To turn on the Razer Cortex overlay, open Razer Cortex → Game Booster → In-Game, enable the FPS display or another available in-game feature, customize its position, size, and color, then launch a supported Windows PC game. Older Cortex versions may place the same controls under Launcher → In-Game.
Razer Cortex’s documented overlay is mainly an in-game FPS and performance display—not a general chat, browser, or launcher panel.

How to turn on the Razer Cortex FPS overlay
- Open Razer Cortex and leave it running.
- Select Game Booster.
- Open In-Game.
- Turn on the FPS counter or the in-game feature you want to use.
- Choose the overlay’s screen position, display size, and color.
- Launch a supported game and look for the FPS readout.
Razer says Game Booster can activate when a game is launched from the desktop or another client such as Steam; you do not have to start every game from the Cortex library. See Razer’s Game Booster documentation.
The exact controls can vary between Cortex builds. Razer’s current Cortex 10 FAQ documents the FPS overlay and its position, size, and color controls.

If your version says “Launcher → In-Game”
Use the page labeled In-Game. Older Cortex support material uses Launcher → In-Game, while newer documentation places it under Game Booster → In-Game. The different parent-menu name usually indicates a UI or version difference rather than a different feature.
How to customize or reset the overlay hotkey
Some Cortex versions provide a shortcut for showing or hiding the FPS display. Do not rely on a universal default hotkey, because bindings can vary by version and configuration.
- Open Cortex’s Settings.
- Select Hotkeys.
- Review the overlay binding and assign a shortcut that the game does not use.
- Reset the hotkeys if an old or unknown shortcut is triggering the display.
Razer’s Game Booster user guide describes FPS-display and hotkey controls. A Razer support response also directs users to Settings → Hotkeys when shortcut behavior causes problems.

An enabled switch does not guarantee that the overlay will render in every game. Work through these checks in order.

1. Confirm the basic settings
- Make sure the FPS or custom-display feature is still enabled.
- Check that the overlay is not positioned off-screen or set too small to see.
- Close and reopen Cortex, then restart the game.
- Launch Cortex before launching the game.
2. Test another game
If the overlay appears in one title but not another, the installation may be working correctly. The difference can result from the game’s launcher, rendering method, anti-cheat system, or a title-specific compatibility limitation.
3. Check the game and launcher setup
Razer’s FAQ says in-game features appear only with the official version of a game and lists cases where the game and its launcher need to be installed in the same folder. If the title uses a third-party launcher, try launching the official game executable with Cortex already open.
4. Temporarily disable other overlays
Several programs can compete for the same in-game rendering or keyboard shortcuts. Temporarily disable overlays from:
- Steam
- NVIDIA’s in-game overlay
- AMD Software
- Xbox Game Bar
- Discord
- MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner
- Screen-recording, monitoring, audio, or laptop-maker gaming utilities
Restart the game after changing overlay settings. Re-enable tools one at a time after identifying the conflict.

5. Consider game-specific restrictions
Razer support discussions have said that the Cortex FPS overlay may be disabled for games using anti-cheat software or certain Unreal Engine 4 implementations. Valorant has been cited in older support discussions. These are not a current, exhaustive compatibility list: restrictions can vary by game, engine, anti-cheat system, and software version.
6. Check whether Cortex is causing performance problems
If enabling the display introduces stutter, crashes, or an apparent FPS drop, turn off custom-display and FPS-related features and test again. You can also temporarily disable Auto-Boost. In Game Booster → Boost → Specials, Razer recommends considering the Enable CPU Core option during troubleshooting when other performance problems occur. Cortex does not overclock your CPU or GPU, according to Razer, but any additional background or overlay component can still conflict with a particular setup.
7. Submit logs if the problem persists
If the overlay fails across supported games after these checks, use Cortex’s feedback or support process and include the requested logs. Razer’s FAQ directs users to Cortex Feedback with logs for unresolved problems.
Why the overlay works in some games but not others
Cortex’s overlay is injected into or displayed over a running game, so compatibility is separate from whether Game Booster can optimize or recognize the title. A game may block third-party overlays, use an anti-cheat system that restricts them, launch through an unusual wrapper, or use a rendering configuration Cortex does not support in your installed build.

That is why testing a second game is useful. If the overlay works there, focus on the affected title’s launcher, anti-cheat behavior, other overlays, and current Cortex compatibility rather than immediately reinstalling Cortex.
How to turn the Razer Cortex overlay off
- Open Razer Cortex → Game Booster → In-Game.
- Disable the FPS, custom-display, or other in-game feature producing the overlay.
- Open Settings → Hotkeys and remove or change a shortcut that is activating it unexpectedly.
- Fully exit Cortex from the Windows system tray, then relaunch the game to test whether the display is gone.
If an on-screen display remains after Cortex is fully closed, it probably comes from another application. A Razer support discussion documented a case where Dolby Atmos for Gaming—not Cortex—was ultimately responsible for the overlay.
How to identify an unexplained overlay
- Exit Cortex completely from the system tray.
- Relaunch the game.
- If the display disappears, reopen Cortex and enable its in-game features one at a time.
- If it remains, inspect Steam, NVIDIA or AMD Software, Xbox Game Bar, Discord, monitoring tools, recording software, audio utilities, and OEM gaming software.
- Check the game’s own interface and accessibility settings.
FPS counters, GPU monitoring panels, audio indicators, and recording widgets can look similar, so the visual design alone is not proof that Cortex created it.
Does Razer Cortex have to launch the game?
No. Razer says Game Booster can work when the game starts from the desktop or another game client, including Steam. For troubleshooting, however, keeping Cortex open before launching the game can help determine whether it is detecting the title correctly. Game Booster activation and overlay compatibility are related but not identical.

What Windows versions does Cortex support?
Razer’s support page for Cortex 10 lists Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. That page listed Cortex version 2.0.0.598 and was updated May 8, 2026; this is the version information shown in that documentation, not a guarantee that every user currently has the same build.
Alternatives if Cortex will not work
If a particular game blocks or fails to display Cortex’s counter, consider the title’s built-in FPS counter first. Other options include the Steam overlay, NVIDIA or AMD driver overlays, Xbox Game Bar, and dedicated monitoring tools such as MSI Afterburner with RivaTuner.
These are alternatives, not guaranteed fixes. Running several overlays at once can increase rendering conflicts, shortcut collisions, or performance problems, so disable the ones you do not need.

Does Razer Cortex overclock my hardware?
No. Razer says Game Booster does not change hardware settings or overclock the CPU or GPU.
Do I need an internet connection?
