan or OpenGL presentation path.

HDR looks wrong

  1. Turn off Auto HDR.
  2. Test the game’s native HDR mode.
  3. Confirm Windows HDR and the monitor HDR mode.
  4. Compare Borderless Windowed with Exclusive Fullscreen.
  5. Disable overlays and capture tools.

The game crashes after a change

  1. Revert the per-game Graphics setting.
  2. Restore the previous in-game display mode.
  3. Disable HDR or Auto HDR and overlays.
  4. Verify the game files in its launcher.
  5. Update or roll back the graphics driver.
  6. Back up the game configuration before resetting it as a last resort.

Alt-Tab still minimizes the game

Borderless Windowed usually helps, but implementation varies. Check the game’s own display-mode setting, multi-monitor configuration, and whether it is actually using exclusive fullscreen despite its label.

Recommended starting presets

Use case Starting configuration
General gaming Borderless Windowed; windowed-game optimizations on; Game Mode on; correct high-performance GPU; highest stable refresh rate; VRR on when supported; test HAGS and Auto HDR per game.
Competitive gaming Compare Borderless and Exclusive Fullscreen; favor consistent latency and frame times; use a stable cap; disable unnecessary overlays; avoid HDR or visual enhancements that reduce clarity.
Laptop gaming Use AC power; select the discrete GPU; enable the manufacturer performance mode; monitor heat and clocks; expect more noise and battery drain.
