How to Raise the Player Level Cap in ARK

Raising ARK’s player level cap requires changing the level progression and player XP ceiling in the active Game.ini—not just increasing XP gain.

You can raise the maximum player level in an ARK session or server you control by editing its Game.ini configuration. The key settings are LevelExperienceRampOverrides, which defines the level progression and XP requirements, and OverrideMaxExperiencePointsPlayer, which sets the player XP ceiling. This creates a higher configured cap; the available guidance does not establish a way to remove every limit or make levels truly unlimited.

What “remove the level cap” means in ARK

ARK separates three things that are easy to confuse: how quickly XP is earned, how much XP a player can hold, and how many levels the progression ramp makes available. Increasing an XP gain rate alone does not raise the maximum level. A custom cap requires the progression ramp and XP ceiling to be configured consistently.

The configuration guidance applies to ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK: Survival Evolved servers, as well as single-player and non-dedicated sessions. The file location and editing method vary by platform and hosting setup, so there is no single file path or UI route that applies universally. See the ARK Official Community Wiki’s server configuration guide and confirm the instructions for your game version and setup.

Which settings control player levels?

LevelExperienceRampOverrides: the level progression

This setting describes the levels available and the XP requirements for them. Its entries should be sequential and cover each configured level. The configuration guide notes that extra internal levels are used for ascension and other rewards, so do not assume every entry corresponds directly to an ordinary player level. For a custom cap, the progression needs to include the levels you intend to make available.

ARK: Survival Evolved (PS4)
  • Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
  • Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
  • Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
  • Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts

OverrideMaxExperiencePointsPlayer: the player XP ceiling

This setting overrides the maximum XP a player can hold. Coordinate it with the progression ramp: a higher XP ceiling by itself does not define the levels and XP requirements, and a longer ramp is not useful if the XP ceiling prevents players from reaching it. The cited guidance does not specify one universal value for an “unlimited” setup.

How to raise the cap in a session or server you control

  1. Identify your setup. Confirm whether you are changing Survival Ascended or Survival Evolved, and whether the configuration belongs to single-player, a non-dedicated session, or a server. Find the active Game.ini for that setup; its location and editing route depend on the platform or host.
  2. Back up the current configuration and save. Keep a copy so you can restore the previous settings if the edited configuration causes problems.
  3. Edit the player progression. Set up LevelExperienceRampOverrides with sequential entries for the levels and XP requirements you want, and set OverrideMaxExperiencePointsPlayer to a ceiling that supports that progression.
  4. Check which progression you are changing. The level-ramp directive may be used twice: once for player levels and once for tame levels. If your goal is only to change player levels, avoid unintentionally changing creature progression.
  5. Apply the configuration. Save the file and restart or reload the session or server as appropriate. Verify that you edited the active configuration and check the result in the target game version.

These are configuration principles, not a tested, platform-specific recipe. The available guidance does not supply a complete example ramp or verify exact file paths for particular consoles, hosts, or game builds. For version-specific syntax and details, consult the configuration guide before editing.

What is the standard level cap in Survival Ascended?

The ARK Official Community Wiki lists a maximum player level of 245 in ARK: Survival Ascended as of August 28, 2026. It attributes additional levels to ordinary progression, alpha boss defeats, explorer-note completion, chibi progression, and DLC explorer-note collections. That is the reported standard progression maximum, not a guarantee that every unofficial server or custom configuration uses the same cap. The wiki’s leveling page covers the reported progression.

Why a “Level Cap” mod may not raise your maximum

The CurseForge project Level Cap – Ark Survival Ascended Mods describes a console command and GameUserSettings.ini options for controlling the maximum player level. Its description says it only lowers the built-in cap; it does not increase it. It therefore does not solve the problem of progressing beyond the default ceiling. The listing reports an update on July 22, 2026; check its current compatibility with your game version before installing it.

If you are stuck at the cap

  • XP rises, but your level does not: Check whether the progression ramp contains higher player levels and whether the player XP ceiling supports them.
  • You changed a setting but nothing changed: Confirm that you edited the active Game.ini for the correct session or server, then restart or reload as appropriate.
  • Creature levels changed instead: Review which use of LevelExperienceRampOverrides you edited; player and tame progression can be configured separately.
  • You do not control the configuration: A server owner or administrator must make the change. Changing your XP gain rate or installing a mod that only lowers the cap will not give you control over the server’s player-level ceiling.
