Unlock them with Reward Shards; once unlocked, multiple relics track at once, and you can see accumulated milestones during play and match-by-match progress afterward.
What Hero Relics track
Each relic records a particular statistic or battleground achievement for its hero. Progress accumulates as you play that hero, so relics are counters rather than combat upgrades. Valve groups them under Dota Plus Hero Progression on its Dota Plus page.
How many relics each hero has
Valve’s current Dota Plus feature page, accessed in 2026, lists 14 relic slots for each hero: 10 Common and 4 Rare.

How to unlock and track relics
Unlock Hero Relics for a hero by spending Reward Shards. Valve’s current feature description confirms Shard unlocking but does not state a current price for either rarity, so older prices should not be treated as current.

After unlocking relics, you do not have to select one active tracker: multiple unlocked relics track simultaneously. Their milestones accumulate as you play, and the post-game screen shows a breakdown of progress made in that match. Valve’s current description does not specify a particular menu path for opening the breakdown.
What Common and Rare meant in the 2021 update
Valve’s Dota Plus Update – Spring 2021, published March 1, 2021, specified different Hero XP rewards for relic level-ups and random-purchase prices at that time:

The 2021 update also said random purchases would not produce duplicate relics. These are dated rules from that announcement, not current settings verified by Valve’s present feature page.
Do relics work in Turbo?
Valve’s March 2021 update said relic progress in Turbo matches advanced at half the rate of normal Dota matches. The current Dota Plus feature page does not restate that multiplier, so treat it as the rule Valve announced in 2021 rather than a newly confirmed setting.

What relics do—and do not do
Relics provide a record of hero-specific achievements and statistics, plus Dota Plus progression through relic level-ups as described in Valve’s 2021 update. Valve’s current description presents them as trackers; it does not describe them as granting combat stats or gameplay power.
