In MineColonies, the building players often call a restaurant is officially named the Dining Hall. It is where hungry citizens go to receive food. Its Cook/Waiter prepares and distributes basic foods when the required ingredients and fuel are available; more involved dishes are made through the Chef’s Kitchen (called the Cookery in some materials), while the Bakery adds baked goods. Exact names, recipes, and menus can differ by version, so use the Wiki version that matches your modpack.
What the Restaurant (Dining Hall) does
The Dining Hall is the citizen-facing part of the colony’s food system: citizens with low saturation seek it out, and its worker gives them food. It is not the only place where food is produced. The Dining Hall worker can cook basic foods using a furnace-style process, provided the building has the necessary ingredients and fuel. The official Dining Hall documentation describes this role.
Think of the Dining Hall as both a basic kitchen and a serving point—not as a universal recipe station. Having food somewhere in the colony does not guarantee that the Dining Hall worker can make every meal.
How food gets from ingredients to citizens
- Obtain ingredients. Early colonies can use a Fisher’s Hut for food; the Getting Started guide also points to a Farmer’s Hut or an animal herder as supply options. See the Getting Started guide.
- Prepare recipes in the right building. The Dining Hall worker handles basic cooking. Advanced dishes are prepared through the Chef’s Kitchen, also referred to as the Cookery in some materials, and the Bakery contributes baked goods. The Food guide outlines these roles.
- Provide ingredients and fuel. For foods cooked by the Dining Hall worker, both are needed. Check the building’s available supplies rather than assuming that ingredients stored elsewhere are accessible to the worker.
- Choose foods in the Dining Hall interface. The food tab lists items the worker may produce or hand out. You can toggle items on or off. An item that is disabled may still be eaten if a citizen finds it; disabling it means the worker will not produce or hand it out. Defaults and reset behavior can vary or be unclear across versions, so inspect the interface in your installation.
- Citizens seek food when hungry. Saturation drops through work and sleep. When it gets low, citizens look for food at the Dining Hall.
Dining Hall, Chef’s Kitchen, and Bakery compared
| Building | Main role | Food handled | Citizen service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dining Hall (often called the Restaurant) | Basic cooking and serving | Basic foods that can be cooked in a furnace-style process, subject to ingredients and fuel | Yes; hungry citizens come here to receive food |
| Chef’s Kitchen (also called the Cookery in some materials) | Food preparation | More advanced dishes | Not the citizen-facing serving role described for the Dining Hall |
| Bakery | Supplementary food production | Baked goods | Not identified as the main place citizens go to be fed |
These divisions are documented in the MineColonies Food guide and Dining Hall page; exact recipes and worker labels depend on the version.

Food quality and the Dining Hall list
MineColonies food uses quality tiers. The documentation describes gold-, silver-, and bronze-background foods, while vanilla foods carry a nutrition penalty; the Dining Hall page also says non-MineColonies foods with a white background provide worse nutrition and happiness. The precise items available depend on the mod version and what your colony can supply. Do not assume that every food item is equally beneficial simply because it can be eaten.

Check the likely causes in this order, using the Wiki version corresponding to your installed MineColonies and modpack:
- No Dining Hall: Citizens need a Dining Hall for the normal food-service loop. Without one, the official guide says they may request one, or you may need to feed them manually.
- No worker or supplies: Confirm the Dining Hall is staffed and that the worker has the ingredients and fuel for the selected cooked food.
- The item is switched off: Review the food tab and make sure the worker is allowed to produce or hand out that item.
- The recipe belongs elsewhere: Check whether the dish needs the Chef’s Kitchen/Cookery or Bakery rather than the Dining Hall.
- Version mismatch: Compare menus, recipes, and worker names against the documentation version matching your installation; modpacks can bundle different versions.
The official pages explain these mechanics but do not establish a universal meal rate or staffing ratio, so there is no fixed number of citizens one Dining Hall is guaranteed to feed.
