What’s actually slowing this PC down?

As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft does not clearly document a generally available consumer feature that lets the Xbox mobile app or Xbox website queue a game directly onto a Windows PC. Xbox supports remote installation to Xbox consoles, but PC games are normally installed through the Xbox app for Windows.
If you are away from home, the practical workaround is to remotely connect to the Windows PC itself and select Install in the Xbox app. That is remote control of your computer—not an Xbox remote-install feature.

Can Xbox remotely install games to a Windows PC?
Not through a clearly documented, generally available Xbox consumer workflow. Microsoft’s official remote-install instructions are for installing games on an Xbox console. Microsoft’s Windows guidance instead directs users to discover and download PC games through the Xbox app for Windows.
App behavior can vary by country, account, title, and rollout. Some users report seeing a remote-download destination for an Xbox console but no Windows PC. If your destination list shows only a console, that is consistent with the documented console-focused feature; it does not necessarily mean you have missed a hidden PC setting.

There are several different things people may mean by “remotely install Xbox games on my PC”:
- Queue a download from a phone: This is not currently clearly documented for a Windows PC.
- Install a PC version: Use the Xbox app on the target PC.
- Install a game on an Xbox console: Xbox supports this separately.
- Play without downloading: Use cloud gaming where the title, plan, device, and region support it.
- Operate the PC from elsewhere: Use a preconfigured remote-access connection, then start the ordinary Xbox app installation yourself.
Install the game normally through the Xbox app
For a local PC installation, you need a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, the Xbox app, the correct Microsoft account, a compatible game entitlement, and enough free storage.
- On the target PC, install or open the Xbox app for Windows.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or has the relevant PC Game Pass access.
- Search for the game.
- Check the listing for PC availability. Xbox branding alone does not guarantee that the title has a Windows version.
- Select Install.
- Choose a storage drive or installation location if the app asks you to do so.
- Accept any prompt to install or update required Xbox or Microsoft Store components.
- Check the Xbox app’s download queue to confirm that the installation has started.
Keep the PC connected to power and the internet until the download finishes. Windows sleep or hibernation settings can interrupt a large installation, particularly when nobody is present to wake the computer.

Start the PC installation while you are away
The reliable remote workaround is to access the Windows computer itself. Microsoft documents remote-PC connection methods through Windows App and Remote Desktop workflows, although supported host configurations depend on the Windows edition, account type, network, and security settings.
Set it up before leaving
- Configure and test remote access while you are on the same network as the PC.
- Make sure the computer can remain powered on and connected to the internet.
- Check that the intended installation drive has enough free space.
- Confirm that you can sign in to both the remote-access service and the Xbox app.
- Use strong authentication and avoid exposing remote-desktop services unnecessarily to the public internet.
Start the download remotely
- From your phone, laptop, or another computer, connect to the Windows PC.
- Open the Xbox app on that PC.
- Sign in if necessary.
- Find the game and select Install.
- Choose the drive or folder if prompted.
- Verify that the title appears in the download queue.
- Disconnect from the remote session and allow the PC to continue downloading.
- Reconnect later to confirm that the installation completed.
This approach does not make the Xbox app remotely install a PC game. It simply lets you operate the PC from another location and perform the same installation you would perform while sitting in front of it.
Why your Xbox app may show only a console
Remote installation to an Xbox console and installation to a Windows PC are separate workflows. A console may appear as an eligible destination even when the Windows computer does not.

A game’s presence in your Xbox library also does not automatically mean that it can be installed on Windows. Some games support Xbox Play Anywhere or another cross-entitlement arrangement; others have separate console and PC licenses. Game Pass access can also differ between the console and PC catalogs. Store region, edition, publisher licensing, and age restrictions may affect availability.
Check the game’s listing for PC availability and confirm that you are using the account with the appropriate purchase or subscription. Do not treat an Install to console control as evidence that remote installation to a PC is supported.
Can the Xbox website install it to your PC?
Xbox and Microsoft Store web pages may offer installation controls for supported devices, particularly consoles. However, ownership of a game does not guarantee that a Windows PC will appear as a remotely installable target.

If the PC is absent from the device list, use the Xbox app locally or connect to the PC remotely. Avoid relying on old instructions that route through order history or an earlier Game Pass mobile-app interface; Microsoft changes these experiences, and the controls may not apply to PC targets.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
If your real goal is to play immediately, cloud gaming may avoid a local installation for supported titles. Availability depends on the game, subscription plan, region, device, browser or app, and current service support. Cloud gaming is not a way to install every Xbox game on Windows.

Xbox Remote Play
Xbox Remote Play streams a game that is already installed on your Xbox console. It does not download a PC version or install anything on the Windows computer. Since April 2025, Xbox has directed Remote Play through the web at xbox.com/remoteplay on supported browsers rather than relying on direct access through the Xbox mobile app. See Microsoft’s April 2025 announcement for the service change.

Troubleshooting
There is no Install button
- The title may be console-only.
- Your account may not have the PC entitlement.
- The game may be available through another storefront.
- The Xbox app may be signed into the wrong Microsoft account.
- The app or Microsoft Store services may need updates.
- The title may be unavailable in your region or subscription tier.
Sign out and back in with the account that owns the PC version or has the applicable PC catalog access. Then check the listing again.
The download starts and stops
Check whether the PC entered sleep or hibernation, lost its network connection, or lost access to the selected drive. Also check whether Windows needs a restart, the download queue is paused, Microsoft Store or Xbox services are stuck, or your account lacks permission to write to the destination.
For further recovery steps, use Xbox’s official guide to PC game installation problems.
Remote access cannot connect
The PC may be asleep, powered off, or unreachable. Remote access may not have been enabled, the Windows edition may not support the chosen host configuration, or a firewall, VPN, work-network policy, or security tool may be blocking the connection. The remote-access account may also differ from the Microsoft account used in the Xbox app.
Test the complete connection and installation process before relying on it while traveling. A computer that cannot be reached while you are at home will not become reachable once you leave.
Developer tools are not the answer
Xbox PC Remote Tools are Microsoft developer tools for deploying and managing software on remote Windows devices. They are not a consumer mechanism for remotely installing retail Xbox games. Do not use developer commands such as wdRemote or wdEndpoint as a substitute for the Xbox app.
