To uninstall one Steam game on Windows 11, open Steam, select Library, right-click the installed game, choose Manage > Uninstall, and confirm. This removes the game’s local files but does not remove your ownership, purchase history, or usual ability to reinstall it later.
Before uninstalling: check saves and important files
Uninstalling a Steam game does not handle saves identically for every title. If your progress matters:

- Open Steam while online and let any Steam Cloud synchronization finish.
- Check whether the game supports Steam Cloud in its Steam properties or Library information.
- Back up local saves manually if Cloud support is absent or uncertain.
Steam says third-party games may store saves in locations such as C:Users<Windows user name>DocumentsMy Games, but developers choose their own locations. Saves may also be in Saved Games, AppData, the game folder, or another location. Steam Cloud is not a guarantee of recovery if synchronization has not completed or the game does not support it. See Steam’s save-location and library guidance.
Mods, Workshop downloads, configuration files, shader caches, and launcher data can also be stored outside the main installation folder. Do not assume that uninstalling either preserves or deletes all related data.

How to uninstall one Steam game
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Library.
- Find the game you want to remove.
- Right-click the game and choose Manage > Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal.
Steam changes its menus and labels periodically. If the exact wording differs, look for the game’s Manage, Uninstall, or installation-management command.
Afterward, the game may remain visible in your Library. That means it is still associated with your account and available to download; it does not necessarily mean the local installation remains. Uninstalling is different from hiding a game or requesting that it be removed from your account.
Can Windows 11 Settings uninstall a Steam game?
Windows provides this standard removal path:
Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > More options (…) > Uninstall
Microsoft documents this route for installed applications, but individual Steam games do not always behave like conventional Windows programs. Use Steam first for games installed through Steam. Windows Settings is more appropriate for uninstalling the Steam client, removing a non-Steam game, or handling a valid uninstall entry when Steam is unavailable.
You can also use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, or press Win+R, enter appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. These are fallback methods rather than the preferred way to remove Steam-managed game files. See Microsoft’s Windows uninstall guidance.

Uninstall several games or check another drive
Steam’s current library-management area is under Steam > Settings > Storage. Select the relevant library drive to view installed games and use the available management controls to uninstall or move titles. This is particularly useful when games are spread across multiple drives or custom library folders.
The usual default locations are:
C:Program Files (x86)Steam
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon
These are only defaults. A library may be on another internal drive, an external drive, or a custom folder. Check every library in Settings > Storage before assuming a game is on C:.
If uninstall does nothing or the option is missing
- Exit the game.
- Quit Steam completely from the Windows system tray.
- Reopen Steam and try the uninstall again.
- Confirm that the drive containing the library is connected and has the same Windows drive letter.
- Check Steam > Settings > Storage for the library and game status.
- Restart Windows and retry if necessary.
If Steam’s installation is damaged, reinstalling Steam may repair the client. Steam documents repair or reinstallation as a fallback when the client cannot be removed normally. Do not edit the Windows Registry as a routine fix; Steam treats registry removal as a last-resort procedure requiring extreme care. See Steam’s Windows uninstall guidance.
Removing leftover game files manually
Use manual deletion only when Steam’s uninstall fails, the game no longer appears correctly in Steam, or an orphaned installation is clearly identified.
- Close Steam completely.
- Open the relevant Steam library folder.
- Confirm the exact game folder and its approximate size.
- Delete only that game’s folder, not the entire library.
- Reopen Steam and check the game’s installation status.
The main game folders are commonly under steamappscommon. Do not delete steamapps wholesale: it contains installation metadata and content for potentially many games. Manual deletion can leave Steam manifests, stale Windows entries, partial downloads, saves, mods, or configuration files behind. Steam may also try to redownload files when you next launch the title.

If a game is missing from Steam but its files remain, the library drive may be disconnected, its path may have changed, or installation metadata may be damaged. Reconnect the drive, restore its usual drive letter, and use Steam’s Storage controls to add or recognize the existing library. Steam explains this process in its library and external-drive troubleshooting guidance.
What happens to DLC, mods, and other launchers?
- Purchased DLC: Account ownership remains. Local DLC files are generally removed with the game or downloaded again when the game is reinstalled.
- Workshop items and mods: Some are stored in Steam Workshop directories; others modify the game folder or use a third-party mod manager. They may require separate cleanup.
- Settings and profiles: These can remain in Documents, Saved Games, AppData, or other user-data folders.
- Publisher launchers: Steam games may depend on EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, Epic, or another launcher. Remove a separate launcher independently only if you no longer need it.
- Shared components: Do not remove shared runtimes merely because they appear alongside a Steam game.
Free up more storage after uninstalling
Uninstall large games through Steam, check every Steam library drive, and empty the Windows Recycle Bin if you manually deleted files. Windows 11 also provides storage recommendations at Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Microsoft’s tool can identify temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Do not delete arbitrary files from steamapps while Steam is running.
Uninstalling Steam itself
Removing the Steam application is not the same as removing one game. Steam warns that uninstalling Steam can remove game content located inside its installation directory. If you plan to reinstall Steam and keep existing downloads, move or back up the steamapps folder before uninstalling, then add the existing library again through Steam’s Storage settings after reinstalling.
Separate libraries may be outside the Steam installation directory, but do not assume they are safe without checking their locations. If Steam was already uninstalled, look for surviving library folders before deleting anything. Reinstall Steam, add the existing library location, and let Steam rediscover the files where possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why uninstalling from Steam is safest
For a Steam-installed game, Steam is the authoritative manager of the game’s files, library location, and installation status. Windows Settings can remove some entries, and manual deletion can reclaim space in an emergency, but both approaches can leave stale metadata or unrelated files. The normal choice is therefore simple: use Steam’s Library uninstall command for the game, and reserve Windows removal tools for the Steam client, non-Steam software, or troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does uninstalling a Steam game delete my purchase?
No. It removes the local installation. The game normally remains attached to your Steam account and can be downloaded again.
Can I uninstall a game without uninstalling Steam?
Yes. Uninstall the individual title from Steam’s Library; leave the Steam application installed.
Why does Windows still list a game after I removed it?
Windows can retain a stale uninstall entry when registration was incomplete. If the game files are gone, this is usually a listing problem rather than remaining storage. Microsoft recommends trying another uninstall location or its Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter for blocked desktop-program removals.
What if I deleted the game folder manually?
Reopen Steam and check the title’s installation status. If it still appears installed, use Steam’s uninstall or installation-management command to refresh its state. Manual deletion may leave metadata, saves, mods, or configuration files behind.
