Only the account owner can change its visibility. If the information is set to Friends Only, the appropriate way to see it is to become the owner’s Steam friend; otherwise, ask whether they are willing to make the specific profile information public.
What Steam privacy settings let you see
Steam offers Public, Friends Only, and Private visibility, with additional settings for individual profile components. That means one part of a profile may be visible while another is hidden. Steam provides no documented viewer-side control to unlock information the owner has restricted. See Steam’s profile privacy guidance.
- Public: The owner has made the relevant information visible to everyone.
- Friends Only: The relevant information is limited to the owner’s Steam friends.
- Private: The owner has restricted the relevant information to themselves.
Steam says unfriending someone prevents that person from viewing content set to Private or Friends Only. Details are in Steam’s guidance on abuse, harassment, and misconduct.
How to change your own profile privacy
- Open your Steam profile.
- Select Edit Profile.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Choose the visibility you want for the profile and its available components. Steam says changes save automatically.

Why a game or wishlist may have different visibility
Private Games
Steam’s Mark Private feature applies to an individual game, not the profile as a whole. It hides that game’s ownership, playtime, status, and activity from other users. Steam documents two multiplayer exceptions: a player’s Steam ID is visible to others on the same matchmaking server, and an invited friend may see the player’s in-game status until the player exits or disconnects. Wishlists
Wishlist visibility follows the Community Profile account settings, and a wishlist can be visible to everyone, friends, or only the account holder. Check the wishlist’s own visibility rather than assuming it matches every other profile detail. Steam explains this in its wishlist support page.

If someone else’s profile is private
- Use only information the owner has chosen to share.
- For details set to Friends Only, send a friend request and wait for the owner to accept it.
- If a particular detail remains hidden, ask the owner whether they want to change that component’s visibility.
