Activision acknowledged in October 2024 that a RICOCHET Anti-Cheat bug affected a small number of legitimate Call of Duty accounts. A hacker known as Vizor later told TechCrunch that the flaw had been abused to target “thousands upon thousands” of players. Activision said the issue was fixed and affected accounts were restored, but the hacker’s larger victim count has never been independently verified.
What happened?
The incident was not an ordinary Call of Duty ban wave. It concerned an alleged weakness in RICOCHET’s detection logic that could cause legitimate players to be flagged after receiving a malicious in-game private message.

In October 2024, Activision said a bug had affected a “small number of legitimate player accounts.” Contemporaneous reporting said the company fixed the problem and restored affected accounts. On November 7, 2024, TechCrunch published an interview with Vizor, a hacker involved in the Call of Duty cheating ecosystem, who claimed the flaw had been used against far more players.
The most accurate summary is therefore: a real RICOCHET issue appears to have enabled false bans, but the exact scale claimed by Vizor remains unverified.

What Vizor claimed
TechCrunch said it was introduced to Vizor by a cheat developer known as Zebleer. Zebleer reportedly claimed familiarity with the exploit and said they had seen Vizor use it. Vizor told the publication that RICOCHET was looking for hardcoded text strings associated with cheat software, including the phrase “Trigger Bot.”
According to Vizor’s account, sending one of those strings to another player through an in-game message could cause RICOCHET to treat the recipient as though the detection signature had been found in that player’s game environment. Vizor also claimed to have tested the technique on their own account and said they automated repeated targeting of other players.
Those details are important allegations, not an independently reproduced technical demonstration. Vizor was an interested participant in the cheating scene rather than a neutral security auditor, and the available reporting does not establish how many unique legitimate accounts were affected.

anti-cheat signature → matching phrase in a message → recipient allegedly flagged → account action
“Trigger bot” is a term for cheat software that automatically fires when an opponent enters a specified targeting condition. But the phrase itself is not proof that someone is using such software. It can appear in a discussion, a report, a joke, quoted text, or an attempt to provoke another player.
The alleged design error was not necessarily that RICOCHET could recognize a cheat-related phrase. It was that a text signature may have been treated as meaningful evidence without enough context to establish where the text came from and whether it represented software running on the player’s system.

What is confirmed, and what is not?
| Established or reported with attribution | Not established |
|---|---|
| Activision acknowledged a bug affecting a small number of legitimate accounts. | The exact number of victims. |
| The issue was reported fixed, and affected legitimate accounts were reportedly restored. | That every ban during the period came from this exploit. |
| TechCrunch reported an alleged message-based detection mechanism. | That the exploit affected every Call of Duty title, mode, platform, or region. |
| Vizor claimed the technique was used against “thousands upon thousands” of players. | That Vizor’s estimate represents unique, legitimate victims rather than attempts, duplicate accounts, or observed cases. |
| Some streamers reportedly said they were banned and later unbanned. | That every streamer ban at the time had the same cause. |
| RICOCHET uses multiple systems, including behavioral analysis and machine-learning-related detection. | That Activision’s entire anti-cheat system was compromised or that its kernel driver was hacked. |
How many players were actually affected?
There are three different numbers or descriptions in circulation:
- Activision’s account: a “small number of legitimate player accounts” were affected.
- Vizor’s claim: “thousands upon thousands” of players were banned.
- Secondary coverage: some reports repeated the hacker’s claim as “several thousand.”
No independently audited total is established by the available reporting. “Thousands” should therefore remain attributed to Vizor rather than presented as a confirmed incident count. Nor should it be combined with Activision’s much larger routine enforcement figures.
This was not the same as a normal ban wave
| Ordinary anti-cheat enforcement | Reported RICOCHET exploit |
|---|---|
| Targets accounts detected or suspected of using cheats. | Allegedly targeted legitimate accounts through another player’s message. |
| May rely on reports, behavior analysis, investigations, and technical signals. | According to the hacker, a matching text signature could trigger enforcement. |
| Intended to combine multiple indicators before action. | Allegedly over-relied on a weak or context-free signal. |
| Usually communicated as a routine enforcement campaign. | Prompted a bug fix and restoration of affected accounts. |
| Activision has announced large totals, including more than 80,000 accounts before Modern Warfare III launched and 12,000 confirmed cheating accounts stopped before entering a Black Ops 6 beta match. | No confirmed total was publicly established for this false-ban incident. |
Activision’s official October 2024 RICOCHET report and its November 2023 report describe broader anti-cheat enforcement. Those figures concern suspected or confirmed cheating and do not prove that those accounts were victims of the message-based issue.
Why a keyword could create a serious false positive
Anti-cheat systems need signals that are difficult for cheats to imitate and difficult for ordinary players to trigger accidentally. A phrase in a message fails that test if the system cannot reliably distinguish between:

