For gaming, the RTX 3060 Ti is the better graphics card when it costs only modestly more than an equivalent RTX 3060. It is substantially faster in rasterized games and ray tracing, making it the stronger choice for high-refresh 1080p and most 1440p gaming.
The RTX 3060 12GB is the smarter buy when it is substantially cheaper, your power supply or case is limited, or your games and applications benefit from more than 8GB of VRAM. Check the exact model carefully: desktop RTX 3060 cards exist with both 12GB and 8GB configurations.

Which card is faster?
The RTX 3060 Ti is clearly faster. It has about 36% more CUDA cores, a wider 256-bit memory interface, more RT and Tensor cores, and a higher power budget than the RTX 3060 12GB. Its memory bandwidth is also roughly 24% higher.
In Tom’s Hardware’s tested gaming suite, the RTX 3060 was approximately 20% slower than the RTX 3060 Ti. That figure is useful context, not a universal promise: the difference changes with the game engine, resolution, CPU, graphics settings, ray tracing, DLSS mode, drivers, Resizable BAR, factory overclock, and thermal limits. A practical expectation is that the 3060 Ti will be roughly one-fifth to one-third faster in many games, with a larger advantage when the workload is limited by GPU compute or ray tracing.
More VRAM does not reverse this result. The RTX 3060 12GB can avoid a memory-capacity problem in some games, but its GPU is still slower. Average FPS, 1% lows, texture-streaming behavior, and frame-time consistency are separate measurements.

1080p gaming
For ordinary 1080p gaming at 60Hz to 100Hz, the RTX 3060 12GB is often sufficient and can be the better value if it is meaningfully cheaper. It handles many modern games at sensible settings while leaving more VRAM headroom than the 3060 Ti.

- 7680 x 4320 Maximum Resolution
- PCIe 4.0
- Full Height, Dual Slot
- DisplayPort 1.4a, HDMI 2.1
The RTX 3060 Ti is the better choice for high-refresh 1080p, ultra settings, demanding AAA games, or ray tracing. In esports games, however, a CPU limitation can reduce the visible difference between the cards. If your processor cannot deliver the required frame rate, moving from a 3060 to a 3060 Ti will not fully solve the problem.
1440p gaming
The RTX 3060 Ti is generally the stronger 1440p card. Its additional shader throughput and bandwidth make it better suited to high settings and higher frame rates.
Its 8GB of VRAM is the important qualification. Newer or heavily modded games can exceed that capacity at high texture settings, particularly when ray tracing is enabled. The result may be texture-streaming problems, stutter, or less consistent frame times rather than simply lower average FPS.

At 1440p, either card may need DLSS, reduced ray-tracing settings, or a lower performance target in demanding games.

Ray tracing, DLSS, and newer features
Both cards use Ampere and include second-generation RT cores and third-generation Tensor cores. They support features including DLSS, NVIDIA Reflex, NVIDIA Broadcast, PCIe 4.0, and Resizable BAR, according to NVIDIA’s product information.
The RTX 3060 Ti is materially better for ray tracing because it has more RT hardware and greater overall GPU throughput. DLSS can improve performance on either card, but it does not erase the hardware gap. “DLSS” should not be read as a promise that these cards support every newer DLSS feature, especially frame generation; check the specific game’s implementation and the feature supported by the GPU generation.
Is 12GB of VRAM better than 8GB?
Only for workloads that actually need the additional capacity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- 12GB helps with: high-resolution textures, heavily modded games, some creator applications, and workloads that exceed 8GB at the selected settings.
- 8GB remains adequate for: many 1080p games and moderate 1440p gaming when texture settings are managed sensibly.
- What 12GB does not do: turn the RTX 3060 into a faster GPU than the RTX 3060 Ti.
When the 3060 Ti stays within its VRAM limit, it usually delivers better performance. When 8GB becomes a hard limit, the 3060 12GB may avoid stutter or texture compromises. That is a capacity advantage, not a raw rendering advantage, and “12GB” should not be treated as equivalent to a 3060 Ti.

Power, cooling, and compatibility
The RTX 3060 is the easier fit for a lower-wattage power supply, a compact case, or a system with limited airflow. Reference specifications put the RTX 3060 around 170W and the RTX 3060 Ti around 220W, though partner cards can differ. The 3060 Ti may also need more cooling and a larger case, depending on its design.
Before buying, check the exact card’s recommended PSU, PCIe power connectors, length, thickness, and clearance. Do not assume every RTX 3060 uses the same connector or that every 3060 Ti fits a small-form-factor system. Card-level efficiency, noise, and temperatures depend on the specific cooler and workload, not only the GPU name.
Creators, rendering, and local AI
The RTX 3060 Ti generally offers more raw GPU compute performance because it has more CUDA cores and greater throughput. The RTX 3060 12GB can nevertheless be preferable when an application is constrained by memory capacity rather than compute speed.
Application support varies widely. A 12GB card does not guarantee that a local AI model, renderer, or video project will fit, and it will not compensate for poor GPU optimization. For creator, rendering, and AI workloads, use benchmarks for the specific application and workload instead of extrapolating from gaming FPS.

Price and value in 2026
The cards launched at $399 for the RTX 3060 Ti and $329 for the RTX 3060, but those are historical reference points, not reliable 2026 purchase prices. Compare the actual delivered price, including tax and shipping, and separate new, refurbished, and used listings.
Use this rule of thumb:
- RTX 3060 Ti at a premium of roughly 20–25% or less: choose the 3060 Ti if condition, warranty, power, and fit are comparable.
- Both cards at nearly the same price: choose the 3060 Ti.
- RTX 3060 12GB substantially cheaper: choose it for budget 1080p gaming or a lower-power system.
- RTX 3060 8GB close in price to the 12GB model: prefer the 12GB model unless the 8GB card is meaningfully cheaper and your use is light 1080p gaming.
- Either Ampere card close to a newer-generation GPU: compare raster performance, ray tracing, upscaling and frame-generation features, VRAM, efficiency, driver support, warranty, and new-versus-used condition before deciding.
Because live 2026 prices and availability vary by country and seller, do not use a fixed dollar threshold without checking the current listing and its warranty.
Buying a used RTX 3060 or 3060 Ti
Condition can matter more than the nominal performance difference. A tested 3060 Ti with a return policy may be a better purchase than a damaged 3060, while a new 3060 with a full warranty can justify a premium over an uncertain used 3060 Ti.
