Why Skype does not work on PS4
Microsoft retired its consumer Skype service on May 5, 2025, and directs users to Microsoft Teams Free. That means you should not expect to find Skype in the PlayStation Store or install a current PS4 version.

Older guides may tell you to download Skype through the PS4’s TV & Video section or open it in the PS4 browser. Those instructions are obsolete. Opening an old webpage or sign-in link does not provide supported Skype, Teams, audio, video, notifications, or microphone access on PS4.
This applies to consumer Skype. Do not confuse it with Skype for Business, the separate PlayStation Party Chat service, or the former Skype application for PS Vita.

Use PS4 Party Chat for PlayStation friends
For ordinary voice communication while gaming, PS4 Party Chat is the simplest replacement. It is not Skype and does not provide Skype’s former contact or telephone-calling features, but it lets you talk with people using the PlayStation ecosystem.
- From the PS4 home screen, press the Up button to open the function screen.
- Select Party.
- Select Start Party.
- Choose Open Party or Closed Party.
- Invite the people you want to talk with.
- Connect a compatible headset or headset-and-microphone combination.
Use a closed party when you want to control who can join. Hardware compatibility varies, so do not assume that every Bluetooth headset, USB microphone, or webcam will work with PS4.
Check PS4 microphone and chat audio
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Audio Devices.
- Check the input device and microphone level.
- Select Output to Headphones and choose the appropriate chat-audio setting.
If other people cannot hear you, check the headset’s mute switch, the microphone level, the connection to the controller or console, and each party member’s individual volume settings. If you can hear the game but not the party, check the output device and party-member volume.

Microsoft identifies Teams Free as the migration destination for consumer Skype users. Microsoft says former Skype users can sign in with their Skype credentials, and that contacts and chats may transfer subject to its migration rules.

Teams Free is not a native PS4 application. Install or open it on a supported phone, tablet, Windows PC, Mac, or supported web environment, then sign in with the former Skype account. Allow microphone and camera permissions before starting or joining a call.
Keep the call running on that separate device while you play on PS4. Microsoft’s migration and historical-data deadlines have changed over time, so check the current Microsoft support page rather than relying on an old Skype export date.
Use the PlayStation App on a phone
The official PlayStation App supports PlayStation voice chat and messaging. This can be useful if you want to communicate through your PlayStation account without using the PS4’s on-screen interface.

- Install the official PlayStation App on a supported phone.
- Sign in with the PlayStation account associated with your PS4.
- Open or join a PlayStation conversation or party.
- Use earbuds or a headset connected to the phone.
A phone’s speaker and microphone near the television can create echo. Headphones are preferable, and unused microphones in the room should be muted. If you need game audio and chat in one headset, a wired headset connected to the DualShock 4 may be more practical.

Can Discord work on PS4?
PS4 users can link PlayStation and Discord accounts to share PlayStation presence and gaming activity. That does not mean Discord voice calls run natively on PS4.
PlayStation’s documented console Discord voice workflows apply to PS5, so do not assume that linking Discord gives a PS4 the same voice-channel controls. For Discord communities, the practical PS4 setup is usually Discord on a phone or computer while the game runs on the console.
Can PS Remote Play help?
PS Remote Play streams the PS4 experience to a compatible phone, tablet, PC, or Mac. It may allow you to play through another device while using a communication app there, but it does not make Skype run on PS4.
- Turn on the PS4, or leave it in Rest Mode with Remote Play enabled.
- Launch PS Remote Play on the compatible device.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Select PS4 and connect.
- Use Teams, Discord, or another communication service separately if the device supports simultaneous use.
Remote Play requires a suitable network connection. Streaming a game and running a voice or video call simultaneously uses additional bandwidth, and audio routing varies by device and operating system. A phone may not reliably run Remote Play and a communication app at the same time.

Common problems and fixes
“Skype is not in the PlayStation Store”
That is expected. You are not missing a hidden download; current consumer Skype is retired and has no supported PS4 installation path.
“Teams works on my phone but not on PS4”
That is also expected. Teams Free is the replacement service for supported devices, not a PS4 application.
“My party can hear me, but I cannot hear them”
Check the headset connection, input and output devices, mute controls, party-member volume, and Settings > Devices > Audio Devices. Confirm the output-to-headphones selection is appropriate.
“Everyone hears an echo”
Use headphones instead of television speakers, mute extra microphones, and keep a phone or computer running the call away from the TV. Echo often occurs when the microphone picks up chat audio from speakers.

“I want video chat from my PS4 camera”
A PlayStation Camera does not restore Skype or make Teams available on PS4. Handle video calls on a phone, tablet, or computer.
“Remote Play keeps disconnecting”
Check the network connection on both the PS4 and Remote Play device, reduce competing downloads or video calls, and avoid treating Remote Play as a replacement for a native communications app.
The bottom line
There is no current way to Skype directly on PS4. Use PS4 Party Chat for PlayStation voice conversations. If you need former Skype contacts, use Teams Free on a separate supported device; for gaming communities, use Discord on a phone or computer. Do not pay for unofficial “Skype PS4” downloads or browser workarounds claiming to restore unsupported functionality.
