You can overclock a Nintendo Switch with the homebrew utility sys-clk, but this is not a setting in the normal system menu: sys-clk’s documented setup assumes a console running Atmosphère. It can apply CPU, GPU, and memory clock settings by game and docked state. There is no universal, source-backed safe preset or guaranteed performance gain, so check your exact console’s compatibility and weigh the risks before changing clocks.
What you need before overclocking
The documented sys-clk method requires a compatible homebrew setup. The project’s installation instructions assume Atmosphère and involve copying files to the console’s microSD card. If you do not already have a compatible setup, do not assume every Switch model or software version can use the same modification route.
Check the current sys-clk project documentation and the NH Switch Guide for compatibility and current instructions that match your console. Compatibility can depend on the hardware model and software versions. The installation instructions identify the SD-card root as the destination for the project’s atmosphere and switch folders. Its overlay also requires Tesla; consult the current project instructions for the relevant files and setup details.
You do not necessarily need to buy a new microSD card. The project requires files on the card, but its documentation does not say that a new card is required or that a particular card improves clock speeds or game performance.

Can you overclock a Switch without homebrew?
Not with the documented sys-clk method. Its setup assumes Atmosphère, so this is a homebrew modification rather than an official Nintendo system-menu option.
Nintendo warns that unauthorized devices, including modchips that bypass console security measures, may leave a console unusable after a network update. That warning does not mean failure is guaranteed, but it is a platform risk to consider before modifying a console. See Nintendo’s information on unauthorized devices. How sys-clk configuration works
Sys-clk can configure CPU, GPU, and memory clocks according to the running title and whether the console is docked. That makes per-game and handheld-versus-docked configuration possible; it does not establish that one set of values works well for every game or Switch revision. The project also provides a manager and an overlay for working with its configuration.
Rather than copying an enthusiast’s clock values, decide what you want to improve and assess each game separately. Consider the console’s operating state, stability, power use and battery runtime, and heat. Change only settings you understand, follow the current project instructions, and check behavior after changes. The available project documentation describes the configuration capability, not a universally safe numerical preset.

Risks and practical limits
The NH Switch Guide cautions that modified versions may risk hardware failure and that overclocking can increase hardware wear. It does not quantify how much lifespan may be affected or provide failure rates by console model. Treat overclocking as a risk-bearing modification, not a guaranteed or harmless way to improve performance.
Nintendo notes that high ambient temperatures can make the console hot, but that general heat guidance does not establish a temperature limit for overclocking. Its advice that leaving a fully charged Switch docked or connected to its AC adapter does not harm the battery concerns charging; it does not show that overclocked operation has no effect on battery runtime or hardware longevity. Do not expect a fixed frame-rate increase, a particular temperature outcome, or a predictable reduction in battery life. Those results are not established by the cited guidance and can vary with hardware, configuration, game, and use.
