To stop the EA app from running automatically on Windows 10 or Windows 11, turn off its startup option in the EA app, disable its entry in Windows Startup apps, and close any EA processes that are already active. Do not delete the EA background service: games and updates may depend on it.

Stop the EA app from starting with Windows

To stop the EA app from launching automatically on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, disable its startup setting in the EA app, then disable any EA entry in Windows Startup apps. If the app is already open, close it and end any remaining EA processes in Task Manager.

These are separate issues:

  • It opens when you sign in: disable automatic startup in the EA app and Windows.
  • It remains active after you close its window: exit the app and check Task Manager.
  • It repeatedly reopens or appears stuck: clear the EA app cache and investigate service or software conflicts.

1. Disable automatic startup in the EA app

  1. Open the EA app.
  2. Select the menu button.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Turn off Open the EA app automatically on startup.

The exact wording or location can differ between EA app builds. If you do not see that label, look in the Application settings for an equivalent option such as Launch at startup, Start with Windows, or Open at login.

This prevents a future automatic launch, but it does not necessarily close an EA app process that is already running. Continue with the Windows startup check and the process-closing steps below.

2. Disable EA in Windows Startup apps

Windows has its own startup control, independent of the preference inside the EA app. Check it even if you already changed the EA setting.

Windows 11 or Windows 10 Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Startup.
  4. Find EA app, EA Launcher, or another clearly EA-related entry.
  5. Switch the entry Off.

After you sign in to Windows again, the disabled entry should no longer launch the EA app automatically.

Alternative: use Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps. On some Windows versions this may be labelled Startup.
  3. Select the EA-related entry.
  4. Choose Disable.

You normally only need to disable the entry once; you do not need to end processes in Task Manager every time you start the computer.

What if EA is not listed?

If the EA app does not appear in Windows Startup apps, its startup behavior may be registered through another Windows mechanism, such as a Startup folder. Do not edit the Registry as a first-line fix: an incorrect Registry change can cause additional Windows or application problems. First confirm that the EA app’s own startup option is disabled, then look for other EA launch entries or use the troubleshooting steps below.

3. Close EA processes that are already running

Disabling startup affects the next Windows sign-in. To stop the current background activity:

  1. Exit the EA app normally from its menu or notification-area icon, if available.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  3. In Processes, look for EA-related processes.
  4. Select a process and choose End task only if the EA app has already been closed and the process is still present.

The main EA app executables you may see include:

  • EADesktop.exe
  • EALauncher.exe
  • EABackgroundService.exe

They are commonly installed under:

C:Program FilesElectronic ArtsEA DesktopEA Desktop

Your installation may use a different location if you selected another drive or folder.

Do not delete or permanently disable EA service files. EABackgroundService.exe and related components are part of the EA app’s operation. Removing, renaming, or permanently disabling them can prevent EA games from launching, updating, or being managed correctly. Ending a leftover process once is different from disabling the service itself.

After ending the processes, the EA app should no longer be active for the current Windows session. When you need to play an EA game, open the EA app manually; some games may require its background components while they launch or run.

Why Windows’ general background-app setting usually does not fix this

Windows also has a setting under Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [app] > Advanced options > Background app permissions. On supported apps, it may offer Never.

That control is not the main solution for the EA app. Windows distinguishes between Microsoft Store-style apps and traditional desktop applications. Desktop apps do not appear in the relevant general background-app list and are not controlled by that switch in the same way. The EA app is a Windows desktop application, so use:

  1. the EA app’s own automatic-start setting;
  2. Windows Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps; and
  3. Task Manager to close an instance that is already running.

If the EA app keeps reopening

If EA starts again after you have disabled both startup controls, the issue may not be ordinary startup behavior. It could be a service failure, a damaged cache, a game launcher invoking EA, or another application interfering with it.

Clear the EA app cache

Cache clearing does not disable startup, but it can correct problems that make the app appear stuck or repeatedly malfunction:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the EA app menu.
  2. Select Help.
  3. Choose App recovery.
  4. Select Clear cache.

If the EA app will not open, open Start, find the EA folder, select App Recovery, and choose Clear Cache.

EA identifies cache clearing as useful for issues such as offline mode that will not clear, failed updates, and downloads that remain stuck. It is not a substitute for disabling startup.

Restart before reinstalling

For an EA background-service error, fully close the app and reopen it. For an installation-related background-service failure, restart Windows. If the problem continues, reinstall the EA app using the installer from EA.com rather than deleting individual service files.

If another program is causing the conflict

Background applications can use memory and power and may contribute to connection problems, crashes, or game lag. If EA works after a clean Windows sign-in but fails when other software starts, investigate recently installed or resource-intensive programs, overlays, security software, and hardware-control utilities.

Where your security software provides application exceptions, EA’s relevant files may include:

  • EADesktop.exe
  • EALauncher.exe
  • EABackgroundService.exe

Only add an exception when you trust the installation and understand the security trade-off. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection just to test whether EA launches.

Use a clean boot only for diagnosis

A clean boot can reveal whether a non-Microsoft service or startup program is interfering with EA. It is not the normal way to stop the EA app from running in the background.

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Services tab.
  3. Check Hide all Microsoft services.
  4. Select Disable all, then apply the change.
  5. Open Task Manager from the Startup tab, or open Task Manager > Startup apps.
  6. Disable nonessential startup items and restart Windows.

Test EA after the restart. If the problem disappears, re-enable services and startup items in groups until you identify the conflict. A clean boot temporarily reduces functionality, so restore normal startup when testing is complete: open msconfig, choose Normal startup, apply the change, and restart.

Quick decision guide

What you see What to do
EA opens whenever you sign in Disable the EA app’s automatic-start option and the EA entry in Windows Startup apps.
EA’s window is closed but it still appears in Task Manager Exit EA, open Task Manager, and end the remaining EA process for that session.
EA reopens or displays a background-service error Restart the app or PC; if needed, clear the cache and reinstall the EA app rather than deleting service files.
A game or launcher starts EA again That game may require the EA app. Keep startup disabled, but open EA manually before launching the game.
EA conflicts with another program Close suspected background software, review security exceptions carefully, and use a clean boot as a temporary diagnostic.

What to expect after disabling EA startup

  • EA should not launch automatically when you sign in to Windows.
  • Disabling startup does not uninstall EA or remove your games.
  • You may need to open the EA app manually before launching an EA game.
  • Automatic updates, downloads, notifications, and background game-management features may not run until EA is opened.
  • The exact setting names can change between EA app builds, but the practical order remains: disable EA’s own startup option, disable Windows Startup entries, then close existing processes.

For most users, the first two sections are enough. Use cache recovery, service troubleshooting, security-software checks, or a clean boot only when EA continues to reopen or causes a separate background conflict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will disabling the EA app from startup stop my EA games from working?

No. Disabling the EA app’s startup entry does not uninstall it or remove your games. You can open EA manually whenever you need it. However, some games may require the EA app or its background components to launch, and automatic updates or notifications may not run until you reopen it.

Why does setting EA’s background permission to Never not stop it?

The general Windows background-app permission is mainly relevant to supported app types and does not control traditional desktop applications in the same way. For the EA desktop app, use its own startup setting, Windows Startup apps, and Task Manager.

Should I delete EABackgroundService.exe?

No. Ending a leftover process in Task Manager is a temporary way to close an app that did not exit cleanly. Deleting, renaming, or permanently disabling EABackgroundService.exe can interfere with launching, updating, or managing games.

The Bottom Line

The reliable fix is to disable startup in two places: EA app Settings > Application, then Windows Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps. Close leftover EA processes in Task Manager, but do not delete or permanently disable EA background-service files.
