Start with the controls: Rocket Start and drift boosts
Get a Rocket Start
Press and hold A with the right timing during the starting countdown. The timing matters: pressing too early or too late will not give the intended launch.

Drift into a Mini-Turbo
- Hold A to accelerate.
- While steering with the Control Pad, press R to begin a drift.
- Alternate left and right on the Control Pad while drifting until sparks appear.
- Release R to end the drift and trigger the brief Mini-Turbo.
Nintendo’s Mario Kart DS instruction manual explains that drifting lets you take corners without losing speed, and says: “Release the R Button to cancel the drift and get a Mini-Turbo boost that will let you dash for a short time.” Mushrooms also provide brief speed bursts, according to the manual.

Snaking is the repeated use of alternating drifts and Mini-Turbos, often across a straight rather than only at a corner. You drift one way, switch direction to build a Mini-Turbo, release for the burst, and begin the next drift. A Speedrun.com community guide describes this technique and names Egg 1, Dry Bomber, and ROB-BLS as karts with handling suited to it; those are suggestions for this technique, not universal best karts. The useful practice goal is consistency: build sparks reliably, release at the right moment, and avoid steering into obstacles or losing your line. Snaking is an advanced technique, not a separate speed setting or a guaranteed shortcut to a good result.
Pick a kart for the course and your strategy
Do not choose only by the top-speed stat. Kart choice can involve a trade-off among top speed, handling, Mini-Turbo length, and mushroom availability, and the right balance depends on the course and approach. The MKDS Players’ Page recommends Dry Bomber and Egg 1 as beginner-friendly choices for learning the game’s physics, while noting that faster karts can become manageable with experience. PRB and shortcuts are a different category of play
PRB means Prolonged Rocket Boost. The MKDS Players’ Page describes it as a glitch: after a strong Rocket Start, continuously chaining Mini-Turbos without losing top speed can preserve that speed over terrain, making off-road routes possible on some tracks. The page maintains separate PRB and non-PRB charts because they represent different styles. Read the community FAQ on PRB.

Before comparing a leaderboard time with ordinary racing, check whether the category allows PRB or shortcuts; a glitch-assisted route is not a like-for-like comparison with a run that follows the usual course.

A Speedrun.com tutorial listing includes Rocket Boost, Double Hop, Mono-Mini-Turbo, Respawn Boost, Fast Falling, PRB Reset, PRB Double Hop, Spin Landing, and Neutral Hop/Drift/Mini-Turbo alongside the basic techniques. A practical way to improve
- Practice the Rocket Start until you can trigger it consistently.
- On a familiar course, focus on completing a drift and releasing a Mini-Turbo cleanly.
- Once that feels reliable, practice alternating drifts on straights to chain boosts.
- Try a handling-focused kart while learning; compare other options only after you can keep a steady line.
- When studying record runs, check their category and whether they use PRB or shortcuts before adopting their routes as ordinary-race advice.
