Identify your Nintendo DS model first
Nintendo DS can refer to four different systems: the original Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL. Nintendo lists separate manuals for each model, while its documented system-memory formatting instructions apply specifically to the DSi and DSi XL. Nintendo’s manuals index

- DSi or DSi XL: Follow the format steps below if you want to erase the system memory.
- Original DS or DS Lite: Do not use the DSi menu path. The cited Nintendo instructions do not establish an equivalent factory-format procedure for these models.
Format system memory on a DSi or DSi XL
Formatting is destructive: Nintendo says it deletes saved data stored on the system and returns system memory to the condition it was in when purchased new. - Turn on the DSi or DSi XL and open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Advance to page 4 of System Settings.
- Select Format System Memory.
- Read the warnings and select Format whenever prompted to confirm.
Do not confirm the format unless you are prepared to lose system-stored saves and added software.

If you have an original DS or DS Lite
Nintendo’s manuals index provides separate documentation for the original DS and DS Lite, but the cited format instructions name only DSi and DSi XL. That means the DSi procedure should not be treated as a universal Nintendo DS factory reset. Consult the manual for your exact model through Nintendo’s manuals index.