- text received from another player;
- text displayed in chat or a private message;
- a string found in a game process or related software;
- software actually executing or interacting with the game; and
- an unrelated discussion about cheating.
This is a form of context collapse: information that may be useful in one location is treated as evidence in another. It also creates an adversarial path. A mechanism designed to remove cheaters can be turned into a weapon for removing legitimate players.
The incident does not show that RICOCHET was wholly ineffective. Activision describes RICOCHET as a layered system involving client-side and server-side technology, behavioral analysis, machine learning, and other mitigations. It suggests instead that one enforcement path may have trusted a weak signal too much.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.RICOCHET, kernel access, and the security trade-off
RICOCHET launched in 2021 and includes a kernel-level driver on PC. Kernel-level anti-cheat can give software broader visibility into activity on a machine, which may help identify sophisticated cheats. It also raises legitimate questions about privacy, trust, reliability, and the consequences of mistakes.
A false-ban bug in a detection layer is not evidence that the kernel driver itself was compromised, that Activision’s servers were taken over, or that player data was exfiltrated. The available reporting supports a vulnerable detection mechanism, not a full system breach.

The broader lesson is that greater technical visibility does not eliminate the need for careful validation. Automated enforcement should use multiple independent signals, distinguish evidence from ordinary player-controlled text, and provide a path for rapid reversal when an account is wrongly punished.
Did Activision fix the exploit?
Based on the reporting available for the incident, yes: Activision said the bug was fixed, and affected legitimate accounts were reportedly unbanned. Activision did not publicly provide a complete technical explanation of the underlying mechanism, and it did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment for the November 7 report.
There is no evidence in the reviewed sources that the 2024 message-based exploit remained active after the fix. Players should not treat old reports as a reason to test the technique. Anti-cheat systems change continuously, and attempting to reproduce an exploit can itself create account or security risks.

Later official RICOCHET updates describe expanded work on account security, device detection, and hardware-attestation-related protections. Those updates show that the system has evolved, but they are not a detailed retrospective explanation of the 2024 bug. See Activision’s April 2026 RICOCHET update for its later security measures.
What should a falsely banned player do?
- Check the account’s enforcement status through official Activision support channels.
- Use Activision’s official appeal or support process rather than contacting people who promise an immediate reversal.
- Preserve ban notices, screenshots, timestamps, match recordings, and relevant messages.
- Do not buy “unban” services, cheats, account-recovery tools, or unofficial support.
- Change the Activision password to a unique one and enable available two-factor authentication.
- Avoid reposting exploit strings, message formats, or automation instructions.
Support labels and appeal procedures can change, so players should follow the current workflow shown on Activision’s official support site rather than relying on an old video or social-media post. A ban being reversed is evidence of an apparent enforcement mistake, but it does not by itself prove that every restriction during the period had the same cause.
The bottom line
RICOCHET appears to have had a real flaw that could expose legitimate players to false enforcement. Activision acknowledged the problem, said it fixed it, and reportedly restored affected accounts. But the headline figure came from Vizor, a participant in the cheating ecosystem, and has not been independently verified.
The important security lesson is broader than the number: an anti-cheat system must not treat a simple text signature as conclusive evidence of cheating. Detection should be contextual and layered, and account punishment should be reversible when an automated system gets the answer wrong.
