Which game are you playing? The steps differ: some games let each player toggle PvP, while others require the host or server administrator to change the session settings. First identify the game and edition, then check whether you control your character’s setting or the multiplayer world.
Before changing a setting, identify who controls PvP
There is no universal multiplayer PvP-off switch. The available control may belong to an individual player, a server operator, or the creator of a game mode. Confirm the game, platform or edition, and whether the session is a hosted world, dedicated server, or creator-made mode. A setting for one of these contexts may not apply to another.
- Player toggle: changes your character’s PvP status; it may not prevent every other kind of damage.
- Host or server setting: changes how the shared world handles player damage and may require administrator or operator permissions.
- Mode or island setting: applies only to that particular created experience, not necessarily to the game’s other multiplayer modes.
Examples in specific games
Terraria: use the player PvP toggle
Terraria multiplayer is cooperative by default. A player can toggle PvP using the crossed-swords control in the multiplayer inventory interface. The community-maintained Official Terraria Wiki’s PvP instructions say that, on desktop and mobile, both players must have PvP enabled for player damage. Turning PvP off does not make a character immune to traps or environmental hazards. The multiplayer reference also describes multiplayer as cooperative by default.
Minecraft dedicated server: use the version-appropriate server control
For a dedicated server, you need operator access to run a command or change server configuration. A third-party hosting guide updated August 28, 2026, distinguishes Minecraft 1.21.9 and newer from 1.21.8 and older. It says the newer versions use the pvp game rule, set with gamerule pvp false, and that the rule is stored per world. For 1.21.8 and older, it directs administrators to set pvp=false in server.properties and restart the server. See the guide’s Minecraft PvP instructions; confirm the version-specific behavior against current official Minecraft documentation before applying it, particularly if the server has been updated.

V Rising: configure the server’s mode and damage settings
V Rising’s official server-settings document describes separate PvP and PvE server modes and includes player-damage settings. Its configuration fields include GameModeType, with PvP and PvE values, and PlayerDamageMode. The Stunlock Studios server-settings document dates from 2022, so use it to understand the server-controlled configuration model rather than as confirmation of current menus or exact steps.
Fortnite Creative: change the island, not Fortnite as a whole
Epic’s creator documentation describes island-level controls for player interactions, health, and damage. These settings are for Creative islands; they are not a general PvP-off control for all Fortnite multiplayer. Check the current Fortnite Creative island settings documentation for the island you are editing.

If you still cannot turn PvP off
- You cannot find a toggle: look for the game’s current help or server documentation, and check whether the control is available only to the host or mode creator.
- The setting is not taking effect: verify that you changed the correct world, server, or island and that your account has the required permissions. Some server configuration changes may need a restart.
- You still take damage: determine whether the damage is from another player or from the environment. Disabling PvP does not necessarily disable traps, hazards, or other multiplayer interactions.
For exact instructions, the key details are the game, platform or edition, version, session type, and whether you are the host or an administrator. Without those, a single command or menu path would risk applying the wrong game’s instructions.
